Had someone told me, in January 2023 when I read Heated Rivalry (for the first time) that almost three years later I’d be watching Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander fuck on my laptop screen I’d have laughed at the absurdity.

heated rivalry? more like healing rivalry. a slice of sunlight in the void. passion in a winter of isolation. a gentle escape, a safe space, a kick-start for self-acceptance. a joyful conclusion to an awful year, a happy ending after growing inured to ambiguity at best. one show united unlikely communities, from queer people to women to seasoned press to twitter stans to bookish nerds to straight hockey bros. it's beautiful that two men falling in love and having unabashed, smutty sex had the entire internet holding hands and cheering them on. years and years of sanitized slop, queerbaiting, actors and showrunners dismissing shippers despite farming them to breed popularity, the widespread belittlement of the romance genre despite it single-handedly upholding entire industries—and then. heated rivalry subverted every disappointment we've been forced to swallow, and didn't waste one moment letting the entire world know they were proud to do so. i hope jacob, connor, and hudson feel vindicated for every creative choice they made, and so, so proud of themselves. you all deserve sunlight.
