Ineffective customer service
To summarise roughly 6 months ago I purchased a number of drives for my businesses NAS server. 1 drive was faulty so I called customer service. The representative was fantastic and recommended I return the device as it was under 14 days from purchase.
Now months later and numerous calls with your support staff I am still yet to receive my refund for this drive. I have heard excuse after excuse and blaming a system upgrade but frankly I should not be spending my time constantly calling for updates
Unfortunately this is still unresolved and I am still waiting.

I’ve been building rigs for 20 years and I have never dealt with a company as difficult as WD/SanDisk. I’ve had two of their NVMe drives fail in less than a year. My 4TB SN850X flagship just died out of nowhere, and a second drive I bought for my son started throwing reliability warnings after one week of use. For "premium" gaming storage, the failure rate is pathetic. I have older drives from other brands that have been through three different builds and still work perfectly, but these WD drives are a total gamble.
The support experience was even worse. When I tried to RMA the 4TB drive, they basically refused to honor the warranty because of my location. Even though I’m in the EU, they claimed they couldn't handle the logistics or provide a functioning return label for my region. On top of the shipping excuses, their "warranty policy" is a joke. They actually try to tell you that the warranty is void if you remove the sticker to get better thermal contact with a real heatsink. For anyone who knows their stuff, you know these drives need proper cooling to avoid throttling, and in the EU, it’s actually illegal for them to void a warranty over a sticker unless they can prove you caused the damage.
It’s clear this company wants to hide behind technicalities and "void" stickers instead of standing by their hardware. Between the high failure rates and the fact that they will dodge your RMA if you live anywhere slightly off the map, I’m done with them. If you’re a serious builder who actually cares about your data and your consumer rights, save yourself the headache and buy a Samsung or a Crucial instead.

Purchased from Walmart, box was new and sealed, when opened it was missing USB cord, could not connect to computer, luckily we had an extra one we could use, but you pay a nice price to find out it's missing piece's, so Western Digital should do better at checking contents of their boxes

I strongly do not recommend this company. First, I had to wait over 4 weeks for the delivery of the ordered product, which was already very frustrating. After returning the order, the situation became even worse — I have now been waiting for my refund for over a month. I contacted the company multiple times, and each time I received a different excuse, such as the Christmas period or system issues. No real help or concrete action was ever taken. In the end, I was forced to file a credit card chargeback. This company clearly shows a lack of respect for its customers and fails to meet basic service standards.

Bought hard drive in Feb '24
Bought hard drive in Feb '24. It failed to mount my macbook. Contacted western digital. After trying on different computers, different cables etc the tech agreed the drive is defective and is within warranty period. However, they keep saying that the case is escalated but never honour the warranty. They do not give any reason. Every time I contacted them, the answer is the same: they are sorry be patient and then silence. Obviously this company doesn't care about customer satisfaction and does not stand behind its products.

I am extremely disappointed with Western Digital’s handling of my refund for a defective hard drive. Western Digital received the returned drive on 12/12/25, yet as of 1/6/26 there has been no refund, no status update, and no proactive communication.
Despite making two calls to customer support, I have only been told that my case was placed in a “priority queue.” Unfortunately, that claim has meant nothing in practice. I receive no updates unless I call, and even then I’m repeatedly told I should “hear something soon,” which never happens.
This level of poor follow-up and lack of accountability is unacceptable, especially for a well-known brand. A delayed refund, combined with vague assurances and no meaningful communication, has left me with little confidence in Western Digital’s customer support. I expected far better.
It was great brand a decade ago...
Decade ago, WD was a premium brand, great customer service, high quality products, everything top-tier. I used only their drives in my home network.
But over the last few years it’s been a complete disappointment. First their website got hacked and purchases were impossible for a long time. Now around 70% of their products are unavailable on the website. It’s even hard to buy their products in regular shops.
Eventually, although very reluctantly, I switched to Seagate. If this lack of organisation and poor marketing continues, I don’t see a bright future for the company.

If you are such trashbag company with trashbag engineers, please make toys, not something that holds valuable data. External hard drive cable will be broken within 2 weeks. Can't connect to half of the devices you are using them. When you copy on them, be sure you will likely loose some data as you are using services and devices with the most idiotic company in the world.
Data Center grade hd's from WD
Purchased two, fairly expensive harddrives. Both cold swap, 18TB - not opened. Unpacked both 5 years later, one of them working fine, the other defective from getgo. Contacted WD directly. Well, no service or support confirmed. So much for "Data Center" grade, and "Enterprise RMA". Thank you, WD. Rest assured, I will not do business with you again.
Awful company
Awful company. They take no responsibility for their product. They refuse support, ignore issues, and leave you without any help. They take your money and offer nothing in return. Their service is unreliable and their communication is poor. You end up with a faulty item and no path to resolution. Stay away from this fraudulent company.
Horrid Service
The first time I bought a large capacity hard drive it was dead on arrival, two months later, it was replaced. Second purchase they sent it to the wrong city when the invoice showed the correct information.

This place would have no stars if it was available I have been back and forth with these people trying to get my refund for something that I did not want and they can't even get the refund right now I want it all canceled and they better cancel it and refund everything tired of these games
Bought their top of the line enterprise…
Bought their top of the line enterprise disk, it broke after 4 months, returned it for an RMA and theyve had it for a month and wont send a replacement. Each time i speak to their support they just say oh just keep waiting. Ask to speak to a supervisor i get told one isnt available. (I dont believe this as twice no supervisor is availble, yeah right). Their support doesnt care and its been a month that i have no disk for my server and WD doesnt give a damn
Terrible warranty support
I purchased Red Pro NAS drives for my QNAP backup. One drive failed after two years and I made a warranty claim as it was still under a 5 year warranty. The process to get an RMA was convoluted at best. I sent the drive back and was informed that I would receive a replacement in 5-7 business days. It is currently 3 weeks and I am still waiting. I called warranty support several times with the most recent stating that their replacement department was undergoing maintenance and they could not tell me when the drive will ship. I will never purchase another Western Digital drive.

I have a my book. 76 hours use. 2 tb of data destroyed that i cannot get back. Normally with criminals there is a possibilty of justice. Not with wd though
RMAs are so slow
RMAs are so slow. I've been waiting two and a half weeks so far, with no signs of anything happening. My parcel was sent next day (at my cost) and is just sat there marked "Received / Processing". A drive turning up dead on arrival is annoying, but a big company like WD should offer better support than this. Definitely will be posting the same info on reddit, X, FaceBook etc, with the hope it informs more people of what to expect if they buy WD.

I have had 2 drives from WD and never been able to recover data in anger. Seems WD have a tactic to EOL products frequently. Hardware EOL, OS EOL, Software EOL, support links go to dead end web pages. It really does appear to be designed to frustrate. I have never managed to use these drives in anger. When I need to go back to my data, it's inaccessible due to some EOL component. I'm so frustrated today that I tried their chatbot and it was useless. I just want reliable backup that I can access if needed in x years time!!
