*gathers all of the people in the world who write the number 7 with a little dash in the center of it so I can study them like little critters and find out what makes them do that*
There’s actually a lot of history regarding the development writing systems and why there are different visual representations of numerals,
but the short answer is: it’s regional, and you probably picked up how to make your numbers look based on your parents or your primary school teachers
I do it out of spite because in grade school a kids detective story identified the culprit by saying NO American wrote their sevens with a line and I thought that was super flimsy evidence and it made me so mad I started putting a line through my sevens so the fictional detective would be wrong and then kept doing it for several decades since.
I do feel one can’t underestimate the “elementary school child taught themselves how to do this Out Of Spite” crowd
“the average income in <X> is <Y> of <currency>” cool, what’s the median
Average isn’t useful here. however, after a little bit of research, apparently the median income in the US is $24,327, which means the reality is actually much worse than this meme makes it seem. yay!
According to time magazine, median annual rent is $13,896, which means rent alone is 57% Of the median annual income, awesome!
One of the things you’ll learn in statistics is that while both average and median have their places, averages are EXTREMELY easily jerked around by extreme outliers, so if someone uses the average on a dataset that likely has some extreme outliers (like income, which would have a handful of people who make 9 digits per year) then you gotta assume they’re lying to you.
isn’t it so crazy that 51 is divisible by 17. because 51 is such an ugly number that based on vibes alone i would 100% think it’s prime 😭😭 like who in the world would even WANT to divide that shit? 17 and 3 i fucking guess…… 🤷
Y’ever read something and have understanding that has eluded you interminably suddenly stop, curl up, and snuggle neatly into a fold in your brain because a new way way opened to it?
I’ve seen this passed around a few times, and I have one thing to say:
It’s online. The book was carefully and wonderfully recreated online by hand. You can find it here. The entire book is this easy.
2025 is a good number, it’s a quarter of the way through the 20 hundreds and it’s got that nice set of 2s separated by only a 0. not bad. whatever happens this year at least it’ll be happening during a good number 😌
and IT’S A SQUARE. IT’S 45 SQUARED. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS IN 1936 (44 squared) AND IT WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN UNTIL 2116 (46 squared)
It’s not just any square, it’s the square of a triangle number - 45 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9. (Which is also the sum of all the squares in a Sudoku grid, an inescapable tool if you like to do more mathematically intense sudokus.)
The squares of triangle numbers, also known as Nicomachus numbers, have a very interesting identity - the square of the sum is equal to the sum of the cubes! So we have
The previous Nicomachus year was 1296, and the next is 3025 - and given that the Gregorian calendar wasn’t in use until the 16th century, I’m not holding my breath for a second Gregorian Nicomachus year to happen at all.
I worked out what percentage of the population each individual person makes up, and I worked out how many asexuals there are… but Facebook didn’t appreciate my mathematical prowess, so I’m sharing it here too.
I’m gonna add a few numbers to this (although I did not come up with them, I only did a very quick Google).
The current population of the United Kingdom is estimated to be around 64.31 million people.
The current population of Canada is estimated to be around 35.67 million people.
The current population of Australia is estimated to be around 23.13 million people.
1% of the global population doesn’t matter? Not only are you saying the entire population of the United Kingdom doesn’t matter, but you’re also saying that the COMBINED POPULATION OF CANADA AND AUSTRALIA (58.8 million) doesn’t matter.
And let’s be honest. The current population of the United States is estimated to be around 318.86 million people. That means that (according to Google) 1% of the American population alone is 3,188,600 people. Over three million people in the United States alone.
