EA games released after "May 2008" used a custom version of SecuROM Product Activation, beginning with Mass Effect. It's internally named drEAm.
Key points
- Doesn't have offline activation.
- Can be replaced with generic SecuROM disc check by deleting, renaming or moving
paul.dll. Some newer games let the player to choose from either online activation or generic SecuROM disc check during the installation.
Differences
EA custom paul.dll's digital signature should show Electronic Arts as file description and company name.
EA custom version also has winui.dll file.
Revoke license
EA provides its Game Authorization Management Tool website. On the website games are represented by their covers. Clicking on each will download either the game-specific tool for older games or will open the game-specific deauthorization help page for newer ones, as games starting with The Godfather II include revocation shortcuts.

Activation limit
EA has 5 machine activation limit in most of its games. At the beginning the limit was 3, but after Spore controversy they raised it to 5. After the limit has been exceeded the following message will appear:

Controversy
When EA included SecuROM for the first time with Mass Effect, the game required the player to authorize the game every single 10 days. The idea was so controversial, that EA lifted 10-day authorization, and authorization was only needed for new DLC. The big controversy was also with Spore, because of 3 activations, what led to class-action lawsuit, resulting increasing activation limit from 3 to 5 PCs.
