Description

Adding yutu, a fully functional MCP server and CLI for YouTube that allows AI assistants to interact with YouTube resources through the Model Context Protocol. This server provides comprehensive YouTube API access including video management, channel operations, playlist manipulation, and more.

Server Details

  • Server: yutu
  • Changes to: README.md

Motivation and Context

The yutu MCP server fills a gap in the MCP ecosystem by providing comprehensive YouTube integration capabilities. It enables AI assistants to:

  • Manage YouTube videos, channels, and playlists
  • Handle captions, comments, and thumbnails
  • Access YouTube Analytics and Reporting APIs
  • Perform YouTube searches and manage subscriptions
  • Support both CLI and MCP server modes

This server is particularly valuable for content creators, developers, and businesses who want to automate YouTube operations through AI assistants.

How Has This Been Tested?

The server has been tested with:

  • Claude Desktop
  • VS Code
  • Cursor
  • All core YouTube operations including video upload, channel management, and playlist operations

Breaking Changes

None - this is a new server addition.

Types of changes

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update

Checklist

  • I have read the MCP Protocol Documentation
  • My changes follows MCP security best practices
  • I have updated the server's README accordingly
  • I have tested this with an LLM client
  • My code follows the repository's style guidelines
  • New and existing tests pass locally
  • I have added appropriate error handling
  • I have documented all environment variables and configuration options

Additional context

The yutu server requires Google Cloud Platform credentials with YouTube API access. It uses OAuth 2.0 for authentication and supports environment variable configuration for credentials and tokens. The server is available through multiple installation methods including Homebrew, Docker, and direct binary downloads.

Key features:

  • Full YouTube Data API v3 support
  • Optional YouTube Analytics and Reporting APIs
  • Cross-platform compatibility (Linux, macOS, Windows)
  • Docker support for containerized deployments
  • GitHub Actions integration for CI/CD workflows
  • Comprehensive error handling and logging
