    What If...

  • I appreciate the sentiment but I don't get all those "we made it to the longest night of the year! the light will start returning soon! it's all uphill from here & we're halfway there!" posts because like. Oct-Dec is the easier half of Winter. Jan-Apr is way harder. there's no big holidays or decorations, everyone is kind of over the whole Cozy Hygge Sweaters & Cocoa vibe so they're just tired & restless instead, and the whole thing is so drawn out & uneventful that it feels like it lasts 10x longer

  • omg, so much this! The only joy in January and February is going through seed catalogues and planning what needs to be started indoors in March, vs direct sown in May.

  • Don't ever let anyone tell you disability rep doesn't matter, because I just got a comment on one of my fics from a person whose husband has struggled with driving for fifteen years because he can only use his left foot to drive, and they had no idea left foot gas pedal modifiers are a thing until they read my fic that involved a character getting their leg amputated.

It was a tiny scene at the end of the fic, one I put in because I'd been researching left-foot driving adaptions for myself at the time due to some leg issues of my own. But it was something the commenter and their husband had never heard of before, so now the commenter is going to get him one as a surprise and for the first time in his life this guy is going to be able to drive comfortably.

It matters. Not just the big pieces of representation, but the little ones too.

(And yes, if you have issues with your right leg, it is easy and relatively inexpensive to modify your vehicle for left foot driving! You just need to be willing to drill into the floor of your vehicle, or have a mechanic do it. No electronic modifications or anything, it's purely mechanical. Just make sure you're getting a system from a good manufacturer that has done safety testing.)

  • Insane how they can still do this. Like just show up and kidnap a president of a supposedly sovereign country

  • Watching NBC. “They took Maduro into custody” its incredible. Into “custody”

  • Everything the US does along these lines is also a show of force intended for the rest of the world imo. Like hi in case you forgot (we didn’t) we can and will operate with complete impunity

  • My resolution last year was to do one thing before bed that would make my morning feel easier, and that’s become a daily habit that I’m carrying into this new year.

Some nights even filling up the kettle and setting an empty mug out for my morning tea felt hard. But I was always thankful for it in the morning.

Other nights, one thing would lead to another, and I’d wake up in a clean house with everything ready to go.

And, on a rare few nights, the one thing that I could do to make my morning easier was going straight to bed and allowing myself to rest.

What stayed the same each day is that I would take a moment to think of what I could do for my future self and do it, even after a hard day. And I would wake up knowing that I had done my best and any effort—no matter how small—was a kindness to myself.

  • I’ve been doing a lot of “a treat for future me” moments lately.

  • can anyone find me that mesopotamian clay tablet telling you to marry a party girl because she'll bring you joy

  • It's from the "Maxims of Ptahhotep", purportedly written by a 96-year-old vizier to pass on his wisdom to his son:

If you marry a good-time girl

A joyful woman known to her town,

    If she is wayward,

    and revels in the moment,

    do not reject her, but instead let her enjoy;

joyfulness is what marks calm water.

  • Max was nodding along but her mind quickly drifted off. I can’t believe I kissed him. Well… kiss is a big word. It was more of a peck on the lips but I did that! … to Nathan Prescott. Wow. I mean he is good looking and the years have definitely improved on his boyish charm. Was it weird? Did I overstep? It’s not like we’re friends… We… I used to be terrified of walking past him in the hallway and now… Now I’m talking to myself inside my own head.

“… so you’re old friends then?”

“Huh?” Max came back to the present. She had no idea what Will was saying. She made an educated guess based on his past ramblings. “Me and Nathan? Yes. We’re… yes.”

Are we though? You’re such a liar, Max. But it’s not like I can explain the situation to Will… ‘Oh hey, by the way, here’s my sexy former bully who I reconnected with for a couple hours but who I seem to like enough to suddenly kiss under the mistletoe’. See. It’s simple.

Max snorted at her own thoughts.
