my 2 cents on Tom in S3E9
I think in regards to the season 3 finale betrayal, saying "Tom did nothing wrong because Shiv did nothing right" completely undercuts the significance of Tom's decision to alert Logan and how that directly plays into Logan's growing fondness of Tom, and Tom taking the CEO position in the season 4 finale.
For one, no, Shiv was not at all a perfect partner to Tom; however, she did protect him at times. She boosted his position at ATN at the end of season 1 when she blackmailed Gerri about the cruises. She also went directly to Logan in the season 2 finale to insure that Tom would not be the one scapegoated for the cruise scandal, which worked, because then Logan went on to make Kendall the sacrificial lamb.
In the end, Tom is not just motivated to betray her because of an ebb in their relationship. Is that a part of it? Yes. However it was also, at the end of the day, a huge career and power move. Logan viewing Shiv as a viable contender for CEO was ended the second she came to Logan asking for Tom to not be sent to prison. She proved to him that she was not the killer he wanted; and we see this highlighted in season 3, where she's pretty much ignored even when she does do right by the company. Shiv definitely picks up on this, because when the possibility of Tom going to prison becomes a thing again, Shiv is so nonchalant about it that Roman uses it as a strike against her.
Tom, who at the end of the day, is just as ambitious as any other character on the show, makes his move by selling out her and the boys' plans to Logan - which effectively plants the seed in Logan's head that Tom aside from being a seat sniffer, is capable of being a killer. It's no surprise that Logan becomes warmer and warmer to Tom after this. That pat on the shoulder might as well have been a high-five.
So while yes, Shiv had been showing her ass, that's far from the only reason Tom betrays her. Shiv had moments where she protected him, and to say that Shiv had it coming downplays the more interesting aspects of Tom's character: his grit and cunning. At the end of the day, Tom could sell out Shiv, but Shiv could not sell out Tom. And we see that highlighted again in the season 4 finale when she, again, can't bring herself to sell him out, and effectively makes him CEO with her vote.

One of the most important lessons I learned in customer service is that no matter how much help you need, as long as you're nice about it, you won't even crack the top five of worst customers they've had to deal with that day. I will walk an old lady through every step on that pin pad with a smile as long as she's polite, because two calls ago I had to deal with someone screaming about politics for 45 fucking minutes because I wasn't allowed to hang up on him.
Everyone has their first time doing something, everyone makes mistakes, everyone has dumb moments, and as long as you're choosing kindness I'll just laugh it off and help out. Because no matter how dumb you think you are, there was already someone who was just as dumb but was determined to ruin my day over it.

hi! i see you're very knowledgeable about greek mythos. I'm requesting a thread on Ares - seen people call him a proto feminist icon - while other people deny this because of the shepherd myth and tricky consent. im also aware ancient greece wasn't the kindest to him as he represented the worst of war, and they were “civilized” and rejected such, is why some retellings differ with others as they were made to fit an agenda. I guess what I'm asking is your analysis on this and tell me which myths are more reliable? to have a more stable idea of him. if you can link sources even better!

You see, Ares is called "Feminist" not because there's a lot of evidence pointing at it, but because "lack of the contrary".
He is the only male god that has no myths that could frame him for sexual assault directly. At best the case of the sheperd is dubious consent and at worse it is rape, it depends on how you want to read it. And even then, that's soft compared to the other gods of the Pantheon.
Compare to Apollo that has myths like Daphne, Zeus and the abduction of Europa, Poseidon abusing Demeter, some accounts have Dionysus drugging girls to sleep with them even! And etc.
Ares looks really tame in comparison. But this is a case of "The tallest dwarf".
Yeah he doesn't have a lot of mythos that say explicitly that he abused women DIRECTLY. But people forget the Indirect ways in which he harms women just by pure virtue of being the god of war.
He is not a protector of women, nor a god that woman specifically worshiped. He does have the epithet: Feasted by Women, which is one that was gained after a group of women won in battle:

This is the strongest argument for "Feminist Icon Ares". Even going to the point it was this epithet that got missinterpreted, calling it "Protector of Women".
Artemis and Hera were the protectors of women, not Ares.
But then, there are the Amazons too, right? It means Ares cares for women?
Not exactly. Ares still let the Amazons die constantly against greek heroes. The Greeks didn't see the Amazons as worthy of being called heroes, due to conventions of the time. They were, usually, put as enemies for heroes like Heracles, Theseus and Bellepheronte to kill
In the great scheme of things, Ares wasn't exactly the best god for the Amazons. Even then, the Amazons actually worshiped Artemis more than Ares himself.
This is not to say Ares didn't cared, of course. He specially shows grief at the death of Penthesilea
But i think Ares association with the Amazons was more of a thing of... Well, if you notice, he tends to be thrown as the god that favours some of the "obstacles" or "villians" of greek mythology. Some examples are Diomedes (The thracian) and Oenamous, both crazy kings that got magical horses from Ares himself.
Again, the greeks deemed the Amazons as enemies, not allies.
I think, we need to go to the meta meaning to truly understand why Ares ended up with so much mythology that seema to benefit women.
What is Ares the god of? War.
Do women battle in war? They weren't supposed to, according to the men of the era. They were deemed to weak for the offices of war. You even have characters in the Iliad screaming "Woman" as an insult to their enemies.
Did this stopped women from fighting in wars? Absolutly no. Women still fought.
Did women won wars? YES.
You put two and two together: This women won a battle! But women aren't supposed to be able to do that! How did this happen? That's right! *Ares* had to help them!!
Not Athena, ARES. Because Athena was the helper of heroes and therefore, helper of men, which were (according to the ancient greek standards) the ones meant to win wars. When women won battles, that was "unnatural" and therefore, Ares had to be the cause of it.
Amazons (which were inspired in the lives of true warrior women) were unnatural to the greeks, and their battle spirit make them to be quickly related with Ares.
This is my personal theory thought. I haven't seen scholars discuss this so take it with a grain of salt.
I enjoy when these conversations discussing as to whether or not Ares is a feminist is populated by rational and level heads rather than the usual bluster of "Ares is the God of War so he must rape" or "Ares is the protector of women because he avenged his daughter once and fathered the Amazons".
But while my friend @bcowlick (hi again) basically laid out everything I could say about the subject matter in as objective a way as possible, I'd also like to add a couple of points of my own with one of them being Ares is as much...okay as a side effect of his domain, he's also a God of War Averted or Peace in the same way Apollo is the God of Sickness and Healing, Demeter is the God of Winter and Spring, and Artemis is both a goddess of virgin maidens and childbirth. So restricting Ares to his role as 'the War God' is both reductive and unfair.
Second point is, while ancient society, much less modern society, didn't consider Ares a feminist god, and in Tegea, Arcadia he was less 'protector of women' and more 'Entertainer of Woman' to celebrate a victory, almost as if he was a male stripper, it's still worth pointing out that Ares is both direct in how he does business and that includes how he attracts bed partners and that directness is probably why the usual tricks his male family members ofiten do to get partners feel...out of character and probably why he doesn't have any sexual assault myths under him.

I have seen a lot of things tagged as "ghetto fabulous" and didn't have Black people in it, and they know who they are and will pay for their crimes, but furthermore, I'm not an advocate for hyper femininity, per say, but if you say this to me, my brain absolutely formulates the women who I saw as the epitome of womanhood in my childhood and I don't comprehend why so many times when those who *do* subscribe to feminine arts and whatnot, don't necessarily include Black women of certain aesthetics and I cannot help but to judge you because it feels like the same antiblackness of the white gaze and that makes it make sense when the girlies say that hyper femininity is another one of the white supremacist tools.
Only Black people can be ghettofabulous, btw. Anybody else, that's a fabrication, a bastardization, a mistranslation.
