The biggest injustice of both the Golden Compass adaptations is that they keep combining the character of Tony Makarios (not to be confused with Tony Costa) with Billy Costa. In both the movie and the show, they refuse to show us this poor street kid with a daemon named Ratta being sneakily taken by Mrs. Coulter, and instead they just make it Billy who has Ratta and is violently snatched off the street.
Tony Makarios was a little boy who wasn't very bright, but was tender and loving to his mother (who didn't even know how old he was because she was often drowning in alcohol). It was Tony, who couldn't "send a letter" to his mother because he knew she wouldn't be able to read it, so he told Mrs. Coulter to tell his mother where he was going so she wouldn't worry. Tony, who ended up in the fishing village after being Cut from Ratta. Tony, who was found by Lyra, clutching a dead fish, a soulless specter that the people in the village were terrified of. Tony, who died so far from home, still clutching the dead fish, and whose mother thinks he just ran away. And since Billy has now taken on that role, both of Lyra's best friends die in the first book of the series, which is pretty fucked up. Not to mention Ma Costa loses her son.
Anyway, tldr, I just want justice for one of the most tragic characters in the series and justice for Ma Costa 😭 She deserves to have her boy back, and Tony deserves to be his own character.

we need more little dude
I've seen 3 of the 4 john wick movies and I love how all the dialogue is like. A dude will go like "Is that you John Wick?" And John Wick will go "Yeah..." and the guy will go "You doing some John Wicking tonight?" And John Wick will go "Something Like That..." And the dude will go "Shame it had to be this way" and John Wick will go "I'm Sorry..." and then John Wick caves the dude's head in with a giant wooden mallet. And it rules.
The rest of the dialogue is just outtakes from the Vampire the Masquerade player's manual
my dad (Maori) works on a ship with all Maori/Tongan/Samoan fisherman- and one Aussie guy called Jake.
And that wasn't done on purpose just sort of how it ended up, but Jake recently got an injury so they put him on a Different boat just for a little bit (a sit in the wheelhouse and scout type of boat, instead of the main fishing one) and he only got back to my dad's ship today and he was apparently like Shaking. He was Traumatised.
Dad said Jake kept pulling him aside and going "They were all yelling on there, but in a MEAN way" "They didn't clean... Like at ALL"
Jake experienced what a boat full of old school Aussie fisherman is like. That is the norm Jake. You just happened to be on the all Island boy boat on your first go out. "It was time for dinner and they had FROZEN nuggets" Jake that's what they have on ships that are out at sea for months at a time.
On my dad's boat they are eating fresh fish and coconut milk Ceviche. They're grilling steaks on an open bbq on the deck that probably is not regulation. All the guys have their own special knives to prepare sashimi every couple days. Everyone is happily doing their own work so they can clock out early and set up a movie on the deck. Jake did you genuinely believe that's what every boat was doing.
Local Australian man is fed fresh juices and smoked fish for first time- refuses to go back to beef jerky boat life
jake that first night when they served a freezer tray tv dinner and not an overflowing plate of fish that's probably going for conservatively like $40-$80 bucks a kilo but the guys decided Eh we'll catch more let's just fry it up:
Interaction witnessed at post office today:
Elderly lady mail clerk and young customer are chatting. Customer says, "oh! I'm wearing my boss's coat right now, give me something weird to put in the pocket!" Others within earshot all start looking for something because, hey, important quest. Mail clerk finally reaches under counter, pulls out a large roll of labels, and tears one off.

in my head the star wars equivalent of tswift is some human woman named tay’lor spiff or something and her stans are losing their minds over theories that she’s secretly a jedi singing about the horrors of war, even though she’s from a neutral system that hasn’t seen so much as a moral panic in 50 years
the theories get even more egregious during the imperial era, with people straight up thinking she joined the rebellion in secret and is loading her songs with subliminal rebel propaganda. their main piece of evidence for this is if you play a certain song backwards, it sounds like she’s saying “freedom” in shyriiwook. the fans get really defensive if you point out she’s performed at the yearly empire day celebration thrice now and her family historically owned ewok slaves
i regret to inform both you beautiful people that this isn’t going to go how you think it will
spiff fans (also known as “spiffies”) insist that the two decommissioned venator-class destroyers spiff purchased, the bad blood and the reputation, are for diplomatic purposes that benefit the rebellion. jedi’lors have concocted theories that she served on both ships during the clone wars and was respectful of every clone that served there, despite her courtship of a gravball player that thrice advocated against the clone veterans being granted natural citizenship

all goofing aside I don't understand the urge to reimagine Tay'lor Allisoarn Spiff as a secret Jedi fighting for the rebellion when the rebel alliance is literally like overflowing with women fighting the empire. Gara and Ke'Cha and Mileu and Halcey are right there. like what are we doing here. like I'm not even saying you can't like Taylor but why would you hang all your hopes of taking down the empire on her

Isn't Lady Gara a force sensitive?
🪐chirodactylmanisagatewaydrug Follow
Hence why I put her in the list of famous force using women who are in the rebel alliance?

btw to just clarify for anyone who sees this reblog of this post
op is basically saying something along the lines of "yea ik tay'lor spiff is a jedi but like. why is she y'all's only force using rebel icon when there are all these other force users in the rebellion???"
i might have worded this badly but hopefully i got the main point across

Hi OP here I most CERTAINLY DID NOT SAY TAY'LOR SPIFF IS A JEDI???

how are u falling for hypothetical propaganda
despite the fact that jud's form and view of christianity is a very pleasant one, i appreciate that no part of benoit blanc is converted. it's not like i expected benoit to become a christian obviously, but i expected him to potentially stay for a service at the end, when invited. or to show appreciation for what jud is building at his church. even just appreciation that he's welcome.
after the whole movie, when benoit is given the invite, he still says there's nothing he wants less than to stay in that church. it's very, very reasonable and realistic of a traumatized atheist, but i almost never see it depicted in this way. usually they come around to "see the beauty" in one way or another. i just really appreciate that they didn't do that.
I think what stands out to me is the Road to Damascus scene. Benoit doesn't convert, because being religious does not automatically make you a good person. You don't need it, it's a community and system that should not be a requirement, it can help you grow and shape you, but it has it's negatives (which many queer religious people have dealt with, including me). Benoit does not convert, but he is positively influenced by Jud. Jud talks about Damascus, and Benoit ends the movie by ending the game. He "loses", so that Martha has the chance to truly confess and repent, in fact realizing that Grace was a victim.
Benoit did "see the beauty", but not in the church. He saw it in the hope, acceptance, and genuine kindness that Jud had in him. He was changed by the people, not the organization
I want to write a book called “your character dies in the woods” that details all the pitfalls and dangers of being out on the road & in the wild for people without outdoors/wilderness experience bc I cannot keep reading narratives brush over life threatening conditions like nothing is happening.
I just read a book by one of my favorite authors whose plots are essentially airtight, but the MC was walking on a country road on a cold winter night and she was knocked down and fell into a drainage ditch covered in ice, broke through and got covered in icy mud and water.
Then she had a “miserable” 3 more miles to walk to the inn.
Babes she would not MAKE it to that inn.
Are there any other particularly egregious examples?
This book already exists, sort of! Or at least, it’s a biology textbook but I bought it for writing purposes:
It starts with a chapter about freezing to death, and it is without a doubt the scariest thing I’ve read in years (and I read a lot of horror fiction).
This book can be downloaded for free on Researchgate, posted there by the author himself:
[ID: a book cover, titled: "The BIOLOGY of HUMAN SURVIVAL". Underneath is smaller subtitle, that reads "Life and Death in Extreme Environments". By Claude A. Piantadosi. It's in gray-scale, and on the picture there are men, some pulling, others pushing a small boat on sledge. END ID]
