It had been three months since the gate to the Upside Down closed for the last time. Three months since Joyce chopped Vecna’s head off his body. Three months since you lost the only other girl you could call your “sister”.

Hawkins was far from restored, but the community’s can-do attitude helped townsfolk to persevere one last time. The military had almost completely pulled out of the town, and Hawkins Lab had been permanently sealed. With the military gone, the quarantine was lifted after one final mandatory check-up. Folks were free to come and go as they pleased once more. Even the giant metal band-aid had been hauled off to the Indianapolis junk yard.

To say the past year and a half had been difficult would be the understatement of the century. Between being quarantined in Hawkins with no end in sight, the numerous crawls to scout Vecna, and many unsaid things in the air, everything was constantly tense. Living so close to the end of the world kept everyone on edge. The military’s arrival had cut short any period of mourning for everyone. It wasn’t just one person in particular; everyone in the party was suffering through their own shitty circumstances. And yet, the hardest task of all was playing middleman in the battles of constant bickering and miscommunication. 

With another technical issue with the tower’s frequency, Steve immediately left you alone to search for the manual in the green room by yourself. He had a habit of asking others to tell him how to fix his problems, which was equally endearing and frustrating. From the other room, you heard Steve slam the antenna back into the walkie. 

Your head poked around from the doorway with an inquisitive glance. Steve immediately spotted you, and you could tell from his posture that he was aggrieved. It was becoming more difficult to ignore the growing rift between Steve and your brother with each passing day.

Falling in love was never easy. Falling in love at the end of the world was even harder. It was supposed to be easier to keep things quiet and steal away secret moments in the dark. Steve was used to the dark — how to feel in it, how to cope with it, how to move on with the next girl. Yet being in the dark with you warmed his skin deeper than the hands of another ever did. Without a touch, you left him flustered and numbed the concerns that rattled his brain. He knew the push and pull of seduction, greedily taking from each other’s bodies. But you didn’t ever touch him like that, and he never pressed you about the lack of physicality in your hushed relationship.

From the unobservant eye, it would seem you and Steve were simply friends, attempting to survive the end of the world. He never tried to “put the moves” on you, as Robin had watched him do so many times before. The Party had wondered once or twice why Steve hadn’t simply pursued you or Robin among his endless flings. No one would suspect that below the surface, you both shared something that went much deeper than your physical bodies. And no one noticed that Steve had started to stop seeking the things that he maybe never truly wanted; the things that had just been easier to take than fight for or beg for more.

And you hadn’t given yourself to him. Not yet. But neither of you needed the physically tangible thing to be fulfilled. You needed words: the scribbled way he wrote your name, how you whispered to him, and the songs he’d broadcast in an unspoken offering to you. You needed a look, or as Robin would put it, the knowing glance. Neither of you needed the body because you had the heart. Rather than peeling off layers of clothes, you unraveled your anxieties for him, and he shed his years of silent trauma to you. What blossomed between you and Steve surpassed lustful desires or childhood infatuation. You were bound together by knowledge, trauma, grief, and something greater than the word love could convey.

It was a casual night out in the van. Both Steve and you had been tasked with driving around the perimeter of the MAC-Z at least once a week in an attempt to catch any outgoing radio transmissions. The task was a feeble hope of finding out whether the military knew anything more about Vecna’s whereabouts or El’s presence. It had been a rather uneventful, quiet time where Steve made the most noise by chewing on a Bopper and softly humming whatever radio hit Robin premiered this morning. 

That was until a surge of energy rushed through the van. You attempted to find the power source to prevent the surge as Dustin had instructed before, but it was too late. 

“Again? This is the third time, like, this month?” You removed the headset. You had been perched in the back seat, scanning for a frequency that Dustin’s radio had suddenly started picking up. That was until the van began to sputter and came to a rolling stop.

Steve’s forehead came to rest on the steering wheel as he released a heavy sigh, “Jesus Christ.”

no spoilers! just thoughts about the station and the party!

→ after getting fired from family video for being no-shows (to be fair, neither of them realized that Keith would still schedule them after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake), Robin and Steve apply to WSQK. Vickie casually mentioned how she listened to the station every morning and how sad she was going to be with the current host leaving Hawkins. luckily, the interview process was a short and sweet exchanging of keys.

→ when Nancy, Robin, and Jonathan graduated in the spring of ‘86, they hosted a private graduation party at wsqk so the party could safely celebrate with them.

→ Robin and Steve agreed that the station would be a no romance zone. that was until robin brought Vickie for a “private tour”. Steve, however, religiously holds up his end of the bargain because he knows the station is a safe space for Robin and Vickie to be themselves.

→ speaking of guests, both Steve and Robin both have bedrooms at the station because “it’s easier to sleep over for late night broadcasts and crawls.” but what they don’t tell the party is that it’s easier for Steve to live at the station than return to the house that his parents fled Hawkins before the quarantine started. Robin tries to evenly split her time between staying at home and the station because she hates for Steve to be alone.

→ Robin has made specialized DJ names for all the kids in the party and will use them instead of their real names when radioing because she thinks it’s funny.

→ Steve brought the basketball hoop from the Harrington house to the station so that he could continue to coach and mentor Lucas. But Steve also uses it himself when the night gets late, and the memories and regrets gnaw at the back of his mind.

→ Jonathan built a small listening booth in the station for the party to seek solace in whenever days are especially hard. And everyone has full access to the station’s catalog. Dustin will come in to have a private Metallica listening session. Murray likes to use it between supply runs. Erica borrowed it for a private listening party. Even Joyce has sought the quiet comfort of the listening booth, even if she doesn’t understand how to start the tracks.

→ Lucas once convinced Robin to loop Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill to broadcast to Max one night. However, an hour in and numerous called-in complaints, they had to move on to a different track. So now, the party writes “call-in messages” to Mad Max for Robin to deliver through the radio when Lucas or someone else can’t visit her at the hospital.

“Hey, Hey Hawkins,” Steve’s charismatic voice sounds through the radio where you’re perched at the hospital. You volunteered to spend the evening watching over Max while Lucas spent quality time with the boys.

You smile at he radio as the broadcast continues. Steve’s low voice croons over the airwaves with a touch of exhaustion, “Welcome back to another late-night hour with Stevie-boy. Rockin’ Robin will be back for the early bird, but right now, yours truly is spinning the tunes.”

His terrible puns make you giggle at his antics. Oh, Steve - ever the charmer.

“I know most of the lovebirds have settled into their nest for the night,” He softly continues, “But my lovebird, if you’re listening tonight, just know that this next song is just for you…”

As the melody begins to play through the radio, you turn the volume knob up a little bit for you and Max to enjoy together.
