Do you prefer alt text put into the images under that [ALT] button, or do you think putting into the body of text itself is better i.e. “image id: a sandwich. end image id”

Which do you prefer?

“disabled placards/signs/bathrooms have a wheelchair picture on them so wheelchair users have it easier than all other disabled people” is something people in the disability community on tumblr actually seem to believe and it’s shocking

autistic-umeboshi

lets be for real as the disabled community. no one has it easy. not the autistic person that can’t stim and needs anxiety meds. not the person with ADHD that has to work 3 jobs to support a family. not the person that can’t afford their mobility aides because prices are too high.

wheelchair users especially have it bad, since ive seen multiple occasions where they have been trodden on, ramps used for skateboarders or large bathroom stalls used by folks who don’t need them. folks with canes are often ignored and walked into, them blamed for “not paying attention” despite their blindness. the autistic folks having to mask for hours then being called lazy after using most of their energy to appear normal, then being called assholes for “dropping the act”.

the only folks that have it easy with disabilities are those who aren’t disabled, who aren’t in this community.

i don’t think i have to be “full blown” autistic or paralyzed from the waist down to understand that we’re all in this together. inclusivity, especially with minorities, is extremely important for survival.

Hot take but I think abled people shouldn't be allowed to decide what a disabled person needs and what are reasonable accommodations

autistic-umeboshi

honestly i feel like most people should be able to *reasonably* choose their accommodations. (by reasonably i mean not cheating the system because someone is bound to do some bullshit that ruins it for everyone, i think you get my point)

i feel like really basic accommodations (especially softening environments for i.e. autistic ppl and assisting those who need care to live a comfortable life) should be the bare minimum.

i cannot, even with all the information in the world, determine how disabling conditions are for people (especially due to personal experiences and sensitivity to pain), and if they deserve accommodation. no one can. and if anyone tries to tell you otherwise, they’re an idiot.

friendly reminder to support disabled folks around you! offer help and be open to making mistakes and such. especially younger disabled folks, who are much more susceptible to being traumatized and hurt by environments that refuse to support their needs. schools especially are a key target of this, and are extremely important in a child’s life. no, they will not “get better”, it is not an illness and should never be treated as such.
