On "Dreams and Illusions," Mathias makes expert use of tones and textures to paint visceral sonic images of life's torments. Not dark for darkness' sake, the songs lead to a cathartic release. There is depth and variety here, and the music across the entire album is emotional, spooky, and powerful. Highly recommended.
