CHAPTER 15 DECISIONS
Without even changing my clothes, I went straight to Dean Rogar’s office. Upon arrival, the Caitian admissions secretary stopped me, claiming that the dean was busy.
“Mr. Melinao. I was just going to call you. Dean Rogar and the rest of the academic council are now meeting, looking at your case, among other matters. You cannot interrupt. You will need to wait outside the meeting room.”
“Understood. I thank you for letting me know,” I said politely. Then I sat in an armchair located in the hall outside the living room. While I waited, I thought about the tremendous coincidence that Vroeg's sister was the dean of the engineering college. What other surprise you have prepared for me, crazy old man? I couldn't help but think about how real and vivid that dream had been.
After an hour of waiting, the conference room door finally opened. I was surprised to see that the first person to come out was the skunktaur teacher that I had met in the lecture hall. I stood up, and greeted him politely. Hy just looked at me, not saying anything. Then hy left. After hym came other people and finally the academics of the council.
“Mr. Melinao, the dean will receive you now, in hir office,” the secretary told me.
“Thank you,” I replied. Upon entering, Rogar was checking hys computer.
“Esteban, come on son. I sent for you. As I told you yesterday, the council has already solved your case.”
“Thank you, dean. But first, I would like to tell you something. Last night I dreamed of Vroeg. I mean, I'm not sure, but I think it was a memory of something that happened a few days ago, and that only now, I could remember.”
“Hmmm...?”
“That occasion, we were walking on the beach and I was distraught remembering my past. Then I told him that I was sorry, and he replied, “Well, I'm not.” And then I lost consciousness. I didn't remember what happened until last night!”
“Sit down Esteban and tell me, does your past torment you?” requested the dean with curiosity.
“Yeah...well, not really anymore since that time. It no longer affects me like it used to.”
“Have you noticed that you take things easy?”
“You are right.”
“Hehe. My brother and hys methods. Vroeg was a patriarch with highly developed psionic abilities. I think hy helped you free yourself from the trauma of the past. And I'm happy about that, Esteban.”
“Thank you dean.”
“Good, because tranquility is precisely what you need to hear what I have to say to you.”
“Eh?”
“I'm sorry Esteban. The council decided to remove you from this course here in New Bletchley. Sometimes they are very attached to the rules. Even I am surprised.”
“Okay Dean Rogar. Somehow I expected it. I say again that I do not regret having accompanied your brother on hys final journey.”
“I know Esteban. And I am deeply sorry that you cannot study with us here. Giving privileges to a human, among skunktaurs, could also lead to problems for you. We live in a world where, despite our advanced society, there are still people who think as retrogrades. And we don't want you to expose yourself to that, being the only human in this course.”
“I understand, and I accept the decision, Dean Rogar. Believe me, it was a privilege to meet you.” I said politely, stretching out my hand. But hy turned hys back on me and took a few steps away from me. Then I got up to leave the room.
“Mr. Melinao. Our conversation is not over yet,” said the skunktaur suddenly, in a serious tone.
“I'm sorry, Dean,” I replied and returned to the central chair. Then hy, with a leisurely air, walked around me, saying, “As you know, Chakona is always in need of qualified workers, Esteban. In this context, the central government found it a good idea for universities like Dewclaw to teach pre- and post-graduate courses in various fields of knowledge. Therefore, a few months ago, we signed a federal agreement to increase them.
“Eh? What do you mean, Dean?” I asked. Hy, approaching me, continued.
“That Dewclaw will replicate the course you applied for, in its different branches. And our campus in the capital will deliver it in four more weeks. It is the same course for engineers, and if you still want it, you can enroll there without problems. You won't have to wait a year, Esteban!” hy exclaimed, smiling with open arms. I did not know what to say; It was wonderful. Excitement washed over me at that moment. I wanted to jump for joy. I could study at the Amistad campus, where my friends Sorah and Regthar lived.
“Thank you very much Dean Rogar!” I exclaimed with joy, pouncing on hym with such impetus that I pushed hym over, and we both fell to the ground.
“Oh! Excuse me, what a fool I am,” I said hurriedly, as I stood up. But the skunktaur laughed heartily.
“Esteban, I hadn't played this way for years. I used to do it with my brother when we were kids,” hy said with a smile. Hys words moved me. I began to smell the sweet scent of hys pelt, so much like Vroeg's when hy was with me. It seemed to me that skunktaurs smell better—more intensely—when they are happy. We hugged and hy licked my face. I kissed hym on the forehead, with the same affection as Vroeg.
"Come here!" hy said and pulled my arm, making me fall against hym. I could tell that hy was happy for me too. We laughed, hugging each other for a while on the floor.
“I'm so happy Rogar. Excuse me.”
“Me too, little one. And, since you decided to study with us, there is something else I want to tell you Esteban.”
"I hear you, Dean Rogar," I answered, as I sat next to her.
“You will not have to spend any credits in this course. The university will give you a full special scholarship. This way, you can use your savings on other more essential things.”
“What! But how? A scholarship? But...”
“Don't say anything Esteban. I made the necessary arrangements with the bursar and they agreed to give it to you. You deserve it.”
“But why, Dean?”
“Take it as a boon from me—and from my family—for having stayed with our patriarch until the end. For having been hys partner, for being so generous with hym, Esteban,” hy added, taking my hands. It was inevitable for me to see Vroeg hymself in hys gestures and actions. I hugged hym even tighter and leaned my head against hys chest, while hy shed tears of joy. I did not mind that the Caitian secretary suddenly entered the office and saw us on the floor. Neither did Rogar.
I stayed with hym at hys home in New Bletchley for three days. Hy introduced me to hys partner and some of hys children. Rogar taught me a lot about skunktaurs. Their tastes, their preferences, and in general, what they like and what they don't like. One of the things they like the most is brushing their abundant fur. It is a simple but highly valued way of showing affection and respect towards them. Together with hir family, we toured the most interesting places in New Bletchley. In addition, the dean showed me a large part of the university facilities. I couldn't help but be fascinated by it all. At the end of those three days, I went straight to the airport to catch the plane back to Amistad.
At our farewell, Rogar told me, “I'll keep an eye on your academic performance. Any problem you have in your course, please let me know. Your student visa will be extended until the end of your studies. After that, you must decide, Esteban. And whatever your decision, contact me, okay?”
“As you say, Rogar. Thank you for everything.” I responded to hym with a last hug, after which, I got on the transport that took me to the airport. My heart was overflowing with joy; I couldn't hide it. Now I had before my eyes a better panorama.
