CHAPTER 16 AT HOME

I didn't want to tell Regthar and Sorah about my arrival. On the contrary, I decided to surprise them. When I got off the plane, I went out through a different corridor from the first time. I was no longer a newcomer to the planet. However, I walked to the immigration section, since Regt worked there.
Upon arrival, I asked an official about my big friend. He indicated that Regt was on security duty that day. I started looking for him among all the Renzar in uniform in the place. It was not an easy task, since in this species, they are all very similar to each other. After half an hour of searching around the airport, I gave up. When I was going to leave the place, I finally saw him standing at the entrance of an exit portico. I was very happy to see him again, and I slowly approached him and greeted him head-on.
“Hi Regt!”
“Eh? E...Esteban! What are you doing here?!” he exclaimed, surprised.
“I'm going to study here at Amistad, just as you wanted!”
“What!! Is that true?”
“Yeah, big guy, that's why I came back. My course begins at the local Dewclaw campus in three weeks,” I replied with a smile. I was not quite finished when the Renzar bent down to give me an excited hug.
“Oh Esteban! I can not believe it! Grr...I'm glad to see you son! Wait, I'm going to let Sorah know!” He said, then let go of me and called his personal COMM.
“Sorah, honey, look who's back!” he exclaimed, as we appeared together on the screen.
“Esteban! What happened?” It was heard from the other side.
“The boy will study here at Amistad! How about that, Sorah?” Regt said excitedly.
“Is that true?!” asked the female.
“Yes Sorah. Change of plans. I'll do the course here” I added.
“Oh...by Grom! That's wonderful, son!” she said with excitement.
“Sorah, we'll get home as soon as I get off work, don't worry love,” Regt said later, then cut off the communication.
“Oh, Esteban, I'm so happy! In a short time, I will finish working. Wait for me close by. Eat something. Did you eat something on the plane? You have credits? I can give you if...”
“Hey! Calm down, friend. I'm fine. I'll wait for you nearby at the casino. I'm not in a rush...and yes, I have credits. Don't worry dad, heh heh!” I answered with irony.
“Oh Esteban, it's so nice that you tell me like this, little one...”
“It was just a joke Regt. I don't pretend...”
“Thank you,” he said excitedly. In that instant, I remembered Vroeg's words. “Look not only for your happiness, but also for those around you.” At that moment I understood the great influence that each one has on others, without realizing it at times.
I hugged Regthar once more. And I realized how happy he and Sorah were to have me as a son. I appreciated it from my heart.
“It's okay, Regt. I'll wait for you to go home.”
“Agreed!” he exclaimed happily, after which I went to one of the casinos and waited for him there. Checking my COMM, I was surprised to see a message from Lorel, accompanied by a nice photograph.
“Hello Esteban. I hope you are well. I understand that you do not want to answer me, but I did not forget about you. I present to you Gret, a new member of my clan. Take care,” said Lorel in the message. And in the photograph, Lorel, Liner and Gret appeared, who turned out to be another chakat. They looked happy. I was sincerely happy for hir and responded, congratulating everyone. I also told hir that I wanted to visit them and talk to hir. After a while, I got hir answer. Shi was surprised and happy to hear from me. We agreed to meet soon.
When check-out time came, Regt showed up and quickly led me to his transport. And I say “he took me,” because he was so happy that he made me climb on his back just like that time in the coliseum. He said it was a Grom tradition to carry the cubs. It was useless to remind him that I was already an adult. Given my size, surely they will always treat me like a little boy. And I honestly didn't care. I no longer felt ridiculous riding on his back, because that gesture now made us both happy.
On the way between the airport and his house, Regt talked to me all the way. He told me that this weekend, it was Natany's turn to fight in the women's wrestling tournament. So we agreed to go support her as well. As I passed the coastal path, in front of the hotel where I stayed, I couldn't help but remember Vroeg, looking at that beach once more. I looked at the mound and curiously, I saw a skunktaur lying on the spot. That was curious to me. Apparently that mound had a special appeal for skunktaurs, I thought—and I smiled.
When we got to Regthar's house, Sorah was waiting for us in the front yard. She welcomed me with a warm hug and took me in her arms. We cried together, but this time there were tears of joy. She kept licking my face, and telling me how much she loved me. They were both happy to see me, and I them. To my surprise, Natany was also present inside the house. She had prepared a special welcome dinner. She also greeted me with a hug and carried me in her arms, as if I were a puppy. I was surprised at how strong she was.
“Heh Heh ... Excuse me Esteban, but whenever I can, I practice for the tournament, lifting heavy objects...I'm glad to see you back.” She added, giving me a kiss.
“Natany! You really are strong as Regt. Also good to see you. We will support you in your competition.”
“Thank you, Esteban. Welcome home,” she added happily. I was excited. I did not remember that someone had prepared something to eat in my honor, in all my life. I really wasn't used to that much affection.
We sat down to eat. I told them everything that had happened to me these days. I told them about Vroeg and what I experienced with hym, about his departure and how I met part of hys family. I also told them about Lorel, my encounters with the human Mark and a certain Dr. Goldbloom at the New Bletchley airport. I then told them about Rogar, hys incredible kinship with Vroeg, the scholarship they gave me and how lucky I was to attend the postgraduate courses in Amistad. They listened very attentively and were fascinated by everything that had happened to me.
“So, that friend of yours, Vroeg, gave you the tiara. I suppose I should also thank him for that,” Regt said suddenly.
“I suppose so,” I answered.
“Esteban,” Sorah interjected, “Regt and I...we talk a lot about this. We want you to stay and live with us, here, while you study.”
“This way you will save credits,” Regt quickly added. “I will recondition one of the rooms so that it is yours, you can sleep and study quietly in our house.”
“Thank you very much, both of you. But then, it's only fair that I pay you the rent for the room.”
“Oh no, boy. There's no need. Take care of your savings,” replied the Renzar.
“Regt, I don´t...”
"How could we charge a son?" Sorah replied with that warmth that characterized her.
“Exactly! At least until you work, Esteban!” added the male.
“But, Regt, Sorah. I...I plan to return to Earth, once I finish the course. I have no plans to stay on Chakona.” I declared. Everyone was silent for an instant. Then Regthar spoke.
“But at least, you'll be with us for a year, right Sorah?”
“That's right...we...we can't tell you what to do, Esteban. But while you are here, your company will make us very happy.” she replied with passion.
“And you also make me very happy, opening the doors of your home, and of your heart,” I replied. Again, we all ended up hugging.
That night, the couple insisted on sleeping together with me again. It felt so good to be cared for by such loving creatures. Those hugs, and all the ones I received in Chakona, were freeing my heart from resentment and pain. Sorah hugged me and kept me next to her all night. She used a kind of pajama, so as not to embarrass me. But that didn't bother me; her tabby fur was so soft and warm. I remembered my human mother's hug, like another inexplicable déjà vu. Sorah had become a great mom, whom I respected and loved. And in Regt I saw the father who gave back to me love and affection, what my human father could not give me. I felt a deep inner peace and I no longer judged my earthly parents. My inner star began to shine.
