Update: Miss Caulfield and Other Bad Ideas, Chapter 8

The image began to bloom in the developer tray, slow and ghostlike.

Nathan leaned in without thinking, breath caught in his throat as the shapes sharpened. A lighthouse blossomed from the bone white paper. A striped pillar, tall and solitary—its beam smeared into long, glowing arcs across the surface of the ocean, light dragged and stretched into a soft saucer shape by the long exposure. The water below looked unreal, shimmering with hints of the lighthouse's light, the horizon line of the sky barely there.

Nathan was hit by a sickening feeling of déjà vu, and then he realized what it was coming from: the lighthouse from Arcadia.

"That looks just like a place from back home,” he said before he could stop himself.

Max glanced over at him, then back down at the tray, her smile softening as she rocked it gently. “Does it?”

“Yeah,” he murmured. “There’s a lighthouse near where I grew up. On a cliff. Woods before you can get up to it. Kinda lonely, just like this.” He swallowed. “This is… really close.”

The resemblance was uncanny. The framing, the isolation, the way the light cut through darkness—it tugged something half-buried yet dreadfully painful up from his memories.

Salt air. Wind. Strawberry blonde hair glimmering by the cliff's edge.

Max gave him a pleased, almost knowing look. “It reminded me of a place from my childhood too,” she said wistfully, eyes still on the print.

rewatching some jancy scenes in an edit and i just realized in s1, after they cut their hands to bait the demogorgon, they bandage up their hands, right? but nancy's bandage is cleaner and more secure, while jonathan's is just a single, one-way wrap around his knuckles.

the wrap around nancy's hand is the perfect example of a figure of 8 bandaging—but the one around jonathan's, bless nancy's soul, could possibly be too tight or too limiting for the patient (especially since she put the lock in the web space between his index finger and thumb). there's a decent chance jonathan's just saying that no, it's not that tight to not make nancy feel guilty.

anyways MY POINT IS: this means jonathan knows first aid—but nancy doesn't. prime example of show, not tell.

not that it's a bad thing to not know first aid, of course, but regardless this is a neat, subtle detail i've just now noticed.

i don't know why this devastates me so much. but if we think about it in the context of the byers...

So many ppl have said that what the Elementary version of Holmes gets right is that perfect ratio of low asshole energy to high bitchy energy, and while I hear that and totally agree I think what they Really got right is that Holmes is totally and certifiably an absolute fucking freak. He’s a complete weirdo. He loves kinky sex. He has all his bizarre little hobbies. He gets deep joy from these things. And he is not at all ashamed of any of this, he’s actually quite proud of it all and willing to share it with anyone, out of a true love for his passions. He doesn’t feel confined by convention or expectations at all, he just wants to be vibing with his weird little projects and solve some weird little crimes and That Is How Sherlock Holmes Should Be.

and! And he actually fucking cares about people and wants to help! Not just as an outlet or way to show off his intellect! He may frequently be annoyed by these emotions but Elementary Sherlock wants to do good more than any other Sherlock and he is. hands down. Best Sherlock.
