Inktober 2025 — Day 8 — Reckless

When I tried thinking of a reckless character that I personally knew of, the first one who came to mind was Izuku Midoriya. After all it’s practically a running gag how many of his own bones he has broken. But when I gave it more thought, he wasn’t entirely reckless throughout MHA. Yes, he’d rush into danger and come up with risky plans, but he would at least do his best to plan and only took extreme risks because the situation called for it. He was always aware of his environment, and had ideas that, while dangerous, are ones he thought through thoroughly (say that five times fast). He took risks, but was never reckless.

In contrast to Izuku, Galo Thymos is definitely more reckless. His whole thing is rushing into life threatening situations with very little planning. He’s not an idiot, he knows how dangerous fires are and he’s clearly done his training, but the amount of times he’s gotten himself into trouble or ran into a very dangerous scenario is probably concerning for this Burning Rescue Team. Thankfully he’s got luck on his side, and he was definitely a more fitting character for the prompt. I wanted to draw Galo rushing into fire, likely to save someone’s life. I wanted the flames (likely Burnish flames) to sort of move around him almost like they’re surrounding him but not quite attacking him. I do kind of want to color this in another time though that’s mostly because Promare is a visually stunning movie with really nice color schemes, especially with the Burnish.

(Apologies for the sudden absence. Something in life came up that I had to prioritize which led me to having less time in the afternoon to draw, plus I was unable to stay up late since getting up early in the morning became much more important.)

Inktober 2024 — Day 18 — Drive

Okay, so you know that meme where you draw three comfort characters in a car all looking grumpy and the reference has Goofy driving, Patrick Star in the passenger seat, and Fluttershy in the back? Well that’s what inspired this! I finally got a chance to try it myself.

I actually drew four characters: Galo Thymos, Izuku Midoriya, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Smokescreen (specifically from Transformers Prime). These four have been my go to comfort characters for a while. Shadow in particular has been my favorite for as long as I can remember! My friend actually suggested I draw Smokescreen’s expression up in the corner to make sure it’s conveyed that he is the car they’re driving and that was the right call! (On a side note, I know technically Smokescreen doesn’t have a back seat in TFP since he’s a race car, but I’m giving him one this time)

The story behind the drawing itself is that Izuku once again has broken his hand and needed someone to pick him up. Galo and Smokescreen go to pick him up while Shadow just hangs out in the back. I am really happy with how I was able to convey everyone’s emotions and current states. It was also just a fun excuse to draw some of my favorite characters.

Inktober 2024 — Day 12 — Remote

And here’s another Matoi Siblings drawing already. Immediately when I thought of “Remote”, it made me think of siblings fighting over a tv remote, and I wanted to draw Galo and Ryuko as siblings again so I thought why not.

I really wanted the pose to be more action based rather than just them just pushing each other or holding the remote out of reach. I know for a fact that Ryuko and Galo wouldn’t be afraid of rough housing. Eventually I was able to figure out a pose that felt like a good balance of anime exaggeration and physically believable. Though let’s be honest, things being “believable” is not really a concern with these two.

Inktober 2024 — Day 11 — Snacks

Here’s another crossover of mine that I really love! I’m sure I’ve already gone on and on about how much I love Promare, and recently I’ve been watching Kill La Kill. Thus, this idea came to be: The Matoi Siblings.

(Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen either Promare or Kill La Kill!)

To make a long story short: After Galo loses his parents in the house fire when he was a kid (because I’m like 99% sure that’s what happened even though they never explicitly said it in the movie) he is taken in by Isshin Matoi who was an old friend of Galo’s parents. Galo becomes the adoptive older brother to Ryuko Matoi, and while the two are vastly different, they get along much more than people expect. Years later when Isshin dies, Galo takes Ryuko in for a year or two until she enters Honnōji Academy and heads out on her own (the timeline’s a bit skewed, but not too different).

I imagine that, while Galo and Ryuko are very different characters, they’d be good siblings and care about one another. They have a fair amount of similarities: They’re both brash and a bit hot headed, very loud and tend to be dramatic (especially during action scenes), but they also care deeply about those they hold dear, have unwavering determination and drive, and they push themselves to be stronger and to fight for what they believe in. It’s just that while Galo pushes himself to saves lives from fires, Ryuko’s on a mission for vengeance. This is for sure not the last time I’ll be doing a drawing based on these two, so keep your eyes peeled.

Inktober 2023 — Day 31 — Fire

So… Yeah, I am extremely late with this. Let me try to explain myself. On the last day of Inktober, on Halloween night, I got hit hard with COVID. My body ached, I started shivering, it was bad. And my first time getting COVID as well. I wasn’t able to do anything but rest for the next week or so. Unfortunately, after that week, I had lost all motivation to finished the last day of Inktober. I struggle a lot with that sort of thing. One way I combat this is to have strict set deadlines, which is why I was able to keep up with Inktober so far. So since I no longer had a set deadline, I lacked motivation to make up for it.

(I didn’t want to try “bookmarking” the day like I tried to do with day 12 because that ended up biting me in the behind and it didn’t work the way I wanted it to. That’s what I get for trying to cheat. :P)

Anyway, explanations aside, I finally got this drawing finished and it may very well be one of my new favorites. Though I may very well be biased because this is one idea I’ve had since the start of last year’s Inktober when looking over the prompts, and Promare is one of my favorite anime movies! Galo in particular has become one of my new top anime characters, I love him so much! What can I say, I love me a heroic himbo with golden retriever energy. Lio is also a badass character that, while very difficult to draw, is another great character that I just love to watch in action.

So now that I am finally done with Inktober 2023, I’m going to try getting back into posting and sharing stuff more frequently. Here’s hoping I actually keep my promise and that the next thing I share isn’t the start of this year’s Inktober.
