Delft continues its exploration of the true US underground with a propulsive, acid-inflected EP from Scotia. A beloved figure on the grassroots rave scene, Scotia hails from Albany, NY and has since embedded herself in the psychedelic consciousness with rapturously received sets at parties including The Bunker, I Love Acid, Wrecked and Ever Afters Campout, reverent to dance music’s past, while forging a more inclusive future.
Increasingly recognised for her unapologetic and occasionally unsettling “transsexual acid music”, Scotia refines this notorious 303 control throughout ‘Human Host’. The title track summons warehouse hypnosis even before the compelling, classic acid squelch arrives, slowly building into a conspiratorial arrangement of eerie pads and whispering voices, making good on the shadowy sci-fi of the EP’s title.
In contrast, ‘Big City’ is a true techno roller, applying serious pressure to turbulent oscillations, while the looser ‘Like This’ sees Scotia give her machines a cathartically funky workout. Finally, ‘Human Host (LA-4A Remix)’ finds the Delft founder throwing the weight of his own studio behind Scotia’s original production, applying his signature cascading percussion before unleashing a ripping bassline defined with its own kind of chaos.
