Internet Oldhead and General Crank reliving my youth by liveblogging EVERY SINGLE DIGIMON ANIME SERIES EVER.
At least, that's how it started. Now I'm watching these for the first time ever while fully in my 30s. Yeah, we're way past "nostalgia" as a hook here. (She/her)
Seeing these guys together makes me think of the 02 episode Call of Dagomon, and how thankful I am that Chiaki Konaka never fell off the deep end, buying into alt-right conspiracy nonsense about cancel culture destroying the internet, and never wrote a Tamers stage play on the topic in 2021.
Yup, I sure am glad all of that didn't happen, and that the last on-record official Tamers content was the 2018 audio drama that ends on a heart-wrenching-in-all-the-best-ways cliffhanger. Sometimes it's better for stories to be left to personal and subjective interpretation, feel me?
Based solely on this episode, I’m placing Akari slightly down from Sora toward Ruki. Doting mother at heart, but also not afraid to yell and bonk some heads around.
Just curious, do you ship Ruki Makino with anyone? I don’t personally, at least from Tamers (as I’ve said before, I like the idea of her with either Hikari or Izumi), but if I had to choose I’d maybe have her with either Takato, Juri, or Kenta (though I prefer Takato and Juri with each other and Kenta with Hirokazu).
Hnm, admitedly I’m not the most invested in anything Tamers-related that isn’t the casual meta references; so I don’t ship anything in this universe. I’m really sorry if this is disappointing.
Like, even though they have teased us with both subtle Ruki x Takato (the -chan thing right in the beginning of the series) and Ruki x Ryou (the rivalry and blushing thing), I can’t say any of it has grasped my interest.
Ruki has strong wlw vibes to me, I don’t know why - so I actually may have to take back Ruki with both Takato and Kenta. I think I just prefer her with one of them over Ryo lol.
Ruki is just too darn cool; I wouldn’t be surprised she eventually married some edgy guy or chick who is more like her in terms of personality; someome who grows up to become a chill person with badass interests like motocross and harvey davidsons and listens to heavy metal and has no issues bluntly telling you whatever is on their mind. xD

Ruki is hella gay and her first love was Renamon. @digijosify has receipts from the show.
So if you watch Tamers with a mind open to the possibility of Ruki being in love with Renamon, you’ll notice a substantial amount of subtext speaking to exactly that, from little things like the way they hold each other in their arms, to less subtle things like the way Ruki gives Renamon an energy drink in a textbook-tsundere manner. Frankly, by the end of the series it becomes pretty difficult to ignore.
Beyond those subtextual hints, however, there are other things to look to as well. In the Best Tamers: Makino Ruki & Renamon album, Renamon sings about how everything she does is for Ruki’s sake, evoking more than a few Wesley/Princess Buttercup vibes. They also share a duet in which they refer to each other as their “Last Piece”, essentially declaring that they complete each other in no uncertain terms. And then there’s the Drama CDs, and…listen, I have LOTS to say about the Drama CDs but. Just, go find a translated script. Just do it.
Of course, if in-canon subtext and outside-canon content aren’t enough to convince you, there was also that time that Ruki deadass told Renamon she loved her.
Alright, bear with me, this one takes some explainin’.
In the late 19th century there lived the popular and influential Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki, whose works are still referenced in modern Japanese literature to this day. Not satisfied with merely writing his own novels, and being a passionate scholar of British literature, he was also responsible for adapting many works of Western literature for Japanese audiences. Now, Soseki lived in the Meiji period, which was reputedly on par with the Victorian era in terms of cultural consensus regarding sexuality and sensuality; which is to say, “repressed as all hell”. So Soseki is translating all these English novels and he notes that British authors say “I love you” way too freely to be appropriate for a Japanese readership. So he takes it upon himself to translate the phrase “I love you” to “tsuki ga kirei”, which literally means “the moon is beautiful”. Soseki thinks that phrasing the idea in such an indirect way still conveys the necessary emotion to the reader without having to be so direct and impolite about it, perfectly befitting literature of the Meiji period. And as Soseki’s adaptations become more popular, saying “the moon is beautiful” to mean “I love you” catches on in popular Japanese parlance.
Which brings me to this scene from Episode 18:
Boom.
“well that’s a stretch” you might think, but hear me out: Translation between Japanese and English is not exactly a precise science. Certain linguistic conventions simply don’t carry over from one language to the other. A relevant example is the use of personal pronouns “you” and “I”; in conversational Japanese, it’s uncommon for either to be used unless absolutely necessary, as generally speaking the subject and/or object of the sentence is understood through context to be either the speaker or the person being spoken to. And this screenshot comes from an unofficial fansub, people who might be forgiven for not being familiar with classical Japanese literary idioms, and thus misinterpreting the meaning behind the lack of personal pronouns in a sentence that includes “the moon” and “beautiful”.
PLUS, it fits Ruki’s characterization to a T. In the original, she’s written to be significantly more emotionally mature than the other kids on the team, reflected in part by her more adult speech patterns and vocabulary. This is the real reason she doesn’t like being called “Ruki-chan” by Takato (or Juri, for that matter): she’s uncomfortable with people being overly direct or familiar with her, and bristles at it. Thus, it makes perfect sense that she’d invoke an antiquated, emotionally indirect phrase to express her affections for Renamon.
In conclusion, Ruki is a furry and a lesbian, Renaruki is canon, I will die on this hill, happy Pride, and thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Okay, Digimon popularity poll FOR SCIENCE! Rank your favorite Digimon seasons in order, best to worst, however you want to define that, it’s your opinion! Listing a tie will mean the next item on the list gets less points. Not listing a season will not effect its score. Here are the 9 seasons in chronological order: Adventure, Zero Two, Tamers, Frontier, Savers, Xros Wars, Hunters, Tri, Appmon. GO!
If we can signal boost this enough to get a lot of respondants, we’ll actually have useful information!
!!!! People figuring out what makes Masaru tick by noticing all the subtle things about him and realising how interesting of a character he is!
Oh man I’m so pumped for this liveblog, and especially your character analysis post for him at the end.
(It is already possible to figure out the reason behind his obsession with manliness at this point, by the way. Not sure if you have or not, but just throwing that out there.)
Well, it’s not exactly rocket science. His father is missing, leaving him as the sole male presence of his household, where he’s outnumbered by his mother and his sister. Sounds reasonable to me that he’d feel a desire to compensate. With that said, I’m interested to see where the narrative goes with this, and where it goes with the other characters as well. As I recall, next episode is a pretty good Tohma piece. Looking forward to it!
Ruki is hands down my favorite character. I’ll just start by saying that.
Do you ever have one of those characters where the very first time you see them, you just instantly know “That one. That one’s my favorite” and sure enough, you are proven absolutely right? Ruki was one of those for me. The first time I saw this character in a Digimon Tamers Promo image, I just knew I was going to like this character. I wish I could go talk to my past self and ask her why she felt such a strong affinity so quickly, but alas, those mysteries are lost in time.
In short, I love this character. Let’s talk about her.
We were talking before about how Sora and Ruki have similarities in their issues and relationships with their mother. I wanted to add that I’ve always felt Ruki’s disconnect from her mother, and how she eventually embraces her motherly nature was written far better than how the same conflicts were written for Sora.
I felt very connected to Ruki, I felt her struggles and cared about what happened to her. I know they aren’t the same characters and Ruki had other issues going on (which make her similar to Yamato). However, I think it’s worth mentioning that seeing the exact same issues play out in Sora’s arc had no impact on me at all and left me feeling very dissatisfied with the character.
I know you love Sora and that you don’t feel the same way but I kinda wanted to get this off my chest. I feel like Ruki was Sora done properly…
One of several aspects of Ruki’s character that I had originally wanted to touch upon in this post was the resolution of her conflict with her mother, but I ultimately decided to save that for a separate post about all of the Tamers collectively and their relationships with their families.
Suffice it to say for now that I almost wholly agree with you. Sora’s mother and Ruki’s mother are very very different characters and the way their conflicts with their daughters manifests ends up taking on different forms as a result. While both want for their daughters to follow in their own highly successful and glamorous (in their own way) careers, their motivations for doing so are completely different. One does what she does out of a strong sense of familial obligation, duty, and tradition, while the other does what she does because she thinks it’s really fun and wants to share that fun with this younger person whom she regards as a sibling. It may be that I’m nitpicking, but it does alter the dynamic quite a bit.
All of that said, you’re absolutely right that Ruki gets some semblance of resolution that involves an actual conversation with her mother, rather than Sora’s “everything was better after that Digimon thing happened”, and it’s immensely more satisfying as a result.

I said I was going to update this listing as I went on, and I meant it!
So, of the series covered so far…
Tamers
Adventure
Zero Two

No surprises here, Tamers is still the champion of my heart, owing in no small part to its inclusion of my all-time favorite character. Will Frontier hold its marginal lead over Zero Two? We’ll find out together!
Edit: And because I did one of these for Savers, here’s one for Tamers:
Pros:
Everything about Ruki Makino and Renamon and their relationship and just wow
The D-Reaper is the best villain in the whole franchise
All the primary cast members get lots of development, sticking with the larger themes about family
Best EN Theme (Days - Aijou To Nichijou)
Digimon are treated as autonomous characters, not just extensions of their partners’ personalities
Renaruki is canon
Mature look into PTSD through Juri’s arc
Cons:
Slow first arc, takes a while to build up steam
Juri gets damseled for the final arc. While interesting things come of this, I feel that more could have been done.
There’s a lot of conflicting information out there and in the end it all comes down to a person’s interpretation of the facts as they’re presented.
While it’s true that Renamon, at one point, explicitly states that Digimon have no gender, there’s no denying that there’s quite a bit of gender coding in many of the Digimon’s character designs. You can’t tell me that, when finalizing Ladydevimon’s look, the artist responsible looked at their drawing and said “Yep, that right there is a being that doesn’t have a gender.” Hell, even in the NAME Ladydevimon there’s gender-coding baked right in.
But then you have Digimon whose designs are far more…shall we say, ambivalent. Agumon, for instance, doesn’t really have any gendered signifiers in his design, and so it’s totally conceivable to me that there could be Agumon out there that go by “she” and don’t look much different from the Agumon we know.
So my personal interpretation is that Digimon have gender expression, and also that some or many of them exist totally outside the male/female dichotomy. In a way, they’re ahead of humans in regards to accepting of such expressions. :p
Digimon have genders - they can mentally identify themselves as guys or as girls, but this doesn’t map to their physical appearance, even when they’re explicitly female-coded or male-coded.
Example:
One of the World games has an Ophanimon dude, and that one wasn’t modded by his gender into not having the boobs and bared mid-riff.
The Savers: Another Mission game has a Lilithmon dude who evolved from a Renamon dude, both looking normal for the species.
What they don’t have is - is sexual-reproduction anatomy. This is what Renamon means (”by nature, Digimon isn’t divided by gender”) in Tamers, and the Story games include a statement to the same effect.
The Xros Wars series allowing for sexual reproduction and nuclear families is just part of it being wildly different from the rest of the franchise as it is in other ways like the Digital World preceding earth or Digivolution being aging. The Dark Ocean episode of 02 includes the idea as part of the Lovecraft reference, not because it’s something Digimon are automatically capable of there.
I've actually seen another video series where the relationship between the tamers and their partners, where takato and guilomon is like a boy and his dog, terriermon and Henry are brothers and as weird as this sounds, rika and renamon are very much like lovers. Do you think this explanation holds up?
Um, yes?? Like 100% absolutely??? Like I need to see this video series right the hell now???? Only I probably shouldn’t, given that I already agree with the premise and I don’t want it to color my own commentary of their relationships too much.
Seriously, I need to put this out there, when I started this blog back in May, the idea of shipping Ruki with Renamon hadn’t even crossed my mind. Now I’m 12 episodes in my liveblogging of the series and I’m like two steps away from full-blown Renaruki TRASH. I assure you, I’m as surprised as any of you.
I’m going to assume that most people have seen this by now, and if you haven’t, well, here it is. I will be addressing this video very specifically at some point, but not now. For now, just keep it in your brain pocket for later.
