Virgil Finlay “Foundation Trilogy” pencil preliminaries

TRANTOR-a world of metal! This completely mechanized planet was the center of the Galactic Empire, the kernel of the human race, the stainless-steel symbol of man's final, utter conquest over his environment.

“In the 1960's, Finlay did a series of six illustrations for Asimov's classic series ‘Foundation’ which were used on an advertising brochure for the Science Fiction Book Club's collection of the series.”

image

The stereo-projected image of HARI SEL-DON, the master psycho-historian who established the Foundation, appears before the governors on the eve of the first major crisis.

image

ATOMIC "JEWELRY" - a mantle of splendor for any woman who wore the special device of polished metal links. With gadgets like this, the Merchant Princes expanded the Foundation's economic influence.

image

THE LENS -a complex calculator which projects a reproduction of the heavens as seen from any given point within the Galaxy! This remarkable instrument was the space pilot's compass -vital to hyperspace travel.

image

THE VISI-SONOR - a "musical" instrument which, when played upon, could actually stimulate the listener's mind directly! Its radiations produced sensual delights unlike any others in experience... they could even kill!

image

GALACTIC WAR! -The sleek vessels of the Foundation's atomic fleet meet in space combat with the larger, less maneuverable Empire ships, to determine who will ultimately control the Galaxy!

The original brochure

Bonus points to whoever finds the finished art of any of these.

EDIT: found two. The Lens and Galactic War

"Your species have certain tendencies my people never had. From your mind I can see easily that there are tendencies against the welfare of the whole."

[David replied,] "If you speak of such things as crime and war, then see in my mind that the vast majority of humans fights the anti-social tendencies and that though our progress against them is slow, it is certain."

Uh why is Daneel telling Hari that Giskard invented and named the Zeroth Law? Is this another of Asimov's moments of completely ignoring important plot points from his previous books? It's so annoying, I thought we were past this

blogquantumreality

This inconsistency bothered me, but extratextually, Asimov was known for being unfastidious about exact continuity in his novel universes, and in-verse, it can be seen as Daneel memorializing Giskard.

Which I will now have feels about.

This is such an insult to Daneel's character and the Robot series, did this fucker not read Robots & Empire?? It was no effort for Daneel to keep his memories of Elijah and he was very worried about losing them. These authors keep butchering Asimov's characters, especially Daneel, I'm so pissed off.

It’s stuff like that makes me refuse to accept the “Second Foundation Trilogy” as being in any way acceptably canonical.

Roger Macbride Allen’s Second Robot Trilogy though is definitely a worthy addition to the canon.
