JC Si j’avais eu plus de temps, j’aurais chroniqué A Liminal Step en 2025 et il aurait certainement figuré dans mon top de l’année, car je ne m’en lasse pas.

golgari_swarm Such a musically interesting album. Lots of complexity, big crescendos, and bonus points for handpan. Top contender for album of the year for me. Unfortunately the mixing leaves a little to be desired on some songs (The Hedonist sounds great, but songs like Sigil and Lantern sound very cloudy, muddled, and underwater). It would be nice to hear things given a little more room to breathe in the mix. At times it sounds like someone just clipped all the high tones off. Favorite track: Prayer Wall.

Roland This album completely blindsided me, similar to Múr back in 2024. Never heard of this band before but man, these Danes offer some Grade A Prog Metal somewhere in between Tesseract and An Abstract Illusion.
Perfect record to ring out the year. Favorite track: Prayer Wall.

john_simonsson My preorder still has preorder status. No biggie, I'll stream it through youtube or spotify with adds till it unlocks here at bandcamp. Wish I could have been in Copenhagen for the releas party at Beta.

Sigil 05:16
Reach, a single calming strain To soothe and ground again Between, a million thoughts at play In waves, it dulls the way Appear, extending shapes of grey The fear - it permeates Breathe, The worst: the wait, the freeing Returning essence Calms the senses On days, the world unties, slips away Relay, it won't define, its okay Reach, pulling all the strings To hold, the world in reigns Tyrant, freezing Breathe in, remain Breathe The worst, the wait, the freeing Returning essence Calms the senses On days, the world unties, slips away Relay, it won't define, its okay Wake Weightless Face, a ravening Fight, flight Battle through the night I gave mine Fight, flight Crawl out of the night Oh you tried I can say, I held mine Steadfast, reason, draw a line Draw a line Would it leave me? Pass me by? Test of time On days, the world unties, slips away Relay, it won't define, it’s okay Waiting for The ravenous self-imposing, fear Weightless

Prayer Wall 06:04
A pull from underneath A reeling harmony This open secret of your Contingency Long way home Bite your tongue The risk of falling out A solitary bout Is there something more? Sorrow Sorrow burns through Sorrow Sorrow burns through The solemn words you live by They suffocate the air - now, The spite you build your walls by Became a place of prayer (Drive) The risk of falling out (Stay) A solitary bout (Pray) Is there something more? Sorrow Sorrow burns through Sorrow Sorrow burns through Sorrow Sorrow burns through Sorrow Sorrow burns The risk of falling out A solitary bout Is there something more? Long way home Bite your tongue Is there something more? Save your malice And spite Turn it into faith Hide The topple Since How could we turn a blind eye? (We’re dreading The distance We’re praying It topples Your walls, they Come crashing down) The risk of falling out Is there something more?

about

Copenhagen-based Feather Mountain returns in 2025 with the album ‘A Liminal Step’. The album revolves around psychological vulnerability expressed through progressive metal, electronic avant-garde, and inspiration from the world of tarot cards.

In the world of tarot, “The Fool” is a dreamy character at the beginning of a meaningful journey. In the same way, Feather Mountain takes a musical step into the unknown through A Liminal Step, and the listener is invited to fall with the band into an abyss. An abyss where traumas dominate, and societal structures seem crippling.

Each song is part of the albums’ red thread, and Feather Mountain leads the listener through a musical wilderness in their search for meaning – from the inner glow on Realignment to an emotional armor in Prayer Wall. On the album, an underlying realization emerges, that we are all on a journey toward understanding and self-acceptance, and A Liminal Step becomes a magical antidote in a world full of chaos.

Musically, A Liminal Step is the result of Feather Mountain’s experimentation with genre-blending, where progressive metal elements meet electronic and ambient passages, creating an eclectic and dynamic soundscape. Heavy, off-kilter riffs melt together with passages of vulnerable vocal arrangements on a backdrop of raw synths.

The instrumental reflects the album’s emotional complexity. Lyrically, A Liminal Step revolves around the struggles we have as humans; how we deal with our inner demons, confront our emotions, and try to find hope and meaning in a complex world. Along the way, Feather Mountain explores the experience of being trapped in one’s own reality and questions how we navigate as a society.
