@OnceWorried wahhh thank you for noticing! there's an additional bit of science behind that makes them even weirder and cooler - there's bones in the wings of the manakin that are solid (as opposed to the usually hollow bones which birds have to fly), which allows the wings to withstand that rapid beating. The thing is, the wing beating thing is a thing that males do to attract females... who also end up with those solid bones despite arguably being disadvantaged by them, or at least not really getting anything out of it - aside from possibly "sexy sons"? It's a fun little case study in sexual selection and the trade-offs involved!
