There is sports discourse. There is yarn discourse. There is food discourse. There is academic discourse (dear sweet god is there academic discourse). If there are people out there collecting brass buttons specifically from 1921, they are going to have discourse about which buttons are trash and whether Person A cheated person B. To be human is to engage in pointless wankery sometimes.

“I hated Alphinaud in ARR bc he was insufferable!” Okay but that was the point. You get that that was the point, right? He’s a rich privileged kid with a whole lot of idealism and big ideas. He’s literally 16. We’ve all met that teenager who’s recently gotten really into social justice and due to the fact that they are an inexperienced teenager believe that they have all the answers and that they alone will fix the world. Alphinaud is what would happen if you gave a Tumblr kid the money and power to try their shit out for real and then immediately get rocked by the real world and humbled to shit. And I personally love that about him.

I kind of love the ARR Alphinaud hate because in many, many ways, Alphinaud is just the voice of the player.

In a purely narrative mechanical sense, Alphy is the one who says out loud things that the voiceless protagonist doesn’t get to say by virtue of not being voiced. And in ARR? He is absolutely the voice of, “Well, I would have simply ___”.

Why are the Scions doing everything themselves? Why don’t they simply get the city-states to build an army for them? He does that. Why don’t they just tell the leaders of Eorzea to–he does that.

And yeah, none of it works out in the end. It turns out you can’t Protagonist your way through everything, even when you are, in fact, the protagonist.
