Can't afford art school?

After seeing post like this 👇

image

And this gem 👇

image

As well as countless of others from the AI generator community. Just talking about how "inaccessible art" is, I decided why not show how wrong these guys are while also helping anyone who actually wants to learn.

Here is the first one ART TEACHERS! There are plenty online and in places like youtube.

📺Here is my list:

  1. Proko (Free, mostly teaches anatomy and how to draw people. But does have art talks and teaches the basics.)
  2. Marc Brunet (Free but he does have other classes for a cheap price. Use to work for Blizzard and teaches you everything)
  3. Aaron Rutten (free, tips about art, talks about art programs and the best products for digital art)
  4. BoroCG (free, teaches a verity of art mediums from 3D modeling to digital painting. As well as some tips that can be used across styles)
  5. Jesse J. Jones (free, talks about animating)
  6. Jesus Conde (free, teaches digital painting and has classes in Spanish)
  7. Mohammed Agbadi (free, he gives some advice in some videos and talks about art)
  8. Ross Draws (free, he does have other classes for a good price. Mostly teaching character designs and simple backgrounds.)
  9. SamDoesArts (free, gives good advice and critiques)
  10. Drawfee Show (free, they do give some good advice and great inspiration)
  11. The Art of Aaron Blaise ( useful tips for digital art and animation. Was an animator for Disney. Mostly nature art)
  12. Bobby Chiu ( useful tips and interviews with artist who are in the industry or making a living as artist)
  13. Sinix Design (has some tips on drawing people)
  14. Winged canvas (art school for free on a verity of mediums)
  15. Bob Ross (just a good time, learn how to paint, as well as how too relax when doing art. "there are no mistakes only happy accidents", this channel also provides tips from another artist)
  16. Scott Christian Sava (Inspiration and provides tips and advice)
  17. Pikat (art advice and critiques)
  18. Drawbox (a suggested cheap online art school, made of a community of artist)
  19. Skillshare (A cheap learning site that has art classes ranging from traditional to digital. As well as Animation and tutorials on art programs. All under one price, in the USA it's around $34 a month)
  20. Human anatomy for artist (not a video or teacher but the site is full of awesome refs to practice and get better at anatomy)

Second part BOOKS, I have collected some books that have helped me and might help others.

📚Here is my list:

  1. The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.
  2. "Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.
  3. "Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.
  4. "Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.
  5. "Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.
  6. "Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.
  7. "Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.
  8. "Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.
  9. "An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.
  10. Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.

📝As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. If you want to go fancy Michaels is always a good place for traditional supplies. They also get in some good sales and discounts. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are usually more expensive.

For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.

💻As for art programs here is a list of Free to pay.

  1. Clip Studio paint ( you can choose to pay once or sub and get updates. Galaxy, Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, or Chromebook device. )
  2. Procreate ( pay once for $9.99 usd, IPAD & IPHONE ONLY)
  3. Blender (for 3D modules/sculpting, animation and more. Free)
  4. PaintTool SAI (pay but has a 31 day free trail)
  5. Krita (Free)
  6. mypaint (free)
  7. FireAlpaca (free)
  8. Aseprite ($19.99 usd but has a free trail, for pixel art Windows & macOS)
  9. Drawpile (free and for if you want to draw with others)
  10. IbisPaint (free, phone app ONLY)
  11. Medibang (free, IPAD, Android and PC)

NOTE: Some of these can work on almost any computer like Clip and Sai but others will require a bit stronger computer like Blender. Please check their sites for if your computer is compatible.

So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.

I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.

Hope this was helpful and have a great day.

Boosting this in case any of the programs and books suggested are useful.

All the photos on this tumblr ad the animal photo reference site I run is another resource available for artists to use!

As long as you’re not using AI to create your art, you can reference / trace / draw / recombine / make any sort of art you want, with any of the photos, for free.

Problem with ai "artists" is not that they believe art to be inaccessible.

They don't want to learn. They don't want to think, and I don't mean "use critical thinking and effort to develop a new skill".

I mean they don't want to literally think at the most basic level.

Use of plagiarism engines literally gives people mental lobotomy to the point their cognitive ability shrinks and they can't do anything else except type simple sentences.

Use of ai shuts off our ability to critically think, to do multi-step tasks and to learn new things.

You can't reason with ai users because they can't comprehend written text anymore.

“There are no female aliens in our game because we don’t know how to make a female version of this alien” You know that alien you just designed? That male alien? Give it a female voice actor and have characters refer to it as she. That’s it. That’s literally all you have to do

It never ceases to amaze me how people proudly declare their incapacity to do basic things while also pretending you buy their shit and call them professionals or artists. If you don’t know how to make things, then learn. Especially if it’s so simple (see above).

teeth studies

beanzbyartificalmeans

As somebody with funky teeth (healthy, just wonky) who gets really insecure about them I think studying teeth is great for expressive character design and it really helps on the representation front!

At the end of the day if your teeth complete their function and don't cause you any unbearable problems, they're perfect and I think more people need to realise that.

David Bowie is an incredible example, he had uneven yellow teeth for most of his life, if anything it became part of his look and his style and he's the reason I like my teeth now yeah, don't be insecure of your teeth, they're beautiful despite what beauty standards tell you ;)

It’s here !! The guide for two-legged people who don’t know how to draw wheelchairs !!!

7 pages of infodump !

Disclaimer : I don’t know everything, I have one (1) experience of wheelchair user who used both bad and good chairs, and I share what I learned.

Image description :

1) Calvin in his wheelchair saying “yo” under a huge title “how to draw manual wheelchairs properly by Calvin Arium, a wheelchair user comic artist”.

2) A character says “my character self propels in a chair that was outdated in 1970 lol”
Calvin says “so it looks like you two legged people don’t know the difference between an hospital chair and a chair made to be independant”
an arrow point the crapppy chair, saying “we never want to see this again”

a bubble says “the hospital chair is extremely unpractical, tough considering it’s cheaper than a good custom chair a lot of us have only this”

3) a character hurt himself trying to reach the wheels of the hospital chair. Several arrows point why the chair is unpractical : “high backrest restrain shoulders movement” “huge armrest restrains wheel access” “separated footrest : amovible, cheap, bulky” “x structure, foldable but heavy” “huge front casters for stability” “heavy wheels”

4) Several arrows point an active wheelchair (the KSL by Küshall) : “usually no armrest” “a low backrest allow more movement” “light, design, ferning expersive” “special cushion to avoind injuries” “knee angle is usually 90°” “one single piece of frame, sometimes entirely welded” “weight : from 4 to 10kg” “often rigid” “center of the wheel is the center of gravity” “higher quality wheels : less spikes”

5) A hand grab different parts of the wheel, pushing harder in the second half. Bubbles says “some have gloves, some don’t. The hand must grab the biggest area possible. Less movement = more energy. This is a common but not only way to push.Calvin is on his back wheels, rolling on grass and dirt
bubble says “popping a wheelie is when a wheelchair user rolls on their back wheels to roll on every complicated surface.

6) several drawings illustrate the folding frame, the ergonomic but rigid and expensive backrest, the separated footrest (only for folding frame), the handles, the folding handles, athe amovibles handles, or no handles, the cool fancy loopwheels, the pretty custom colors

7) More Features ! The fancy rigid-foldable frame, the anti tippers (sometimes used by beginners), the motorization (wheels, smart drive) when propelling yourself is difficult
Calvin says “and now vroom vroom motherfuckers”

disclaimer: I am east asian. if anyone who is not white sees anything wrong with my phrasing, inaccuracies, or insensitivity, or something I missed, please feel free to add on. I’m just one person with one perspective; none of what I say should be taken as The Singular way to draw an Asian character. if you havent done so already, please take the effort to expand your view of Asian culture outside this one tutorial.

if a white person reblogs this and adds something stupid I’m going to bite and kick you like a wild animal

I LOVE this post and wanted to add some additional info, cause I see a lot of people who assume that drawing asian hair is the same as drawing white hair. This is not the case! There’s more to it than just the color.

Image description for the original post and my addition are underneath the read more at the end.

Thank you for reading! Once again, image description for my images and OP’s images are under the cut.

Just like OP, I’m only one single person, so if anyone wants to correct me or add something I missed, then go for it. And further disclaimer, there are exceptions to everything I’ve said in this post, and it only applies to East and Southeast asian people who are either not mixed or white-mixed, as those are the hair types I’m most familiar with.

Edit: AUGH I FORGOT TO mention this but @ everyone in the comments talking about blue eyes on biracial asians, here’s another guide I made that goes over color inheritance for biracial people:

How I draw skin Part 2: DON”T DRAW NATIVE PEOPLE WITH RED SKIN!!!! A tutorial

For the first tutorial on how I draw skin, see the post here.

But seriously, I’ve seen too many drawings of Native characters with literal red/pink skin to count so just in case some of you are having troubles with drawing Native people, I’ve provided a guide for you. Please take my swatches if it helps!! and no more red skinned people, please <0<

Disclaimer: this tutorial is mainly about the artistic depictions of Indigenous Peoples in North America, where the slur and redskin caricature originated, but it would still be racist to draw other non-North/Central/South American Indigenous groups like this so…..don’t.

caxeia

???? As a native American I’m naturally lighter toned, yeah im darker than all my friends but light native Americans exist too,,,, we arent just poor people who got harassed off of our land and look a traditional way

iidrils

image

Where did I lose you?

princess-cut-diamond

I think caxeia  was referring to the Pocahontas part. Op said it was bad to draw her “too light” and then in the next example, Op says native Americans come in different shades and colors. Why is it bad to draw Poca too light? Because it’s no t canon?

The part that mentions red/pink undertones also isn’t very clear. How do you draw a non-racist depiction of a native American with red/pink undertones? An example would be nice. How do you know previous artists weren’t trying to depict “native americans with red/pink” undertones and failed to depict it.well? The artists weren’t exactly using 2020 technology.

I also don’t understand why most of the images used in the first 2 examples (before the Pocahontas example)are racist.

Basically, I want to know what non-racist images of native Americans look like.

A part 2 would be nice.

iidrils

I clarified this with that person, and it’s bad to draw Pocahontas light because its whitewashing? While Natives DO come in ALL shades and colors, Pocahontas is not that light. Whitewashing is racist. In my experience, most of the Natives drawn red as caricatures are also brown skinned, but I also wanted to address whitewashing.

ALL of the examples of the first part are racist because they’re literally as red or almost as red as the mascot caricature next to them. Literally NOBODY looks like that. And if your first instinct is to draw a Native person red/pink, then that’s internalized racism again, learned from anti-native caricatures meant to dehumanize us. And people attempting red undertones and failing is still racist, but that’s why I made this tutorial, with the hopes people would practice NOT doing that. Referencing real people with red undertones will help.

Here is my OC Regina, who has red undertones and who I like to draw quite vibrantly, in varying light situations:

image

She literally looks NOTHING like the racist examples I gave, even the ones where she’s the most saturated.

Here are some examples of other, canon native characters, drawn respectfully, ome with red undertones:

image

Again, none of them look anything like the racist examples. “Undertones” is the key: it’s a tone of the skin, the tint, a tip of the sliding scale in color, it doesn’t turn somebody’s skin an unnatural color. So drawing Native people respectfully will depend on the factors of lighting, hue, shade, and saturation. It takes practice. But if you’re really worried, then just draw your person with yellow undertones. And if you absolutely refuse/cant draw native people without drawing them vibrant red then you probably shouldn’t be drawing native people. Here is an excellent post on skintone by writingwithcolor. I also expand on the usage of red for Native people here.

How to draw Afro textured 4c hair - an explanation/Tutorial

ami0amii

For those of you that don’t know what 4c hair is, 4c hair is a hair texture type that contains coils to small and tight that the hair appears to be more puffy rather than curly ( like to photo below ) this is in NO WAY to be confused with curly hair. there is a drastic difference.

image

As a black artist that primarily draws characters with 4c hair, I’ve been asked many times to do a tutorial on 4c hair so here we go~

image

before we get into 4c hair, lets take a moment to fully understand it by talking about hair texture in a general sense first

image

let’s take a look at this example of straight hair vs curly hair ( 1 type straight hair vs 3 type curly hair )

image

If you take a moment to compare the two you’ll notice straight hair is flat, it has no texture. Straight hair perfectly hangs down similar to liquid-like silk. It’s lack of curl pattern is the reason as to why it hangs perfectly flat.

curly hair on the other hand doesn’t lie down flat and silky like straight hair, It’s more thick. Curly hair in it’s raw and unstyled state has a trapezoid like shape this is because the sides of the hair spread more outward.

image

So why is this? Why is straight hair flat and curly hair thick?

the answer to that question is a thing called piling up. When it comes to hair texture, the shape of the hair strands aren’t the only thing that matters, its how the strands coexist with each other, Curly hair strands coexist by piling up on top each other.

moisture also effects hair texture too, different hair types absorbs moisture differently, thus the thickness of each hair type is different.

image
image

…..soooo, how does this all relate to how to draw 4c hair??

Well let’s take a look at the drawing below. Notice how the arrows go outward more as the hair texture gets curlier. As we’ve already discussed, this is because hair piles up, The curlier the hair texture, the more it piles up on each other, the bigger it gets, the more outward the arrows go.

Out of any hair texture, 4C hair has the most curls. Because of this, the hair piles up on each other so much that it doesn’t lie down flat like straight hair, nor does it make a trapezoid like shape like curly hair, it instead becomes more cloud like.❤️

image

This is what you need to take into account when it comes to drawing 4C hair.

image

Think of it as piling up a bunch of cotton balls on each other. The most cotton on top of top to lead to a bigger patch of  cotton. this is 4c hair.

How to not draw 4c hair:

Garnet fanart. Let’s talk about Garnet Fanart. I notice a trend that when artists draw Garnet from Steven universe, her hair texture is usually changed to 3 type curly like texture. This subtle form of White washing has confused me because this is inaccurate.

image

Garnet’s hair is in the shape of a cube. Though 3 type hair piles up on each other, it isn’t curly nor thick enough for their hair to stay in the shape of a cube. Curly hair lies down more than 4c hair. So garnet’s hair being in the shape of a cube is a dead giveaway that it is 4C. Why do you think hairstyles like flat tops are usually seen on black men with 4c hair? It’s because, the 4c hair texture is thick and strong enough to stay in whatever shape you put it in.

image

please, if you’re drawing a character with 4c hair, avoid drawing it like curly 3 type hair, this is very anti-black and texturist.

So, how do you draw 4c hair?

honestly, its the most easy thing in the world

image
image
image

i wanna clarify that blobby looking 4c drawings ( like the one on the top left ) can work depending on how cartoony your art style is.

Another thing that I want to greatly clarify when it comes to drawing 4C hair is, YOU. DONT. NEED. TO. DRAW. EVERY. HAIR. STRAND!…..like, seriously. I’ve gotten many messages about how 4C hair is hard to draw, and it’s always left me confused; but then I find out that the same people that have trouble drawing 4C hair, attempt to draw every single strand of hair. This is unnecessarily time consuming because it’s merely impossible to get every single detail down, especially when you have a simple cartoon style. 4C hair does not require much effort, all you’re doing is drawing lumps. It’s that simple, nothing more nor nothing less.

The reason why I greatly advise all of you to avoid drawing every single hair strand is because in real life, when you look at a 4C textured Afro, your eyes don’t pick up on each individual hair strand like straight or curly hair. 4C hair, appears to be more undefined and cloud like, so attempting to draw each and every individual strand is unnecessary and will most likely end up looking inaccurate.

Anyways! that’s it for now! there will be a part 2 to this tutorial that will come out next week! i hope you guys have learned from this and apply it to your black character in your art!~

How I draw kisses!

elvirasteckningar

A quick tutorial/cheat sheet on how I draw kisses!! I’m going to assume you already know how to draw a head and how to angle it, because that’s an entire procedure in itself. I’m going to focus on mainly the lips and also try and tackle some common mistakes when you’re first starting out.

Pursing the lips

image

So this is boring but crucial. If you don’t purse, their is no real kiss (take notes) bc placing your lips on top of someone else’s is not how you kiss… The most important part are the corners of the mouth, especially from the side view, because that’s what changes the most.

The actual kissing yeee

Let’s start do a basic side view kiss on the lips. And believe it or not, I think this one is the hardest!

image

Think about which parts of the face are going to be in front of the other! This can take some time to get the hang of, but once you get that down it’s easy. Also, focus on getting the heads at the right distance and angle. A common mistake is drawing them too close.

The Lightning Shape:

image

Still keeping in mind which part of the line is “Red’s” upper lip and which part is “Blue’s” lower lip, play around with the shape of the lightning. Very subtle changes can have a very strong impact! I usually go by feel, so take your time, but here are some things to look out for:

image

Details squishing etc.

So yeah once the lightning shape looks good, I usually add details and squish parts of the face that will touch. Which usually includes the noses, but from this angle they won’t squish unless you intend on making nice big noses <3. By now it should look something like this:

image

You don’t have to add the corners of the mouth! I usually do when I want to show that the character is smiling.

One technique used a lot in anime/manga + other cartoony art styles, is fading lines where two soft-ish objects press hard against each other. The picture above explains it.

Common mistakes

Getting down the crucial kissing part of fanart is hard and you will mess upp SO MANY TIIIIIIMES, but you learn from your mistakes, so don’t be discouraged. There are some things though that I frequently see when people draw kisses that makes it look awkward and stale, many of which I used to do myself. Here are some examples:

image

Try your best to avoid these. Most of the mistakes have little to do with the lips and more to do with the angle of the head. So getting that down before you move on to the lips is important.

¾ view Kissing

There are not a lot of angles where you actually see the lips meet (or at least not that I can draw…). Depending on how the heads are placed in relation to each other, you may or may not see the lips in a ¾ view. The way I have demonstrated is done in a way that the nose will bump into the other’s upper cheek.

image

Aaand that’s about it! These things will make more and more sense the more you draw them. At first it can seem very hard with so many things to keep track of, and it is, but practice makes perfect!

Rule of thumb: does the angle and position of the heads make sense? How are the lips going to align? What parts of the face are going to be in front of the other? How much will the lips purse? And finally, what is going to squish?

Thank you for reading! 😘
