Progress looks awkward during the process of transition. The coming out scene was not ideal or realistic. but why are we suddenly starting care for realism in a show about supernatural horrors, telekinetic powers, and evil wizard trying to destroy the world and remake it?
No matter the poor writing choices, the show creators including the coming out scene for Will, did not make the homophobic audience happy. Rather that scene further alienated those homophobic audience from enjoying the show. They are still making choices that the conservative conformists does not like to see.
Also, we have to remember that in Will’s coming out scene, everyone was accepting and reassuring him they will always love him and never let them drift apart. It was a positive and pretty sweet sentiment. Sure, the audience included people who really didn’t need to be there. But they were also people who are supporting and accepting Will, they did not react in a negative manner. They were there to show even if they aren’t close friends or family, they still do not see Will as anything less or different just for being gay.
It is a nerve-wracking experience to come out to people, especially in real life. This scene is not how most queer people would like to come out and share a vulnerable part of themselves. But remember, the show is at least trying. If we let the media and corporations get the impression that queer stories are not well received, we will be setting ourselves further away from the goal of having meaningful representations on screen.
So I’m urging you guys to pause for a minute and watch the episodes as a part of the show as a whole and not just the Vol2, and also to wait a few more days, to see how they tie up the loose threads in the finale.
