I often think about lies, and our relationship with them. It’s interesting, I think, as someone who claims to hate the act of lying, to wish to never lie.

It’s interesting, to think about how much I lie. How much we all lie, I assume. Not just in the big, scary ways, but in the more mundane ways, too.

How I bend the truth, the things I say to mean things more acceptable. Ommited sentences, half-truths. How I weave a tapestry of inferences, unstated implications, all to fool people, make them think i am who I am not.

It’s not just something i feel like doing, of course. It’s a need, a defense mechanism. Feigning interest to hide need, mimicing attraction to create relation.

It’s all in one direction, towards a unique goal. All to mean, but not say, love me, love me, get close to me, don’t leave me. I can’t let you leave me

It’s all the little, useful lies and mistruths of being around people.

I need you to love me, so I will make you love me. I need you to be here for me, i will make you want it, rely on it. I can’t let you leave me. I won’t let you leave me. I won’t let you want it.

And so i make sure you like me. Make sure you find in me someone who shares your interests, who has thoughtful things to say about them. I make myself into someone who is there for you, in all the ways you need.

I do not want friends, i do not want good conversations. I need them, and I will make sure i get them. You will be my friend, I will make you like me. I will make myself someone you like.

It is said all communication is manipulation, of course. But is this truly right?
