A top experience

Whenever an issue arose in my dialogue with the professionals recommended by Reedsy, the Reedsy team responded immediately, and I always felt their support and efficiency.
While on Goodreads or other platforms you have to be extremely patient before someone responds, and the response is often incomplete or off-topic, the Reedsy team seemed very prompt and well-organized to me. Everything on their website is clear and simple, and the entire system is very well organized and customer-friendly. I will return to them for future projects related to my book!

Reedsy is Amazing!

I've really been enjoying Reedsy for writing my first book. It is very well organized and has many tools to help make your writing experience the easiest and most enjoyable it can be. I really enjoy all the book matter sections on the left hand side when writing. It shows you every part of your book in tabs so you can easily switch back and forth between whichever ones you need. The only thing I think I'd change is the one feature that is only excess able to people who pay for it. It shows you what words and phrases you've used the most and I wish it was free. Of course everything can't be free, but I think that feature would be useful to anyone writing, not just premium members.

I feel much more confident after having used Reedsy editorial services to approach literary agents and publishers. If you are looking for a one-stop shop for all your writing needs, go no further. You'll find authentic and top-notch resources here. Their list of professionals is reliable and prompt, besides providing you with choices that most likely would fit your budget. I strongly recommend writers, especially first-time writers to explore Reedsy for specialized and experienced help.

WORST EDITOR WORKED THERE

Andy Ross took my money (outside of Reedsy) but didn't do the job, in my opinion. My Simon & Schuster editor's advice proves Ross didn't do much and missed a critical issue - the book was simply misclassified - it wasn't in the PI genre but was a legal investigative thriller and merely needed a courtroom ending, among some minor things. Tell Andy Ross to return my money, or since YOU introduced me, Reedsy, perhaps you should refund me. After the book is published and the money comes in, I will hire an attorney to handle this issue. To the people who read this, I would not use them. To Reesy: I have photographed this message with a time/date stamp, so don't tamper with it.

Dear James,

By your own admission here, you chose to hire and pay Andy Ross *outside of Reedsy* — which is in and of itself a breach of our terms of use.

But on top of this, after having a seemingly negative experience with him (or so you claim), you expect us (Reedsy) to offer you a refund?

Think about it this way: you find a place to stay through Airbnb, but decide to circumvent the platform (breaking their terms of use) and contact the owner directly. During your stay, you encounter some issues — would you reach out to Airbnb for help, or to request a refund?

Even better, would you go to Trustpilot to leave a negative review about Airbnb, the platform you shamelessly circumvented and robbed of their fees?

If you answered "yes" to the above questions, there is really nothing we (or anyone) can do for you.

I still wish you the best for your book, though.

Positive experience working with publishing specialists

I’ve had a very positive experience using Reedsy while preparing my professional handbook for publication. The platform made it straightforward to connect with experienced publishing professionals, and communication and project management were clear and well structured.

The quality of the editorial work delivered was excellent, and the process felt professional and reliable throughout. I would recommend Reedsy to authors seeking access to skilled specialists across the publishing workflow.

I didn't have a great experience with this platform!

As a first-time book writer, I know that I have a lot to learn about how the editing and publishing process works. After doing some research online, I found Reedsy, and readily joined (should have looked at some reviews first!). I found two suitable editors, but the one closest to me, which would have made a meeting possible, took some time to answer my reply to his e-mail, while the other one was waiting, reason why I contacted him to see if he was still interested. He was, and I was happy about it, but he seemed to be an incredibly busy man, which worried me. How was someone who is so very busy with his main job, have the time to edit my book? Also, he never reacted to the fact that I mentioned that I live quite close by, which I found strange, whether he would accept meeting or not.

I asked questions about the website, and started to have ever more difficulty obtaining answers, and had problems navigating it, which I didn't find intuitive at all! They did answer the first questions, but then either didn't answer at all, or would take quite a few days. That didn't seem ideal to me. At a certain point in time, I couldn't even send more requests, because two of the editors I had contacted already where still on the list, and there was nothing I could do delete them. Eventually, I started to wonder how they knew if the editors were genuine, and whether they would just be using AI.

I did contact that first editor outside of Reedsy, to make sure that he really existed, but he told me, through Reedsy, that he does not work outside of the platform, meaning, we would never have any contact in person, never a phone call, nothing. I thought that Reedsy was just a platform to put professionals in contact with the writers? And when I found out, through the reviews here, that they take 20% of everything you pay, which means that you pay 20% more, that didn't feel right either. I am now looking for a freelancer, who really wants to work with me. This is a true story about severe Emotional Domestic Abuse, which I think is very important bring out in the open!!! Too many women are suffering and have been for a very long time, but it will rise or fall with a great editor, who, maybe also manages to help me to find a great publisher!

I didn't need all the stress Reedsy created. The sad part is that there are more of these sites (maybe belonging to the same people), and that is not what I am after. But there must be great freelance editors out there????? It is a pity that we can't contact the reviewers here.................. they would be a great source of information! Sadly, the world is not a trustworthy place anymore, and many people are just after a quick buck!

UPDATE: Whether an editor would agree to meet or not, that is indeed their choice, but politely informing me that they wouldn't do it, would be a great thing. As I pointed out, I am new at this, so, dialogue is a very useful thing! Why did I try to find the editor? Simply because I didn't believe anymore that he was a real person. As we know, this day and age, no one knows who is real and not. Reedsy stopped answering my questions, no matter whether I sent them through the chat, or e-mail, no one answered. Then I answered the editor's last message, and got a message back saying that the message wouldn't be delivered. Also, I couldn't send anymore requests, as I explained, either, because he and another one would have received the request too, and it seemed crazy to send a request to someone I was already in contact with. Anyway, there should be a way to choose exactly who one wanted to contact! But no one ever answered that question either! All in all, I wanted to know whether he really was the person on the site, and if not, whether he knew what was going on. I think that this day and age that is the thing to do. It was never meant to work with him outside of the platform, if those were not the rules, in case he was the same person who was on the platform. I actually never thought that after the introduction, one would be tied to the website until the end, and anyone would have access to the manuscript! There was also the matter of an editor I contacted, who, just a few hours later (nighttime here in the UK), declined because I had been unresponsive. I contacted the admins, never heard anything back. That said, my journey continues! By the way, as far as the 10% payable from each person concerned, the writer in fact pays 20%, as it is budged in the price they pay! You just get 20% on the top. But, that is an agreement, so, fair enough!

Reply from Reedsy

Dear Francesca, I'm sorry you had a negative experience on Reedsy.

Based on your review, I can confirm that Reedsy (or any online platform, for that matter), is definitely not the place for you.

To offer a bit of perspective, yes, we do charge fees if and when you hire an editor, illustrator, marketer, or other professional through Reedsy. The fees are 10% on each side. While you may find this "doesn't feel right," this is our *business model*. We wouldn't be able to run Reedsy in the first place if we didn't charge any fees… This allows us to offer a great number of collaboration tools, including secure payment, messages, file-sharing, project management, and calls with automated transcripts — all in one place. Not to mention that any projects through Reedsy are covered by our Project Protection Policy: https://reedsy.com/faq/common-questions/project-protection — an additional safety net for authors.

Regarding the editors on Reedsy, most (if not all) of them are busy professionals. We are extremely selective in terms of who we allow on the Marketplace, and all of them are consummate professionals that are usually booked up weeks, if not months in advance. They are definitely not "AI", as we verify the identity of each and every one. We only allow you to reach out to a maximum of five at a time to respect their time.

While some may be open to meeting up in person, this is really not the norm (whether on Reedsy or in editing in general). It's something you can ask about, but don't be surprised if they politely ignore, or decline, the request.

Finally, I'll point out that contacting Reedsy editors outside of Reedsy, as you did, is a massive violation of our Terms of Use, and makes you liable to pay us an Introduction Fee, as outlined in our Terms of Use. This is the reason why editors will refuse to work with you outside of the platform. You can, however, definitely have calls with editors through Reedsy.

All in all, I really believe Reedsy wasn't the right place for you. That said, I'd also encourage you to change your mindset and expectations regarding professional editors. Most of them won't be able to meet in person, and the likelihood that they'll champion your book to a publisher is low as well (that can certainly happen, but it's extremely rare).

In any case, I do wish you the very best of luck finding an editor, and with your book in general. I agree that it is an important story to get out there, and I hope you can do so in a way that works best for you — whether Reedsy is involved or not.
