a talking point i often see when defending the consumption of dark content is that it’s a coping mechanism for those with trauma which is very valid and true but i also want to make this abundantly clear: you can like dark content for no reason. you can enjoy fucked up shit in fiction because it’s enjoyable and entertaining. trauma is not required as a ticket for entry. enjoy your dark content bc it’s fun and sexy and don’t let anyone take that away from you
sometimes the reason is this
reblog if you love to see that shit that was fucking crazy
In fact, if you see someone enjoying darker art/fiction/kink/etc. and assume that their tastes must be pathological, that’s not actually very supportive at all. “This means something is wrong with you, and I’m glad you’re dealing with it in a healthy way” is only slightly better than “this means something is wrong with you, and you’re a bad person for dealing with it in this way”, it’s still rooted in “there is something wrong with you”.
Most people who like dark fiction/art like it because it’s interesting or cool or hot or fun or says something meaningful about the world. It isn’t pathological, it’s not a response to something horrific. It’s meaningful and fun because it is.
And for the few who do like dark fiction as a means of dealing with trauma, they can only have their privacy and dignity if the rest of us are assumed to be enjoying things we like because it’s fun.
Picking people you think are traumatized out of a crowd and going “this one’s screwed up” is not a very nice thing to do.
People have just straight up forgotten that a “safe scare” doesn’t actually hurt you 😭
