  • “It’s not like he was an old crush… he…” Max sighed. Who am I kidding? “I always found him good looking, true, but he was such a little shit back then. Mean spirited and insulting. Always in my way, trying to get a rise out of me, calling my work uninspired and… urgh!” She blew out an exasperated exhale.

Ella nodded thoughtfully as she handed back some more clothes.

Max got more worked up as she was remembering a particular event. “One time, he stole my portfolio and rearranged the photos and completely messed up the presentation. To be fair, it was an improvement, now that I think about it… there was something in the way he put it together that…”

    “Max.”

    “Huh?”

    “He stole your portfolio and…?”

Max came back to her story. “Yes! Right. I was so upset, I thought he was going to trash it and I’d lose all my work. Naturally, I reported it to the Principal and he got yelled at. I might also have told about his little dealings on the down low… Like I said I was upset. This was an important work! Of course, I became ‘the snitch’ for a few weeks after that.” She passed a white furry coat over to Ella. The student whom it belonged to, a petite brunette with cute curtain bangs, was listening in on the tale. “A few days later, he got into my room and vandalized my photo wall!”

“He did not!” whispered the girl.

By the end of class, Max was no less tangled up in her head when Nathan dragged a chair over and dropped into it beside her without asking. He leaned in close, close enough that she caught the faint, familiar edge of his cologne, and for a moment his attention seemed to narrow completely onto her screen.

“That one looks like it should be on a movie poster,” he said, pointing at a dramatic shot of fog hanging over the Bay on an early morning.

There was a softness in his voice she wasn’t used to hearing in class. It was less performative, almost… pleased?

Max rolled her eyes. “You’re just saying that because it’s moody.” She tried to quell the smile that threatened to cross her lips.

“Moody sells,” he replied, a small smirk tugging at his mouth. It faded just as quickly, his gaze drifting for half a second before snapping back to the image like he’d caught himself wandering.

“So,” he said eventually, “you got time tonight?”

“We could grab food,” he added, glancing at her, an almost-hesitant confidence threading through his tone.

It was exactly the kind of invitation she’d imagined and feared in equal measure, but... “I... can’t,” she slipped out. She cleared her throat. “I, uh… I already told Rachel I’d study with her.”

“Rachel?” he asked like he was trying to sound casual, but even he couldn't hide the surprise from his voice.

    “Yeah. She texted me earlier.”

“Well,” he grinned, “put in a good word for me, then.”

The image began to bloom in the developer tray, slow and ghostlike.

Nathan leaned in without thinking, breath caught in his throat as the shapes sharpened. A lighthouse blossomed from the bone white paper. A striped pillar, tall and solitary—its beam smeared into long, glowing arcs across the surface of the ocean, light dragged and stretched into a soft saucer shape by the long exposure. The water below looked unreal, shimmering with hints of the lighthouse's light, the horizon line of the sky barely there.

Nathan was hit by a sickening feeling of déjà vu, and then he realized what it was coming from: the lighthouse from Arcadia.

"That looks just like a place from back home,” he said before he could stop himself.

Max glanced over at him, then back down at the tray, her smile softening as she rocked it gently. “Does it?”

“Yeah,” he murmured. “There’s a lighthouse near where I grew up. On a cliff. Woods before you can get up to it. Kinda lonely, just like this.” He swallowed. “This is… really close.”

The resemblance was uncanny. The framing, the isolation, the way the light cut through darkness—it tugged something half-buried yet dreadfully painful up from his memories.

Salt air. Wind. Strawberry blonde hair glimmering by the cliff's edge.

Max gave him a pleased, almost knowing look. “It reminded me of a place from my childhood too,” she said wistfully, eyes still on the print.

PLSS can you drop your top 5 LIS fanfics and top 5 LIS fanartists 😋

  • Of course, thank you so much for asking! I’m gonna try my best to share currently active artists and writers <3 I’m not sure I’m gonna be able to cap myself at top 5 for either 🥹 So let’s see…

    Artists

@thaismarendaz is the GOAT Nathan artist 🥰 her drawing skills and ability to convey emotions and story through a piece of art are incredible! My fav pieces of hers are young Nathan at a party and Nathan’s family photo ❣️

@wevvix also makes some AMAZING Nathan fanart, go check them out!!!

@rewindingtime also made a few cute Caulscott works recently. Hopefully there will be more?? 🥺

@caulscott-cuddles isn’t active anymore, but they drew a tonnnnn of adorable works 💕

@minimuii doesn’t make caulscott works anymore, but they made the well-known alt-timeline polaroids series that I just love (and helped inspired EVoY!)

@all-in-my-universe made some great renders of lis including Nathan and caulscott back in the day <3

    Fics

Okay, some of my favorites are well-known fics, like…

They’re all amazing, but I thought I’d share a few lesser-known and/or currently active fics I’d also highly recommend ❣️

Ambivalence is currently in progress (almost complete!) by @weer02 and is a really unique take on if Nathan ended up saving Max from the Dark Room. It’s almost at it’s conclusion and really sweet 🥺

Unlived Consequences by @hardhuilen is a very unique and sweet take on what would’ve happened if alt!Max came back and OT!Max had killed alt!Chloe. Thought-provoking, and the caulscott doesn’t hurt 🤪

Grazing the Fire by @amoristt is a really fun and more light-hearted Nathan x Reader fic that is currently in progress. Definitely recommend, their Nathan is super in character!

Has Anybody Seen Nathan Prescott? is one of my fav explicit Nathan/reader fics ;) Big warning for canon-accurate Nathan wilin’ behavior tho lmfao

More fic recs under the cut in case you’re interested 🥴

  • The metal door flung open.

    “Max!”

Her eyes darted to the open door frame and watered when she saw his panicked face. She barely recognized him with his black coat and the snow storm blowing fiercely, concealing his silhouette. It’s the red scarf that gave him away. “Nathan,” she whispered on the brink of tears.

Max gathered all her remaining strength. She ran.

“Keep the door open!” she yelled.

Max dived inside, right into his open arms. She heard the door close shut behind her and suddenly the noiseless peace of the interior. She exhaled a breath and closed her eyes.

Warmth came back to her bones. It burned the ice away, melting the freezing sensation she was still kept under as her body was pressed against him. She was shivering, nested inside his toasty wool coat. It was like hugging a soft hot-water bag, the likes of which her grandmother would put inside her bed to keep it warm in the winter. The idea made her smile. Except this portable heater had a heartbeat, she could hear it running a bit faster than it normally would.

“Are you okay?” Nathan asked, worry coating his words.

“I am now,” she breathed, nuzzling the fabric of his suit.

    God he smells good.

  • Max was nodding along but her mind quickly drifted off. I can’t believe I kissed him. Well… kiss is a big word. It was more of a peck on the lips but I did that! … to Nathan Prescott. Wow. I mean he is good looking and the years have definitely improved on his boyish charm. Was it weird? Did I overstep? It’s not like we’re friends… We… I used to be terrified of walking past him in the hallway and now… Now I’m talking to myself inside my own head.

“… so you’re old friends then?”

“Huh?” Max came back to the present. She had no idea what Will was saying. She made an educated guess based on his past ramblings. “Me and Nathan? Yes. We’re… yes.”

Are we though? You’re such a liar, Max. But it’s not like I can explain the situation to Will… ‘Oh hey, by the way, here’s my sexy former bully who I reconnected with for a couple hours but who I seem to like enough to suddenly kiss under the mistletoe’. See. It’s simple.

Max snorted at her own thoughts.

He finally looked at her then, his eyes hollow, distant. “Yeah. Well, welcome to the family business, I guess.”

Max’s chest ached, her grip tightening on his sleeve. She wanted to pull him out of that place, drag him away from the bricks and shadows and everything they meant.

But instead she whispered, timid but fierce, “I’ll help him. I’ll help the other you, too.”

Nathan’s mouth pulled into something caught between a grimace and a smirk. He just stayed silent, refusing to meet her eyes.

Max gave him a pained look. “Thank you for... showing me. We should probably, um, go back.”

Nathan huffed, straightening his shoulders and jerking his head toward the street. “Yeah. Before someone calls the cops on us for loitering in scenic piss alley.” He started walking and Max followed, keeping pace with him though the silence pressed thick between them at first.

The sunlight outside looked too bright after the shadowed corner, but Nathan didn’t slow his stride.

“So. What the hell even makes you hopscotch between worlds?" He looked down at her, then. "You trip and fall? Or is it like—bam, nosebleed, welcome to Prescott hellscape number two?”

Max bit her lip, thinking hard. “I… I’m not sure. But… it always seems to happen when I’m overwhelmed. With you.”

Nathan shot her a sidelong look, brow arched. “With me? You saying I’m so fucking irresistible it breaks reality?”

    She flushed instantly. “That’s not—Nathan, I’m serious.”

“Yeah, yeah,” he muttered, eyes forward, but there was a weak smirk tugging at his mouth.

  • it's uppppp!

  • They went through the back door, missing again the enticing yet elusive branch of mistletoe. Nathan offered to hold the bowl but Max refused in case it spilled and ruined his impeccable suit.

“You’re really dressed up to the nine tonight,” Max emphasized.

Nathan feigned modesty. “This old thing?”

“Please, I bet it’s a designer piece that costs more than my loft.”

Nathan chuckled, “Depends on the size of that loft.”

“Hardy har har, you’re so funny…” Max deadpanned. “I still can tell you didn’t dress up like this for handing out prizes. It’s not the Oscars. Were you expected somewhere else?”

He shot her a sidelong glance. “You’re sharp. Have you thought about a career as a Sherlock Holmes knock off? You’d do wonders.”

Max couldn’t flip him the finger with the punch bowl in arms so she went for sticking out her tongue at him. Max immediately felt quite childish but the way Nathan was playing off of her steered that part of her to the fore front. Although, it was pretty fun to get in touch with her inner child for Christmas. It felt refreshing when her thoughts had all been melancholic and somber lately. She grinned.

Her heart skips a beat when she catches sight of him – for a split second, her excitement almost feels like fear, but she shakes it off. She must just be nervous because of what happened at the last party. He is wearing a dark red sweater over a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up; he looks good in red. His dark jeans are just about the same shade as her skirt, and Max blushes as she realizes they are practically matching.

It's finished! Here is the promised Caulscott, and it's nauseatingly fluffy.

Warren launched right into the problem set, his tone chipper and patient in that I’m used to dealing with idiots but I’m still gonna smile through it way. He scribbled equations across the whiteboard, talking about refraction indices, angular deviation, and wave interference like any of it made sense. The guy couldn’t have been more than five, maybe six years older than them, but he acted like some ancient physics sage looking down from Olympus on the two idiot undergrads.

What made it all worse was Hayden, who kept asking the same questions — in slightly different wording — like he was stuck in some weed-induced feedback loop.

“So, wait,” Hayden said for the third time, leaning forward with his pen dangling between his fingers, “if light bends when it enters water, does that mean it’s technically, like, slower underwater?”

Warren pinched the bridge of his nose but still smiled. “Yeah, that’s… that’s literally the whole point of refraction. The speed of light changes depending on the medium, but—”

“Right, right, yeah,” Hayden cut in, nodding slowly. “But then, like… why?”

Nathan watched Warren’s polite expression crack for just half a second. The guy looked like he wanted to bang his head against the board. He sighed through his nose, rubbing his temple. “Because— okay, look, remember what I just told you? Remember how I said that the refractive index of the medium determines the phase velocity—"

To hell with the buddy-buddy bullshit. “Jesus Christ, man, you don’t have to talk to him like that,” Nathan snapped.
