It really depends, my Aloy fandragon is G1 just to match with the canon stuff in game, but it doesn’t really matter with other characters.

Breeding project where both parents are named "unknown". Also very stingy so breeding genes as well as colours.
step 1: scry and dress (if can't dress, project gets canned right here)
step 2: auction house and search function for exact colours.
step 3: widen search results slightly. sometimes i find a dragon that's good right here so i buy and gene and done.
step 4: widen search slightly further. stalk saved searches. buy parents, do a breeding project.
step 5: experience anxiety whenever i pm someone asking about a dragon lmao
step 6: poverty
there are like two dragons that i couldn't settle on a scry for so i threw some parameters into the ah and got lucky with some colours i never would've expected. (it's this one and that one, if you're interested).
i don't do g1s for several reasons: 1) my lair is majority g1s and i wanted fandragons to be distinct; 2) g1s expensive yo and you gotta wait for them to even exist? nty; 3) i can name the parents things that are lore appropriate, accurate or just plain funny

Breeding projects are so annoying but when they're done they're SO satisfying. That's when you show off the dragon on dragon share as many times as you can to the point it's a little annoying.
Breeding projects, because I'm way too darn picky about colours and eyes and gen ones are expensive. I tend to stick to treasure genes unless I can find breeding partners that have them as well, even if gem genes are more accurate to the character I'm aiming for.

I only do G1s, don't do anything G1+ so it's all about whether those colours get rolled or not. I stalk the bookmarked Search for months on end, sometimes even years and hope I'll find a dragon who could resemble one of the people I'm trying to insert into my lore (yes, I am shameless)

Exactly this [s]except i have a few fodder breeding pairs shhhhh[/s]
but yeah. i have so many saved searches named something along the lines of "____ g1 please" or "gimme _____ g1" and so many outfits saved that are eventually not even gonna look good on the finished projects.
I have had a few where I had some very specific ideas for what I wanted, and ended up looking for this fella for just under a year (and he's perfect, the success i had in finding him increased my love for the character tenfold) and this one who i looked for for about 5-6 months i think? and he's a little off but gorgeous anyway.
Just recently, I accidentally snagged some g1s while buying up fodder, and I got this absolute GEM who i love very much and this very ugly but absolutely perfect little man.
Anyway. Set very low expectations for g1 fandragons and get VERY EXCITED when they do turn out nicely.

generally I scry and dress, then do a sitewide search to find out if the color combo even exists. if it doesn't I cry. if there's only a handful of them I also cry. there was ONE fandragon I decided to do a breeding project for (technically two but they were a joint project) and it took nine months with plentiful breeds and it was agonizing. not doing that again
that said, I'm a gen1 lair now, and I don't rly hunt fandragons like I used to. I do have one gen1 fandragon, so I let him stay as a lore dragon, but that was really just coincidence because I think he was about the only dragon I could find with the perfect colors.

It depends on who I’m making a fan dragon for! If it’s for a character I really like and want something specific for scry something that fits and an outfit. This requires a breeding project but I’m fine with it if it’s for a character I really like. Usually I don’t bother with that whole process and instead look for a dragon that kinda resembles the character and then just buy em off the AH

when I first started out, I usually just searched for dragons off the ah that I could make fandragons out of (and still do that). only recently have I started planning a breeding project for my milkfish fandragon (milkfish is the side project of my favorite producer of all time, underscores) and it's going to prove extremely challenging. sometimes I'm quite tempted to just offer for a g1 that already has those colors and breedchange but yea
I like making accents and skins for my fandragons & selling them to the public :D I get paid well for my hyperfixations sfjkhskjh

Most of the time they're breeding projects because I get picky with accuracy. G1s can be pretty pricy for the certain color combos I look for, especially doubles.
For one of them, colors didn't matter because he was getting a Marva cloak anyway, so I snatched the cheapest one I found for treasure. Sometimes the right colors can be found on the AH. All kinda depends on the project I think
