Expectations for services and experiences involving animal activities

Hosts are responsible for ensuring any services or experiences they provide involving animals are safe and high-quality. This includes, but is not limited to, adhering to any applicable laws or regulations and the following rules:

  • Treat animals humanely: Educate guests on humane treatment of animals in line with our Animal Welfare Guidelines.
  • Maintain appropriate distances: Some animals may feel threatened if someone enters their territory. Remind guests to stay behind barriers where they exist.
  • Avoid startling animals: Advise guests not to make sudden movements or loud noises. Precautions should be taken to avoid startling or stressing animals with photography.
  • Promote awareness: Share information on recognizing aggression to keep guests vigilant. Never allow guests to have direct contact with wild animals. Remind guests to be extra vigilant during nesting or mating periods, as animals may become more territorial. Advise guests to avoid approaching mothers with their offspring. Ask guests to be mindful of older animals, as they may be more fragile or sensitive to interactions.
  • Handle food with care: Advise guests on whether they can provide animals food or treats, and the appropriate way to do so. Also let them know if they can consume food or snacks around animals.
  • Recommend proper attire: Inform guests about appropriate protective clothing, such as closed-toed shoes for activities like horseback riding.
  • Keep things clean: Require guests to wash their hands after interacting with animals to prevent exposure to bacteria and allergens. Require protective gear in handling animals, as appropriate. Properly dispose of manure and waste to reduce health risks and prevent slips or falls.
  • Require supervision of children: Children should always be supervised when interacting with animals. Teach them how to respect animals’ space, and do not let them feed or pet animals without guidance.
