Opera (Without an Opera House)

Watching and listening to opera, even if there's no opera house near you, is more accessible than you might expect. I post a fortnightly list of upcoming opera video streams, but that focuses on newly-available content. There's much more to see beyond that.

Below the cut is an extensive but non-comprehensive list of resources for watching and listening to opera all over the world. Many of these streams are free, others are available on a rental or subscription basis. English captions are available unless otherwise specified.

Okay so its like how there's a spectrum between two chronologically adjacent art movements and there's a handful of pieces where asking if something is Renaissance or Baroque is a great way to start a fistfight between art nerds.

I hadn't considered the vocals supporting orchestra vs orchestra supporting vocals angle, probably because I have APD and can usually only hear one or the other at once.

I do love that I can use "Is Gilbert & Sullivan Opera?" as a follow-up argument to "CATS is an Opera".

As a person with a bachelor degree in classical composition who has made an opera and a song cycle - I approve of this explanation!

@pileofcreatures re: you and I watching operas together, here’s a fun explanation! We’ve seen Barbiere in spoken, shortened style with narrator, even.

The opera I watched recently, Der Freischütz, has entirely spoken texts *and* recitativo! Carmen als has both a spoken dialogue version and a version with recitative. I’ve admittedly also seen some weirder things like Nozze with spoken texts unaccompanied. Also Der Rosenkavalier with even more singspiel in it.

I recently asked a caligrapher who did requests at an art market to do the opera lyric “une dame de haut parage tiens mon coeur en un doux servage, et je brule pour ses attraits” and I specified that he could do it with the ʃ because the story is set in the 1200’s….
But NOTHING prepared me for how he also added the speaker’s name

People who honestly think there shouldn’t be a proshot release of theater shows because then people wouldn’t go to the theater anymore are so fucking dumb holy shit how dumb do you have to be did people stop watching footbal games because it also airs on tv? did people stop going to concers because you could get the dvd? holy shit just let poor people have a taste of the thing too god damn it

I should add, as an opera fan, this is something opera got over long ago. I can access proshot recordings of practically every major opera production of the last 30 years, because most of them got official dvds. And that didn’t kill opera. Tickets for opera productions can often be gotten for cheap too. Operas, despite their reputation are actually really good about accessibility, at least in terms of cost.

But broadway musicals? The community that are mostly having this debate? My options are buying a ticket (for a large sum, plus a plane trip to New York), a sound-only official cast recording, a shaky low-fi bootleg video or a hollywood movie adaptation if I’m lucky. Tickets for musicals on broadway and the west end are often sold out and for large prices, and I doubt proshot recordings would put any major dent in that.

So it’d be nice to have a chance to experience a watered down version of shows ballets plays or etc. because I liked them and there’s so many I might not get to see
