Accessibility tips for editors

If you are page content editor and you are using screenreader, these tips may improve usability for you with DokuWiki.

Basic navigation in edit mode

Editor opens in layer window on same page in your browser.

There are many buttons on top button toolbar, for formating and buttons for special functions.

Main area is one big textarea window, where is page content. You can freely using movement and edit functions, this is standard textarea.

At bottom there are some important buttons:

  • Save (hotkey S) saves page content and back you to standard view mode.
  • Preview (hotkey P) shows previev of edited area before editor application (see bellow)

Cancel closes editor. If your made changes, editor asks you for closing.

There is one text area named Edit summary. Its practical to shortly describe your changes in this area. This text is shown in page history.

And finally, there is checkbox Minor edit. If you check this, your changes are marked as minor in page history.

Previewing changes

Preview button shows you preview of edited area. This is useful for checking your changes before saving. If you press Preview button or use P hotkey, background page rerenders with preview of wiki text at main text position. You can see how your changes will look like in standard view mode. It menas that you can quickly find preview section by using navigation by headings, preview is marked as H1 headline.

In some screenreaders, NVDA for example, you must go back from editor layer to main page layer, you can using hotkey for this. Then you can find preview section by using navigation by headings.

Remember, your editor is still opened and your changes arent saved yet. You must use Save button or hotkey S to save your changes. You can using screenreader navigation to object application to move to editor. But if you agree with your changes, you can use hotkey S to save changes and back to standard view mode.

Styles buttons

In editor toolbar there are many buttons. Some have hotkeys, some not.

  • Format buttons (bold, italic, lists, etc.)
  • Special insertion buttons (local link, external link, images or media, etc.)
  • Select buttons (smileis, wraps, etc.)
  • Special plugin buttons added via installed plugins

If any button pressed, textual syntax is inserted directly to editor textarea at cursor place.

Local wiki links you may enter two ways:

  1. Directly enter via Formatting Syntax
  2. Using link wizard (hotkey L in editor).

Link assistant opens in layer window top on to editor window. This wizard lets you easilly find and insert internal wiki links to another page.

You can enter some terms to edit field:

  • To find page in current namespace, enter some letters of page ID
  • To find page in some namespace, enter namespace:xxx (namespace first and some letters of page ID)
  • To find anything from page names, delete edit field content and write some text: for example Accessibility finds this page too, it can be located everywhere on wiki

After edit field there is Cancel button. And next there are some standard links for searched pages. Select link and simple ENTER on it or activate it your way and correct link will be inserted to edit textarea on editor.
