Noteshey it’s ok if you lost your ai virginity back when you were uneducated. a lot of posts go like “reblog if you have never ever used generative ai and never ever will!!!” but it’s ok if you have used gen ai before and it’s even ok if you used to think it was cool, back before you understood what it really was and how it worked, either because no one had taught you about it and you discovered it on your own or because the only education you had received about it was from the tech bros. you’re not a burger with a bite out of it for having used ai. ok
It is 100 percent okay to stop using it today and join the “boo AI” club.
This isn’t a purity thing. This is a “everyone stand with us against destroying the environment and giving asthma to poor people” thing.
Did you know that when one community says no to an AI data center, they specifically search out communities with fewer resources? Communities that can’t defend themselves? And the pollution 100 percent affects their health and wellbeing, in addition to burning through our already scarce drinking water.
You can stop using character.ai today. You can say “I listened to the facts and stopped.” And another thing: don’t you think it’s a bit more impactful to have used it, stopped, and then you’re in a position to say how little it helped? How doing things for yourself improved your life?

okay nah but this is what I’ve been saying. everyone arguing over how to regulate AI and what it means for copyright and how do we account for AI without hurting creative industries and and and
Require it to be labeled. that’s it. require every instance of AI output to be clearly and obviously labeled that it is AI. Every decision made with AI has to be disclosed in plain phrasing, every email, every paper, every image and video must be clearly and obviously watermarked. Make removing the label/identifier a procecutable offence.
Now everyone who doesn’t want it can avoid it. Now everyone using it with intent as a bad actor has to jump through extra hoops (and is on the hook for additional charges when caught). Now every single person who has had their insurance claim or credit application or resume rejected or denied because of AI can point to it and demand a reconsideration. Make. Every. Single. Instance. Of AI use mandated to be legally disclosed. That’s it!

NotesI am so damn pleased with the Sedgwick County Zoo media team, y’all. They just dropped a stellar blog piece on why GenAI slop videos of animals are such a problem - and how to identify them!
This is the first time I’ve ever seen a zoo or aquarium in the United States speak up broadly about AI. (The only times I can think of any comment at all has maybe individual instances when a deepfake of “their” animal escaping is circulating.) And they did a great job with this piece! It’s succinct, easy to read, and written in a way that doesn’t shame people for engaging with AI content before they knew better.
I think this is exactly the type of resource needed for sending to that family member or friend we all have - the one who isn’t aware of the slop issue and constantly sends you clearly fake videos because they’re “so cute.”
I’d love to have Sedgwick get some public positive reinforcement for taking this stance. If you’re so inclined, a comment on their FB post would be great as it’s likely they’re going to get shit for this from sloppers & co. We really do need animal organizations to stand up for accurate, real animal content and this is a great first step in that direction.
