Maria Skłodowska-Curie's notebooks are crazy once you think about it. They're so radioactive they have to be sealed in a lead box. Imagine a world where atomic theory is forgotten and a dude just goes "yea there's a book that details the secrets of the universe, the machinations of the creation of existence down to its barest essentials, but if you get close to it you fucking die. The more you read it the more your body slowly disassembles into mush." like wat excuse me

I feel so insane about ai. I've had face-to-face conversations with people who use it for therapy, who use it to calculate the safety of pill interactions, who use it for all their emails and grant applications and legal documents and academic papers and finance sheets and for every single question they have about the world, and if you tell them about the ecological costs they just laugh and say "I guess I've used a lot of water." and I've been in multiple gatherings of 10+ people where I'm THE ONLY PERSON who doesn't use chatgpt. it's turning me into a ranting raving pariah, because how don't you people see??? why don't you understand??????? this bullshit didn't exist five years ago, you absolutely do not need it, and it is destroying everything

the other day i saw a tiktok of a woman talking about how her hyper-militant abusive parents would sometimes punish her by “taking away her name” and referring to her as a prisoner number. genuinely terrible stuff, obviously. but i skimmed the comments and. listen. i truly DO NOT mean to dunk too hard on this person, like they could be a kid or something, but.

just. breathtaking. imagine if your primary reference for the concept of the un-personing of prisoners was (check notes) a book series about owls.

Father John Yogurt was defrocked from the clergy today for being asexual, following a papal ruling that "vows of chastity don't count without temptation." The Pope later commented "You gotta have that dog in you"

on watching a parent age

i saw somebody say “what if you’re gone and i haven’t become anything yet” and basically that broke me on a random thursday evening

I've been seeing that quote go around and while making this I think I managed to track it back to "An Oresteia" by Anne Carson

Things two hungarian poets from the 1840s said to each other in their letters that make me crazy:

  • If my soul touches you and it happens to burn you I'm not to blame... it was you who lit it on fire
  • I swear to you on cottage cheese and tobacco
  • If the people rule in poetry, so will they rule in politics and that's the goal of the century! To hell with the aristocracy!
  • My dear buddy,
  • My soul, my bastard,
  • My golden mouthed saintly friend,
  • My rowdy brother,
  • My lovable dummy,
  • If you want to see a dead Pegasus, look no further than me
  • I am trying to learn to smile nicely ( he did not succeed)
  • My dear friend, you better side of my soul
  • I will never forgive you for NOT writing the address on the envelope yourself. A woman's handwriting... and a black seal... dear god, the devil took him! he worked himself to death writing poems, he died! ... and then i opened your letter... Never do this again. Only use black seal vax on your death, and even then, still write the address yourself!
  • I'm reading (your work) for the sixth time. It's really a horrible thing. I'll need to read it again to understand just how awful it is!
  • Sincerely, your friend whose balls are itching
  • It's really good that your sore throat is gone, I can finally strangle you
  • Leave the dedication! Veselényi is a great man but he's still a Lord, and a poet should never dedicate ANYTHING to a Lord
  • I'm hugging you a 1000000000000 times!

My absolute least favorite type of "neurodivergence" (used colloquially to only ever mean "Autism and ADHD") misinformation is the type that posits that being neurodivergent makes you a better person.

"Justice sensitivity" does not mean "neurologically I am a good person who stands up for what's right." It means you have a strong reaction to perceived injustice. But it does not mean your moral compass is calibrated well. The white dudes who are most obsessed with taking away Affirmative Action likely also have "justice sensitivity" -- their sense of injustice is just triggered by something different from what triggers mine, because we have different values. Some people's sense of injustice is triggered by pretty much any situation ever not working out in their favor. Those people can still be "justice sensitive" even if you wouldn't think of them as good people.

Also, there is no neurodivergent condition that makes you automatically capital-H Honest. Some Autistic people aren't good at intentionally lying or find it very uncomfortable to intentionally lie, but others lie just fine and I've met some who did it all the time. "Intentionally lie" is also doing a lot of work here, as you can be very dishonest without intentionally lying if you are prone to lying to yourself, which neurodivergent people are no less likely to do.

There is no neurotype that confers superior moral reasoning or instincts.

My other hot take I think I’ve said already but I’ll say it again bc the discourse is circulating again- I think the fear-mongering about “cozy” books and games is one of the biggest non-issues I’ve ever seen and to be honest feels like people really taking the “finding a bullshit moral reason to justify not liking something”

I dont engage with a lot of “cozy” media but i don’t think those who do are “looking away” from the grim reality of exploitation in society or whatever. media consumption is not praxis

It’s just really odd to see the “the fiction you consume doesn’t dictate your morals” crowd suddenly start making snide comments about how other people partake in fantasy because ppl aren’t considering who is grinding the flour and farming the milk in the cafe DnD romantasy novel they’re reading.

obviously you should engage with challenging media when u can but my enemy is the boot on the neck of the oppressed, not someone with 2637733 hours logged into stardew valley

Sorry 2 jack ur tags but this is essentially how I feel. Like self-awareness and examining why you prefer certain themes in media is good and everyone should expand their horizons but the whole “the cozy genre is basically fascist coddling!” spiel is too corny for me to take seriously
