Ries will carry on the propaganda, demagogues and quacks will become less certain of their short-cut remedies, and _everybody will be made to think_. The evolution of this newly awakened national interest in clean milk follows the seven stages and illustrates the seven health motives presented in Chapter II. I give the story of Robert M. Hartley because he began and prosecuted his pure-milk crusade in a way that can be duplicated in any country town or small city. Robert M. Hartley was a strong-bodied, strong-minded, country-bred man, who started church work in New York City almost as soon as he arrived. He distributed religious tracts among the alleys and hovels that characterized lower New York in 1825. Meeting drunken men and women one after another, he first wondered whether they were helped by tracts, and then decided that the mind befogged with alcohol was unfit to receive the gospel message. Then for fifteen years he threw himself into a total-abstinence crusade, distributing thousands of pamphlets, calling in one year at over four thousand homes to teach the industrial and moral reasons for total abstinence. Finally, he began to wonder whether back of alcoholism there was not still a dark closet that must be explored before men could receive the message of religion and self-control. So in 1843 he organized the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, which ever since has remembered how Hartley found alcoholism back of irreligion, and how back of alcoholism and poverty and ignorant indifference he found indecent housing, unsanitary streets, unwholesome working conditions, and impure food. Dear all, I am puzzled by a strange behaviour when trying to set the line styles and colors in the contour-plots. I'll try to describe it through a reproducible example. I am using gnuplot 4.2 patchlevel 6. *** DESCRIPTION AND REPRODUCIBLE EXAMPLE *** - SURFACE PLOT and CONTOUR PLOT set style line 2 lc rgb "black" lw 2 lt 1 set style line 3 lc rgb "orange" lw 2 lt 4 set style increment user set iso 30 set hidden set contour both f(x,y) = exp(-(x**2 + y**2))*cos(x/4)*sin(y)*cos(2*(x**2+y**2)) splot [-2:2][-2:2] f(x,y) set terminal postscript color enhanced set output "case_3D.ps" replot What do we get here? - the 3D plot is fine (red and solid line, I did not touch it infact) - the first color contour is solid, width = 2, but is RED, not BLACK (despite having indicated lc rgb "black") - the second color contour is dotted, width = 2, but is PINK, not ORANGE - the key (legend) is surprisingly right, showing a black solid and an orange dotted sample lines which do not exist in the contour plot proper. I am confused here: it seems that if I specify the line style, that determines also the color, overriding my specifications. *** GNUPLOT VERSION *** gnuplot> show version long G N U P L O T Version 4.2 patchlevel 6 last modified Sep 2009 System: Linux 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5 Compile options: -READLINE +LIBREADLINE +HISTORY +BACKWARDS_COMPATIBILITY +BINARY_DATA -LIBGD -NOCWDRC +X11 +X11_POLYGON +MULTIBYTE +USE_MOUSE +HIDDEN3D_QUADTREE +DATASTRINGS +HISTOGRAMS +OBJECTS +STRINGVARS +MACROS +IMAGE DRIVER_DIR = "/usr/local/libexec/gnuplot/4.2" GNUPLOT_PS_DIR = "/usr/local/share/gnuplot/4.2/PostScript" HELPFILE = "/usr/local/share/gnuplot/4.2/gnuplot.gih" *** *** Thank you for your help. I am running the version 4.4 release candidate of gnuplot in opensolaris 2009.06 with a wxt terminal type. The plot windows do not consistently close when pressing the [x], and often require a "Force Quit" to close them. Also, sometimes they close on their own! I've copied the text that outputs in this case: gnuplot --persist PPPpos.gp Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x40b)! (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x2000085 unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x2000084 unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x2000089 unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x200008a unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x200008b unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x200008c unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x200008d unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x200008e unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x200008f unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x2000090 unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x2000091 unexpectedly destroyed (<unknown>:16413): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x2000088 unexpectedly destroyed Xlib: sequence lost (0x104dd > 0x4dd) in reply type 0x0! The program '<unknown>' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadImplementation (server does not implement operation)'. (Details: serial 1245 error_code 17 request_code 20 minor_code 0) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
