First I want to say, it's a shame Microsoft forcing Windows 8 users to install such a tool. Who really wants to work on a Desktop-PC with that catastrophic Metro-Thingy? Not to mention how ugly it looks like, it's impossible to manage/launch hundreds or thousands of programs in a rational and logical way using tiles only.
So I tested many different Startmenu-Tools with Windows 8, in fact every I have found on the internet - free and paid. And there's no doubt that Classic Shell is my personal winner!!! (the only real competitor *imho* was Stardock Start8 which isn't free but only 5$)

Classic start menu? You have to be kidding me, there is nothing good about that old piece of junk, you people should evolve.

Love it! First I got it for my Dad's new PC that came with Windows 8. BUT I have it now on my Windows 7 and it's great. To make it even more "classic" I whipped up a new but classic shell button (3-in-1 icon) icon replacement. You can find it at: docs. google. com/ open?id=0By-jpLRb9X02cDdaTkNhTVZyUUk

The ClassicShell start menu lets you create a start menu that works the way you want, with exactly the items you want. You can eliminate the dead wood, and you can get back the functionality that Microsoft destroyed. Every Windows 8 system should have it.

After downloading Win 8 to a couple of my machines, I knew to work efficiently, I STILL need to get to the traditional Windows Desktop on boot. This program brought back the BEST of the old, and combines it with the best of the new features of Win 8, such as quicker boot times, and somewhat faster running speeds. I understand the implementation of the dual interface in Win 8, but for use on non-touch screen PCs, particularly for business use, this program ROCKS! I LOVE IT, and HIGHLY recommend it!

Classic Shell is outstanding!! Microsoft should be paying you.

One can use it in a very simple manner! Thanks.

W O W!! Thanks for a great piece of work for us old workhorses that just want to be able to use our computers as we're accustomed to! Being able to go back 'old school' is so very helpful. And I believe that it will actually help in getting used to Windows 8, while being able to jump around and find most things where we are used to! Keep up the great work!

This is a brilliant piece of work ... I was lost without my Explorer toolbar buttons before I found this, thanks very much for your work. The custom commands option for the Start Menu is also very useful.

great soft for Win8, huge customization and for free!

I was using windows 8 for a few days and I was pulling my hair out. Why MS didn't leave the option to boot to the desktop and to retain the start menu (optional again) I don't know. Thank you for writing this software to make Windows 8 useable again. Donation made by PayPal.

Very good job! Works fast, have a lot of settings to customize and zero bugs.

Needs to add option to bring up the Win+X menu on shift/alt/ctl+click.

Before discovering Classic Shell, I was wondering if Windows 8 would be for me. With it, it makes Windows 8 really usable on a classic laptop and desktop. Yes, these devices still exist and I don't necessarily want to be presented with a UI and features that make little value without a touch screen.

Wonderful project.

This fixes Windows 8 and restores the default old Windows desktop and the Start menu.

I'm not averse to change, but what I like even more is configurability; and that is EXACTLY what this tool provides - you can make the UI work and look the way that is the most comfortable to you. For free! Thank you for your time and effort creating this most valuable tool!

YES!!! Finally there is someone out there who made my world whole again!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. This "bug" in Windows 7 has been soooo annoying all this time and now there is a cure! May all that's good in the world come to you!

Love Classic Shell. Adds the start button back to W8 release preview. I have a suggestion. Your Shell icon could be more vibrant. Would suggest losing the shading or using more vibrant colors. Works great. Thanks!

Dude! *Dude!* Windows 7's absurd "snap newly opened folders to the bottom" behaviour for the tree pane in explorer.exe has had me frustrated since the day I decided to upgrade from XP. Your little program has just enabled me to actually interact with my filesystem in a sensible way again. I love you so much right now. I actually like 7's start menu so I'm glad you've made your fixes all modular and configurable. ClassicShell *also* seems to solve (as a side effect of the way it adds itself to explorer.exe, I'd wager, but still) the issue in 7's explorer.exe requiring a physical click in either pane in order for mouse scroll events to be delivered there, so I no longer need the WizMouse application to fix that, which itself causes issues with some games. You, to coin a phrase, are the hero this city deserves. I am hoping you've got a donate button.

GREAT!!! Not only does Classic Shell bring a start menu to the Windows 8 desktop, it brings a start menu that, in many ways, is BETTER (and certainly more configurable) than the start menus found in previous versions of Windows. And so I for one am happy that Windows removed its start menu so that I can now add "Classic Shell" in its place. Thanks to Classic Shell developers for providing such a great product. And thanks to Microsoft for finally allowing for upgrading the start menu. I especially appreciate that Classic Shell offers (under the "Controls" tab) a way to configure hot-keys for 1) opening the classic start menu and 2) going to the Windows 8 "metro" start screen. But I'll just note that the menu descriptors under the "Controls" tab are a bit confusing. In particular, the menu descriptor "Windows start menu" would be better labelled as the "Metro start screen" (or similar) so as to avoid confusion. Once trivial complaint: I notice that, after selecting "skip metro screen" on the "Windows 8 Settings" tab, the metro screen still briefly flickers before the desktop loads. Not a big deal, but irritating nonetheless.

What can I say, the integration is seamless, fast, VERY customizable and it just works. With every new version it gets even better and makes Windows 7 as well as the the other related versions of Windows more enjoyable to use. Thanks
