OK.. to get the answer to this you will need to read the Novel “Blood line”
In this book it goes into some detail about the state of the galaxy durring the time of the new republic pre Ben Skywalker flip out.
To sum it up.. Leia had basically spent her whole life in politics she became a senator and got wrapped up in that.
By the time of the novel she is actually becoming very disillusioned with it.
She dedicated her life to that and never decided to study to become a jedi.
There is also the fact that she never became a jedi because she her self realizes that there was a VERY GOOD chance of her falling to the dark side.
The novel discusses her great anger… and at two points in the book she comes out an admits that a ) Sometimes the only thing that kept her going durring the rebellion was her hatred of vader for what he had done to her, and b) That she WILLINGLY used the dark side of the force, tho at the time she didnt know what it was, but she willing used it to kill jabba. Not to save han, not to help luke, she killed him out of her own hate, anger and humiliation. Which explains how a 100lb girl was able to kill a two ton hut.(after doing some research on huts i discovered that.. they are not flabby, it is mostly muscle.. and they have a very think hide to protect them… so a girl that weighs like i said 100lbs soaking wet.. should NOT have been able to kill one with just her bare hands)
So.. the reason leia was not a jedi.. she was to wrapped up in her political career and she was afraid to.
Which also explains that kylo / ben DID NOT get his dark side from Vader.
he got it from leia.

This is it. I told myself I was not going to engage the multiple replies this post got because I was not willing to stir up a debate and/or wank but I can’t take it anymore. Firstly, this was a rhetorical question, as stated in the tags and in a reply to the post, please next time consider if your reply is actually wanted before highjacking a post.
Secondly, as also stated, I really, really do not care about watsonian answers in particular (what’s watsonian vs doylist?). It could be anything from what you just explained (which is a nice answer in and of itself) to “she slipped on a banana once and the Force left her“ and I couldn’t care one bit because…
The doylist reason is that she’s a woman (and an older woman now). They just couldn’t have a badass old lady wielding a lightsaber and/or teaching the ways of the Force to Rey/Finn and/or being a recluse à la Luke.
“But then why would Rey need to go to Luke if Leia could train her it would change the whole plot of the film blah blah blah” -> Here’s a possibility I just thought of in 5 minutes: Leia did train as a jedi but gave it up after what happened with her son and now refuses to have anything to do with the Force for fear of the Dark SIde. Here you go it doesn’t change the plot of the movie that much and now Leia has a nice character arc (where she learns to trust in herself again) planned for the next movies.
Also, she did eventually become a jedi in the EU.

To everyone: I drew Leia as a jedi. This is (surprise!) because I like Leia as a jedi and wanted her to become one since the OT, and this is for people who like Leia as a jedi to enjoy. Please stop highjacking my post. Thanks.
