CHAPTER 14 DREAM
After the rest of the council members—the highest authority on campus—left the room, hy ushered me into a smaller office, located on the other side of that large room.
“Sit down, Mr. Melinao,” hy told me, and then settled on a sofa located in front of a wall adorned with beautiful paintings of landscapes of the archipelago. After carefully reviewing some papers, the skunktaur focused entirely on me. Hys gaze and posture were somewhat familiar to me.
“Are you aware that you could be left out of this course by not showing up on time here in New Bletchley? Studying at Dewclaw is a privilege. Many students would like to be in your place, perfecting themselves with us,” hy said with a serious tone of voice.
“Tell me, what is your excuse?” hy added.
“I have already submitted my written justification to the admission secretary, Dean Rogar. Everything is there.”
“I understand,” Hy said. Suddenly, hy stood up, and walked towards me.
"But I want to hear it from you directly," hy inquired. I had no desire to talk about what I experienced with Vroeg, least of all with someone unknown. It was something that I considered very intimate and important to me. So I just mentioned the basics.
“And tell me, Mr. Melinao. If you had to delay again to accompany your friend, would you do it again?” inquired the skunktaur. It seemed like a strange question to me, but hy made me think. I looked out the window for a few seconds, and then I responded with a sigh.
“What I did, Dean Rogar, I would have done a thousand times, regardless of the consequences. I can wait a year to go back to Dewclaw because—unlike my friend—I have enough time. Hy, however, didn't have it.” I said stridently, remembering Vroeg, while a tear rolled down my cheek. At that moment, Rogar's face lit up with a wide smile. Hys eyes were incredibly similar to Vroeg’s. Hy approached me, and taking my hands, hy said:
“I did not expect less from someone like you, Esteban. Do you know why I was late to Dewclaw too? I had to attend a funeral at Amistad a few days ago.”
“What?” I said with surprise.
“I know very well who you are, Esteban Melinao, and what you did.” Then, before I could say anything, hy added, smiling, “Vroeg was my brother.”
I was in shock; I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Therefore, hys eyes and smell strongly reminded me of my friend. My legs started shaking, and I couldn't help myself. I started crying like a child again. Hy then took my face in hir hands and said in a sweet voice:
“Now I understand why my brother chose you,” hy said, and then hy gave me a warm and tight hug. For a moment, I felt that it was Vroeg who was holding me. I held onto hym tightly. I didn't want to let go of hym. Hy stroked my hair, while I wet hys shoulder with my tears. We were like this for a long time, hugging each other, touching our souls.
“Now that I have met you, I do not care what happens with my academic situation. I want to tell you that Vroeg has been the best teacher I have ever had in my life. What hy gave me, I could not learn at any university. Hy made me understand that on my trip to Chakona, I received more than what I came to look for. I met wonderful people and lived unforgettable moments. But above all, I understood how I should approach my life, to find true happiness,” I declared, still crying, but hy answered me candidly.
“I am very pleased. I also admired Vroeg. Hy was my older brother and hy taught me many things. Though I haven't seen him in years. Come sit with me boy. Let's talk” hy requested, also excited.
I sat next to hym, and we chatted for a long time. Hy told me about hys family. Hy gave me some details of the life of Vroeg and of them together, when they were young.
At one point, I asked hym, “How did you know that I was the one who accompanied your brother, did Rena or someone from hir family tell you?”
“Oh no. It was Vroeg himself who told me about you.”
“But, you told me you haven't seen each other for years.”
“True, but in the message hy left me, hy mentioned your name, and that you were coming to New Bletchley.”
“Message? I don't understand, Dean Rogar.”
“Oh yeah. I understand that you are not familiar with our traditions. You see, when a skunktaur grows old in a family, hy is regarded and respected as a patriarch. Vroeg was, and since hy knew what would happen to him, hy prepared himself for that moment...some time in advance. So, hy left a goodbye message to every member of hys family or close friends. That message is considered sacred, and can only be received by the person to whom it is addressed. Nobody else. No one else can find out about someone else's message, unless the person shares it of hys own free will.
“Now I understand. It is a beautiful tradition.”
“It is. And that's why I know about you.”
“Wow, Vroeg really amazes me”
“Hy loved you very much. You won hys heart.”
“And I also hym. I would have loved to spend more time with your brother.”
“I know, little one. But although the time you were together was short, it was also intense. We must treasure the good times.”
“That time I was with him, it changed my life,” I added. We did not give another hug as we said goodbye, as it was already late and the dean had other matters to attend to. Before I left that place, hy warned me.
“I cannot guarantee that you will continue in the course, Esteban. I am the dean, but these decisions are made by the academic council. But I promise you that I will do my best so that your trip to Chakona is not in vain.”
“Whatever decision they make, I can assure you that my trip has not been in vain, Dean Rogar,” I replied with relief.
“Hy would be proud,” hy replied with a smile and added “Come back tomorrow, at this time, Esteban. We will have an answer for you.”
“Thank you,” I agreed, and then I left that room. It was still early, and since I missed the visit to the industrial complex with my classmates, I decided to visit the university facilities on my own, to better familiarize myself with the campus.
After touring the buildings, getting to know the different libraries, and exchanging words with some students, I went back to the room that had been assigned to me. I bought packaged food for dinner and enjoyed it very much.
“Maybe this is my last night in New Bletchley,” I thought, as I looked out the window at the gray sky, which was beginning to darken. It was cold as I began to reflect on my future. If I can't study in Dewclaw, there is no point staying in Chakona. If I wait a year here, I would have to spend my savings, unless I find a job. And still, I don't know if the government could extend my student visa, I pondered.
I threw myself on the bed, staring at the ceiling. I closed my eyes and fell asleep. Although I was not sure if I was still awake—then suddenly, I saw myself on a beach. There was a human couple playing with a small child. They looked happy. The sun and the breeze were delicious. I looked at them longingly. Then the couple started arguing with each other. The frightened child began to cry. I began to get distressed. I wanted to intervene in the fight, but couldn't. Frustration began to take hold of me, until suddenly, I felt a hand on my shoulder...
“Remember and treasure the happy moments, Esteban. And discard everything else, because it is useless,” said a voice. I turned to look and it was my friend Vroeg, who was standing next to me.
“Vroeg!!” I screamed with emotion, to then hang onto hys torso, and hug hym. Hy received me warmly and I could smell hys fur again.
“What's wrong, where are we?!” I euphorically exclaimed. Hy calmly answered, “Come. Walk with me.” We did so and we advanced little by little along that beach, moving away from that scene.
“Do you remember that time we walked together on Amistad beach and I asked you about your past and you fainted?”
“Yes. And I woke up laying on you. Wait. You said I passed out because I hadn't been eating breakfast.”
“Well. I assumed. I didn't know you were going to faint,” hy said with a smile.
“Wait...what do you want to tell me? Why did I pass out on that occasion?” I asked, intrigued.
“Well. There was such a negative charge on your mind that I wanted to take a look for myself. Besides, it was you who authorized me to do it, when you told me, ‘Read my mind.’ I did so and then I had to carry you to our mound, hehe. Weak human mind.”
“Vroeg!!”
“Easy son. And well. Now we are here, in that moment.”
“Wait. But that happened days ago!”
“But your mind remembered now.”
“I mean, is this just a memory?”
“Something like that.”
"I'm a little confused," I admitted.
“Time is very mysterious in these places,” hy said.
We continued walking side by side, like that time in Amistad. I was comforted to be in hys company once again. I wanted to stay with hym there, forever. Suddenly, I saw that we were approaching a flying ship, like the ones found in Chakona. I seemed to recognize it as we stopped.
Hy stood in front of me, and taking my shoulders, hy told me, “Esteban, do you understand that it is not worth letting resentment or hatred grow in your heart? Don't waste your precious energy on that. Forgive your parents. Forgive everyone. That's what true freedom is, son. No one is perfect, and we all run the same race. And forgive yourself and seek your happiness. But do not think only of yourself, but also of the happiness of those around you. If you knew how much we influence others, without realizing it...”
“Vroeg...” I pleaded.
“I must go now son...do not forget that love is a truth that goes beyond our material form. Do not be an idiot.”
“Uh?”
“And besides, you have talent. Why don't you study engineering?” hy added, before boarding that ship.
“What? Vroeg! Perhaps, you...you were the skunktaur who advised me 10 years ago? Vroeg! Vroeg!” I tried to tell hym, but the craft had already taken off, fading along with that dream. I woke up crying; the pillow was wet from my tears. Hours had passed and it was daylight again. I couldn't believe what I had experienced. I smiled...in the midst of my sadness, I smiled...and suddenly, without meaning to, I started to laugh out loud in the room. I was too excited. Could Vroeg communicate with me? I had to tell Dean Rogar. So, wasting no time, I ran to hys office.
