In incredible last-day-of-trans-visibility-week news:

f1nn5ter has successfully set up her trans healthcare non-profit Anne Health

  • It is already the highest rated trans healthcare provider in the country apparently
  • Here's the page on what they actually offer
  • For HRT it seems to largely be about shared care agreements with GPs (-> they provide the expert info needed but your GP provides the actual meds -> better than *AHEM* other people's subscription models bc this means you can actually get your privately-prescribed meds on the NHS (how I got mine back in the day), but the downside is your GP has to be cool and not a transphobic dickhead about it (which I would generally recommend as a trait to look for in your GP))
  • *They can do surgical referrals but you need to check with your surgery provider if they accept them (correction bc I had not checked the FAQ properly!)
  • It includes trans youth!!! At least for therapy and advice around puberty blockers (again they do not provide any meds themselves)
  • Co-founders are former CEO of mermaids (THE trans kids charity in the UK) and founder of Think2Speak (peer support organisation)
  • It's a non-profit, so any money made outside of what is used on operational costs goes back into a pot to fund/subsidise people's care who can't afford it
  • even if you don't want to use the service itself, they also have a FAQ/resource page for general useful info
  • you can donate to it!!!! (there's a big donate button on the top of the page)

(also tiny, (big) bummer correction: the news clip at the beginning citing 8k+ people on the waiting list - yea it's double that meanwhile, and that's only the London GIC, and only the not-yet-seen waiting list (they're currently booking in ppl who got referred in 2020 for first appointments) if I am not mistaken, so not counting everyone already in the system having wait for years between appointments (hi), other services across the country, and private services' waiting lists)

So I follow N. D. Stevenson (comics writer and animator, most famous for Nimona and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) and his husband Lee Ostertag (also a comics writer and animator) on Instagram. When I started following them, they were both publicly presenting as women, and then a few years ago N. D. came out as transmasc nonbinary, and then earlier this year Lee also came out as transmasc. Anyway this is all setup to say that Lee had the chance to make the funniest post of all time and he took it:

An Instagram post from the account “molly_ostertag” showing a 4-panel comic. The first panel shows a photo of N.D. Stevenson and pre-transition Lee Ostertag kissing, with the words “regular couple” in impact font overtop of it. The second panel shows the two of them (now both transitioned) posing in sweaters with their dog, captioned “yaoi couple.” The third is a photo from their wedding day, in which they are both pre-transition and wearing wedding dresses, captioned “yuri couple.” The final panel is a close up photo of their dog captioned “I see no difference, love is love.”ALT

Absolutely iconic.

IF YOU ARE A TRANS FEMME GET YOUR THYROID CHECKED, ESPECIALLY IF YOUVE NOTICED A DROP IN LIBIDO OR AN INABILITY TO MAINTAIN A STABLE WEIGHT

It isn’t a big deal if you have hypothyroidism, you just need to take an artificial thyroid hormone called Levothyroxine…but don’t let it go untreated!!! It’s super fucked up doctors don’t regularly check our thyroid when we start HRT

cyprozombiegirl

Specifically get your thyroid-binding globulin levels, since according to these articles your thyroid hormone levels might appear normal despite this occurring

AH!

Found the link for the first image:

Said "recent study": https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8090061/

I really wish I saw this a few days ago, I was just at the endocrinologist. I'll bring it up with the PCP and see if he's willing to run that specific test or if I need to trudge back over for it.

Re-reblogging to add: Out of the 48 trans patients with thyroid diagnoses, 26 were taking estrogen and 21 were taking testosterone. One is unspecified in the article.

43 of this thyroid dx/hrt group had hypothyroidism! That's 8.7% of the population taking hrt (total sample of 554), while 3-5% is the rate in the non-hrt population.

In other words: this applies to ALL folks taking hrt. This study found that hypothyroidism is somewhat more common with estrogen hrt, but the rate is still elevated with testosterone hrt vs people not taking any at all.

If you're on hrt and show signs of thyroid issues, talk to your care provider! It's common in general, and more common in us.

Because a lot of endocrinologists are weird fatphobic transphobic assholes here is what to do to get your levels checked: ask them to run full thyroid work up including TBG and F14, F13 levels. If they refuse, claiming that your TSH levels are normal, remind them that TSH is a pituitary hormone and can take many years before matching actual thyroid hormone levels. Tell them that the prevalence of hypothyroidism in trans people is approximately 8.7%, much higher than the estimates of 3-5% in the general population, and that estrogen can overstress a trans person’s thyroid causing hypothyroidism. If they still refuse, report them to whatever body governs their behaviour and find a new doctor.

trans medical hormones are such a fucking mess i haaaaate them /j i mean for real i wish i could go without but that would mean transcending human biology so also i suppose i wouldn’t feel emotions. which would be bad (i was reading about the imacts of estrogen etc on insulin a few months back and. god. banging my head against the wall in pcos)

Do we have any advice for the young trans woman besides yelling "start hrt" at her

plainsbison

be really really consistent with self gendering - it may feel weird at first but use your nouns - " I'm his sister", " I'm her daughter", " I'm an actress" - don't start with "bitch"

remember that every feminist principle you hold for cis women ALSO extends to you as a trans woman; and that there is no right or wrong way to be a woman, only expectations imposed on us by people we have no obligation to perform for. also, genuinely: have fun and be yourself, experiment and grow and reflect and look weird sometimes, but find joy in finding what it all means to you. you've got nothing you need to be and can take it wherever you wanna go 👍🏾
