You do not want this future to happen to you I promise you. Because the minute you enter into a subscription existence you allow for a possibility of losing everything. Why?
Well, because when you stop paying then you stop having.
I buy my cars outright for this reason.
I have not thrown away my DVD collection for this reason.
I still have my old-school ipod for this reason.
I buy songs I really like direct from the artist on top of my subscription for this reason.
I back shit up on to my external hard drives rather than depending on a cloud only for this reason (which reminds me that I need to do taht this weekend).
If someone ELSE is holding the physical source of what you’re paying for? YOU DON’T OWN IT. You’re just giving someone your energy and time for permission to access it.
You’re leasing your existence.
Don’t fucking fall for it, do you hear me?
It’s bad enough we have to lease our water, our heat, our internet and our entertainment.
Buy what you want outright WHENEVER YOU CAN. Then do anything you can to maintain it in the face of planned obsolescence. I promise you, there will be a moment when you will be glad you did
Because aside from relationships? Things are literally all the system let us keep in this existence so don’t lease your fucking possessions if at all avoidable because at this stage in capitalism we’re all a few bad days from being unable to pay those leases. And then what? Then you only have what you can keep and it is those comforts and necessities that will keep you going, I promise you. Don’t let there be anything more that can be taken from you than absolutely necessary.
One of the hardest things to learn as a leftist is that there are a lot self proclaimed leftists that are actually totally cool with abusive social systems, they just don’t like that they’re the ones being abused. The solution to male supremacy isn’t woman supremacy, it’s no supremacy. The supremacy is the bad part. This line of thinking is how you get TERFS and the NOI
I don’t love that every time a famous artist turns out to be a fucking disgusting piece of trash loser evil shitstain that everyone always scrambles to say WELL THEIR ART WAS ALWAYS MID AND BAD ANYWAY. like dude just reckon with the fact you can’t judge someone’s moral fiber based on the art they make or the clothes they wear or the way they speak or fucking anything anything at all
doing my part to break this trend: i genuinely really liked lostprophets’ music before it came out that the lead singer was a child predator, and i also still enjoy some kevin spacey acting roles like ‘the negotiator’ and 'outbreak’.
cognitive dissonance and discomfort intolerance are hard to cope with, believe me i know, but holding opposing viewpoints (e.g. “this person has caused harm to some people” and “this person has brought joy to other people”) and finding nuance in the space between is an important skill to practice.
“This song slaps, but now that I know it’s made by such a horrible person it gives me the ick and I don’t want to hear it any more” is a perfectly legitimate stance. “This art is good but I don’t want to partake in it because that will ultimately support artists who are using that money and support to make the world worse” is also a legitimate stance. “I liked this, but the author being so gross means I can’t enjoy it any more and also the fandom has become a political nucleus for bigots so I’m excising it from my life” is another perfectly legitimate stance. You can choose to disengage with art for whatever reason you want, personal or political, it just. Doesn’t mean that the quality of the art was always bad As Us Good People Knew (or should have known) because Good People make Good Art and Bad People make Bad Art.
Congress is now considering the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security, whose funding runs out at the end of January.
Call your members of Congress and tell them to vote NO on any bill that increases ICE’s funding.
Please demand that the DHS appropriations bill prohibit ICE and Border Patrol agents from carrying guns and that it unambiguously declare that agents do not have absolute immunity under the law if they harm civilians.
Also tell them that any bill must restrict ICE and Border Patrol’s ability to conduct dragnet arrest operations and target people based on their race, language or accent. And the bill must clarify that ICE agents are liable under civil and criminal law if they harm civilians.
Do this as soon as you can.
To reach your representative or senator, call the U.S. Congressional Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
Tell them the state and city where you live. They will connect you to any member’s office.
