a kingdomlocke
synopsis here.

Hi, friends! It's yah girl, Jay, back again with another brand new kingdomlocke that's basically a reset for my clan - without, yknow, touching my oldest dragons that are PRECIOUS and i will not risk anything terrible happening to them [emoji=fae scared size=1]
I will not be committing to any sort of schedule, but am hoping to stick to this fairly regularly, and if you like spoilers, I'll often do two pulls at a time bc i'm awful like that- so look ahead for small spoilers for what's coming up next.
This is mostly a test-run, both to make sure the new version of the kingdomlocke 3 is cohesive and runs correctly; and to remind myself that yes, I can still write a good story.....

The beginning is never easy, is it? For if it was, would it be worth it? You have to fight, you have to try, to earn who it is you're becoming. And so it was in the First Fissure kingdom, the overarching weight of who they were and what they wanted to achieve was an esoteric thorn in their proverbial side, every moment of every long, long day.
A stern and forthright aberration named Quill came into her own, and in finding her place, she put on a crown of charred bones and called herself Monarch. This was to be her kingdom they were building, not in her name but in her visage- it would be a trial to exist here in the long-forgotten underground tombs beneath the borders between the Shifting Expanse and the Sunbeam Ruins.
Jealousy and longing run amok in equal portions, and there's so much emotion brimming below the surface of those who choose to call this new kingdom their home.
Quill was matter-of-fact when another aberration petitioned her, that there was no love between them, but they would do their duty and lay together, producing a clutch of eggs whose fortunes were yet to be told. But were they ever important... oh, yes. Perhaps the most important clutch of eggs ever laid.
Fate itself rested on them.
[emoji=crescent moon 2 size=1] OOC: Quill & Vagabond have a nest of 3 eggs.
Vagabond & Auldcastle level up to 2.
Quill was a character in a previous kingdomlocke, so she is already levelled to 5. I'll hold off on adding her to group trials unless it specifically says the Royal participates, until someone else hits lvl 5, then she will properly be added the game.

The ache in January's stomach had become the norm, and hunger was a state of being for the kingdom as of late; weakness and malaise infected the small group, but in a defiant twist of fate, the new dark leader of this newborn kingdom had hidden away in private a nest with his beloved, a demon imperial dragoness named Sleepless who stole the magic of dreams from those around her.
One morning filled with the fog and mist of promise, a pearlcatcher wandered into the grounds of the new kingdom, and was so accosted and brought before the Dark Lord and his consort, where he fell to the ground, his forehead touching the cool tiled floor, and groveled to be allowed to stay, and he would sign his life away to protect them both, and any progeny they may have, and their progeny, and their lifesblood in its entirety, for as long as they would have him. This seemed to please January, and he gave leave for Chara to rise and take his place by their side.
Would they tell him they were starving? No. That was something he would learn on his own, to his misfortune. Who had he sworn his life to?
Chara was the only survivor of a forgotten kingdom that had known no peace, and imploded within itself not long after it was formed. The child of the former ruler, he carried with him all the remained of what was, and his pearl he kept tucked and protected even more than most of his kind, for it held untold stories of what his former kingdom could have been, and the promises that whispered for only his ears.

There was nothing Vagabond wouldn't do for his lady love. His Quill. And she loved him back. They were inseparable, inseverable, every fibre of his being sang whenever he was in her presence. He couldn't breathe if he couldn't see his lady love; he could scarce form a thought or a sentence or even a single word without her blessing.
Adoration had been just a shadow of the word before Vagabond fell for his Queen, and he would do anything she asked of him. Anything at all, no matter how vile or wretched or beautiful.
And what she asked for was madness.
In her looks and her glances and her short sentences she cast his way, he heard what her heart was truly saying. Honour me, worship me, adore me, her soul sang to his, and he did listen, for who was he to deny his Queen her every desire- before she even knew what she wanted, he would provide for her- and their children. They would want for nothing, and he would be there to protect them and honour them and give them everything in his power.
She asked him for devotion when she blinked twice in his direction, and to Vagabond that meant she wanted him and no one else but their own blood in her kingdom. They would be a family, and they would protect each other and be together. Forever.
Nothing could take his Queen from him, and nothing could get in the way of what she wanted. What he knew in his heart she really wanted.
Quill wanted to see herself in her kingdom; and she would. Vagabond would make sure of it. He would never fail her. She deserved perfection, nothing else.
Auldcastle, for all his unsuspecting worth, could not believe where he woke up. Locked away in a forgotten cavern,
Alone, and afraid.
Forgotten.
[emoji=crescent moon 1 size=1] Auldcastle fainted first, and I was quite disappointed as I think he's SO pretty; but then I got the idea for ...a bit of obsession to plague Vagabond, and I feel better now about losing Auldcastle for the cause.

January would never admit it was his dark magic that was slowly killing them; sucking the life out of the very land around them, poisoning it, so there was no food to be found- no foliage that didn't rot in their mouths, no game that wasn't undead and lumbering through the Shifting Expanse with a gruesome lurch.
Tempers were flaring with the others, and for all her wicked sorcery, Sleepless could not change fate. She was drained after laying her clutch and birthing the horror that embued the crackling eggs, and so when the simple aether Grisby came upon her, so wild with hunger that he wanted to steal the eggs for himself, oh how they fought.
A mother's rage is a terrible thing, and she will move heaven and earth to protect her children. This mother had that very ability, and heaven's wrath rained down on the starving kingdom, shards of ice pelting and slicing and stabbing anything in their path as they fell from the open sky --
there was no where to hide, as their kingdom was torn asunder and ripped to shreds, and Sleepless gave her life to protect her children who would usher in a new age; her last thoughts were with the knowledge that their would-be assassin died with her, and a sick smile spread over the imperial's serpentine thin lips at the sight of his shattered corpse laying in the open, where no one would mourn him.
[emoji=deer skull size=1]
As Sleepless drew her last breath, the skies cleared and when January returned with naught but ashes in his mouth for his trouble, his heart swelled and truly broke at the loss of his mate.
He ignited what remained of the kingdom with dark magic flames touched by something unholy indeed, and stole his mate's eggs away. He took flight, and would never look back at this epic catastrophe.

Times were hard, and there was just the two of them, tending to their nest. Or rather, Quill put Vagabond on nursing duty, and she went out- hunting, foraging, scavenging, exploring, looking for dragons to bring into her kingdom. It was so peculiar how Auldcastle just... disappeared, but who was she to question fate. Terrible things happened to good dragons all the time.
She had so many things on her mind, so much to juggle; maintaining a fledgling kingdom was so much more than she could have ever imagined, but why would she imagine this. She had always dreamed of being on top, finding herself the object of worship and desire, and Quill understood that the method to get here would make itself known as she went. It wasn't something she gave much thought to.
She had other, more clinical things to think about. The machinations of "love" weren't one of them. She needed heirs. Vagabond was available. 1+1=2, or 5, in their case, as there were three eggs that came from their coupling. It was purely clinical, there was no emotion there, no drive and no feelings. This was to secure her throne, and that was it.
Quill would carve out her legacy, one stone at a time if she had to. And her children were the key to that, they would ensure that she would live on... In whatever manner that happened to take when the time came.
Her heir, the oldest survivor of her clutch, would be her vessel. That child would be her portal back to this realm when she eventually expired, whether that was next week or in a century from now. What happened to the spirit of her child wasn't her concern.
Quill aspired to live forever, and if that meant hopping from one unsuspecting host to another to achieve it, then so be it.
If the first child fell, well... there were two more.
And when she was recovered, she would lay more nests, either with Vagabond provided he continued to be useful, or another aberration male.
She wasn't too particular about the details, to be frank.

It took days and nights of endless searching and Chara barely slept, he had to find January, had to find his Lord, had to find his purpose.
He walked, and he flew, in search of his Lord- searching the Shifting Expanse that seemed to go on forever. A desolate kingdom, a treacherous land, with summer storms threatening the sky, looming dark clouds crackling with never-ending lightning storms snaking from cloud to cloud, often appearing too close for comfort. The ozone was thick and the threat of a massive thunderstorm made the going uneasy, but Chara could not be put off his course.
Though he had no map, he let his heart guide him. He had sworn he would protect Lord January and his mate and his family, and he had failed. Sleepless had fallen, and the eggs were gone, his Lord was gone, his sense of self was gone. Clutching his pearl close to his form, it whispered heathen secrets that he dared not speak aloud to anyone- and for truly there was no one hear to listen if he were to want to share them. No, they were secrets just for his ears to know, alone.
Days and nights passed, and finally the pearlcatcher found trace of the bogsneak king, curled up in the dried sinew roots of a long dead tree, curled around his clutch of three eggs, who's magic was untold. Their mother had given her life to bring them into the world and guard them, and Chara would do the same.
"My life for you," his whispered to his heartbroken Lord, and nuzzled January gently before taking up a protective stance to keep guard over the family. This is where they would rebuild. This is where he'd lay down his life, over and over again if he had to, to protect his Lord.

Second to be born was his sister, Sedona. And she reminded Vagabond immediately of her mother. Oilslick wings and goldenrhod scales, and the brightest cyan eyes that watched her father with quiet curiosity.
The third egg never hatched, and soon after its siblings met the world, the spark went out, the electricity crackling in the egg dimmed, and snuffed, and Vagabond knew it was lost. He let out a gutwrenching howl, and his two children tried to howl in mourning for their lost sibling, as well.

So incredibly small. It must be protected at all costs. Arcanum, he will be called, January decided immediately. For he was filled with the magic of his mother, the demoness, the serpent, the queen.
January gains an extra life.
Of the three eggos, only the imperial survived the hatching roll. That's so tragic

Try as he might, Chara could not be awake all hours of every day and night to guard his Lord, and he was beginning to suffer from exhaustion.
He rested, and slept. And when he awoke, he set to work with his construction. It would take several weeks-- time was wibbly wobbly, and the fact of the matter was Arcanum was still young when his 'nanny' was finished construction. Designed to be both a protector and a stewardess, to watch after the young heir and keep him safe.
Carrot was the name he gave her, inspired by her tertiary colouring and her augmented pieces. When Chara finished the final connections and she came to life, he was ecstatic, and rejoiced, before beginning to put her through rigourous testing -- even something made from his claws could not be trusted with the most important job in Sornieth without testing.
It would be several more weeks before he was sure she was safe.

There was something oddly familiar about the little fathom hatchling, something Quill couldn't quite put a finger on, but during one of her missions around the edges of her subterranean kingdom she came across the tiny little thing. Injured, and crying quietly to herself.
She called herself Aya, and said she'd gotten lost from her sister-- the only family she had. She'd wandered away chasing static-charged butterflies, and fallen down a shaft from the surface that fell into the tunnels below ground where Quill kept her court.
Quill could have just left her. It wouldn't have been difficult to ignore the tiny child, but since she was a mother, herself... perhaps she could be this little girls' mother.
Yes.
That's what she would do.
Scooping the small fathom up into her scaled arms and pressing the babe to her furred chest, she traversed the tunnels and scaled the ladders and snaked her way back to Vagabond and her children. So they could meet their new sister.

A new friend!
Arcanum had made a game of escaping from the surveillance-bot, and on one such occasion he was rampaging through the Expanse where he wasn't supposed to go, but he went there plenty anyway! Who was going to stop him?!
He was trapsing along when he heard it.
Tender, soft crying.
He looked for the source -- still too little to take flight, he sure tried, and with large leaps and bounds the tiny imperial came across a sad little fathom sitting but ductwork and the broken entrance to a tunnel system where Arcanum definitely wasn't allowed to go.
What's wrong, he'd asked the little fathom. She was alone, and scared, and that was so unfair! She couldn't answer him. Arcanum wondered if she knew how to talk, but he'd do enough talking for the both of them, he decided, and told her they were going to be best friends. She could come home with him!
Everything would be okay! His dad would make sure of it. His dad was magic. Nothing bad would ever happen to her again.
