Anonymous asked:

Hiii!!!! Thank you so much for the ask!!!

How do I force myself to write scenes I don’t feel like writing?

Oh my friend… I smash my face against my keyboard until something intelligent comes out or failing that, I force myself to sit down with a great amount of whining and carrying on, and I poop out the words with little enthusiasm but enough determination to make up for it.

I remind myself that I can edit shitty writing, but I can’t edit a blank page. So I muscle through and plunk out one word after another until I have something I can edit.

Sometimes I’ll take a break to clear my head though most of the time I just put enough pressure on myself to do the thing that you’d think real lives were on the line, not just fictional ones, and mentally beat the shit out of myself until I do the thing.

The point of all this is to say, I don’t really have a good solution. Not a healthy one anyway. I get through the scenes I don’t wanna write through sheer willpower and barring that, I implement the ol’ standby of crushing shame.

daphnevermeer asked:

Well I'm just fascinated to see if 'Pulse' and 'Flatline' are in any way related!

Hiiii!!!! And thank you for the ask!!! They are indeed related! As is Resuscitation.

Answer is for this tag/ask game.

So these three books are set in the same universe as Defiance and (No) Strings Attached. They are the story of three brothers who are mentioned in the other two books. I actually wrote Pulse and Flatline over a decade ago, but there is a lot that I want to change and edit, so they don’t really see the light of day. These books kind of feel like my magnum opus a bit. Or maybe it’s my white whale. I’ve been chasing after them for so long. I plan to write them eventually. After Defiance and (No) Strings Attached are finished.

Pulse and Flatline follow Wu Li and his brother Eugene as they step into their own after their father dies, leaving each of them a very generous inheritance. Eugene, ever the golden boy, steps into his father’s footsteps, both legally and illegally, helped along by a man known to others only as “The Doctor.” He meets Hanna, a working class woman from an immigrant family and will stop at nothing to have her.

Meanwhile, Wu Li uses his inheritance to build the night club, Pulse, which serves as a cover for the far more lucrative business of drugs and prostitution. He meets two young women who remind him of things he’d rather forget, and is forced to confront his troubling past, a matter not helped by the appearance of a cunning rival who knows exactly what buttons to push to make Wu Li unravel.

Police infiltrate both their lives, relentless in their pursuit to bring the brothers down. It’s a game of cat and mouse, with many players weaving in and out of the story.

Resuscitation is the story of the third brother, Tong Zeng. He is a genuine psychopath who catches feelings and really doesn’t like it.

I Wish A Bitch Would is titled after the song I Wish A Bitch Would by Delilah Bon.

These are my rough notes for it. Unfortunately I haven’t actually written any of it. Just have the notes.

Character works as a secretary at a law firm that takes defense cases- this is how she sources her kills and eventually how they connect her crimes and catch her.

Written from the future looking back as she’s being interviewed in prison by a young psychologist/psychiatrist who diagnoses DID and is looking to make their name off this case.

Crusty old detective who’s been on the case and is skeptical of the DID diagnosis.  Generally thinks the main character is just a psycho.

Character begins killing after an assault that she survives.  She sees people getting away with horrible crimes against women and children in her job and feels powerless and defeated.  She fixates on killing her attacker but then another victim kills her attacker and worse yet, her firm handles her defense and loses, sending her to prison for life.  Character sees the injustice and since she is unable to kill her attacker, she goes after men on the registry or maybe meets people in a bar.  Could even be innocent, she seeks someone out from the registry with the intention of finding out why they do what they do and then gets there and she snaps, ending up killing the guy.  She evolves.  Learns with each kill and quickly becomes extremely proficient, using the registry or bating people in bars.  But no one is paying attention.  So she reaches out to a journalist.  Still her kills get very little recognition.  So she uses her job to find out about people who never even went to trial, whose cases were hushed up or settled out of court to protect the client’s reputation.  After her first higher profile kill she goes to the journalist and says something like, “Are you paying attention now?”

Eventually she’s caught- obviously since she’s telling this story from prison.

Heavy juxtaposition between her being labeled as having DID and therefore being disorganized and the fact that she is evolving and not devolving, indicating that she is likely organized.  Leave the question for the reader to answer, is she actually mentally ill or is she in fact just very smart and manipulative.

Throughout the story, tell what she’s telling alongside the story of her assault so that you don’t know for a while that the story of her assault is actually about her.

Show the cops checking into the veracity of her testimony, looking for victims they missed.

Witchy Story (Death is a Friend) is one that I started working on when I stepped away from Christianity. It was right after my grandpa on my dad’s side passed away. He had been a lifelong atheist, which drove my VERY religious family NUTS. But I was there trying to figure out what I actually believed and I ended up settling on something witchy. I believe in the universe. I believe in intention and kindness. And I worked in healthcare at the time, so aside from my grandfather, I saw a lot of death at work too. I needed a way to contextualize death that wasn’t the Christian rhetoric I had been raised with. I ended on basically this:

Two friends.  One is a kitchen witch, though not overly trained and mostly intuitive.  Personality very like my sister. Practical and pragmatic but she is sick.  Dying.  Not usually one to dabble in summoning or even more formalized spells she takes a chance and summons death to try and barter for a little more time.  Death shows up in the middle of a sunny afternoon and their interactions are not what you’d expect.

On the other side, her friend is a green witch.  The first lady hasn’t told her friend that she’s sick but she knows anyway when a plant that she has named after her friend starts doing very poorly.  Slight hilarity ensues when her friend’s plant starts doing a little too well after death’s visit.

Death- Comes and goes.  Different forms each time.  Has one unique characteristic that identifies them whenever they’re seen in the story.  Initial meeting is an old energetic man, with bright eyes, heavily wrinkled skin, thinning hair, a patched over jumper, lots of wisdom and quite surprisingly humble.  The kind of kind old man you’d actually accept candy from.  She’ll see him in this form again at the very end.  He has striking gray eyes. Then a lady at the grocery store. A cashier. Kind and gentle, almost motherly. She has the same eyes. Various people over the course of the story weaving in and out, but always with the same eyes.

End.  Death is inevitable and yet actually kind.  There is no escape.  Only doing our best with what time we have.  A play on the mix of the mystical and ethereal and the mundane.

Resuscitation is the third book in a three-book series that follows some of the characters introduced in Defiance and (No) Strings Attached. It follows three brothers as they struggle to reconcile their pasts and presents while relentlessly pursuing their love interests and power. Resuscitation in particular will follow the third, and eldest brother, Tong Zeng as he comes out from his brothers’ shadows, having had a very troubling past, and even more troubling future.

An excerpt from Witchy Story (Death is a Friend)

“Hey!  We still on for tea today?”  Chloe greets readily enough when her phone rings, setting aside the paper she was reading.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong.”  Chloe’s brow furrows and she flicks a glance at the paper she had been reading wondering if her friend is suddenly clairvoyant.  “Why would you ask that?”

“Your plant is wilting around the edges.”  Flora tells her seriously.  “I just watered it yesterday.  And I played the music you both like.  So something must be up on your end.  Are you sick?  Did you get bad news?  Is your dad okay?  When’s the last time you took time for yourse-?”

“Woah, stop Flo!”  Chloe feels like she’s been caught up in a whirlwind of concern and good intention.  “You’re worried because the plant you named after me is sick?”

“You know that’s how I do.”  Flora says a little defensively and Chloe can just picture her setting her prominent jaw, lower lip protruding like a pouting child.

“It’s a String-of-Pearls.”  Chloe reminds her.  “They’re very touchy plants.”

“Not this touchy.  The vines are withered and the buds look ready to fall off.  What’s going on?”

Chloe takes a deep breath and debates her options, eyes once again settling on the paper on her counter, the damning results glaring up at her.  She could keep it a secret but Flora would only continue to pester her, especially if her plant isn’t doing well.  No, better she get it over with.  That way Flora will have a chance to get used to the idea.  It’s only fair that way.  “I need to tell you something but I want to do it in person.  Are we good for tea at eleven?”

“I’ll be there at ten.”

~*~

Chloe’s not sure what she expected to happen but the pathetic little whiff of sweet smoke, it’s  honey-like tendrils curling lazily towards the white stucco ceiling with no more ceremony than a freshly blown out candle was decidedly not it.  Heaving a sigh she sits quiet, letting her eyes slide shut for a moment of self indulgent misery.  It had been a last ditch attempt but the same part of her that firmly believes there is power in the recipes she makes and all the herbs she mixes had hoped that somehow, impossibly this summoning spell would work.  Opening her eyes she follows the smoke as it floats heavenward and dissipates, mind wandering.  Would that be the way she would go too, sooner than she’d like and with no more fanfare than her impotent summoning ritual?  Just a fizzle as the mundane tries desperately to be more and then the inevitable snuffing out and subsequent dissolution leaving no more mark on the world than the smudge of charcoal in the bottom of her crockery and the lingering saccharine smell left behind.

~*~

“Can I help you?”  Chloe says opening the door to find the most adorable withered little old man on her doorstep.  His face is lined liberally with both smile and frown lines, grey eyes timelessly bright and yet somehow unfathomable and impossibly deep.  He doesn’t look confused but Chloe can’t think what he’s doing on her doorstep otherwise.

The old man’s eyes twinkle.  “I think the question is, can I help you?”

He’s definitely confused.  Adorable in his cable knit olive green sweater and tweed trousers, but definitely confused.  She leans out the door and looks both ways up and down the street.  “Sir, are you lost?  Is there someone I can call for you?”

“Young lady, just because I’m old doesn’t mean I’m lost.”  The man tells her sternly shifting a bit to lean more of his weight on his cane.  “Now, are you going to invite me in for a cup of tea or are you gonna keep me out here wondering why you summoned me?”

“Summoned you?”  Chloe flicks a glance over her shoulder at her coffee table still laden down with the supplies from the summoning ritual Flora had given her.  Surely he can’t mean…

“Yes, my dear.  Summoned me.”  He shifts impatiently and then just sort of brushes his way past her into the living room.  “Now, about that tea.”

“Uh-”  Chloe stumbles after him completely bewildered.  “Stop- stop.  I don’t even know your name.  Who are you?”

“I see I’m going to have to spell it out for you.”  The old man says reaching the kitchen table and pulling up a seat.  “Why don’t you put the kettle on and then sit down.  We have a lot to talk about.”

Does anybody else have a thing that just… Sends you through the fucking roof with rage every time you see it? Like, I don’t even have a good reason, but EVERY TIME I see people losing their shit over *the thing* I have a visceral need to crush everything in reach with my bare hands while screaming like a feral teapot, anything to release the trapped rage in my chest.

scribeoffate asked:

Possible story prompt for the game? 🥰

I should really read all the rules! Lol. I didn’t realize there was an interaction bit and I was SUPER confused for a minute there! XD

It’s just a back and forth dialogue that popped into my head and I liked it so I wrote it down. I don’t know what I’d do with it, but I liked it too much to just let it go into the ether.

“Are you going to kill me?”

“Do I seem merciful to you?”

“So you are going to kill me.”

“I asked you if you take me for a merciful man.”

“What does that have to do with anything? You have no mercy. You will no doubt kill me and never lose one ounce of sleep.”

“This is true, I could kill you without conscience, but that is not my point.”

“What is your point?”

“Think, stupid girl, think.  I am not merciful.”

“So you plan to kill me?!"

"I see I shall have to spell it out.  What happens when we die?"

"No one knows.  Religions would claim-”

“I care not for what religions would claim.  What do we know for certain about when a person dies?" ”

She shakes her head.  “I do not understand."

"Tsk tsk.  Do you continue as you were before death after you die?"

"N-no."

"Correct.  So it stands to reason that everything we are, everything we experience; the good, the painful; they all cease to exist when we die, do they not?"

"I suppose so-”

“So I’ll ask you again, do I seem merciful to you?”

The reality of her situation comes crashing down and the blood drains from her face as realization sinks in.  “No.  You’re not."

"Precisely.  Suffering is for the living and I, my dear, intend to make you suffer.”

I really wanna start doing some drabbles and one-shots as a way to warm up my writing, but I’m really struggling to come up with ideas. So, dear followers and moots, if you were feeling inspired and maybe a little generous, I would love, love, LOVE it if you sent me an ask with a little story prompt in it. I don’t know when I’ll respond, but I’ll use them as warm ups and post them as I do them. I’ll tag you too, if that’s something you want.

No love-triangles or cheating please. Most other things are fair game. I’ll do my best to write something for whatever you send me.
