"I know for a fact that you possess a weapon that can kill immortals. Hence, I offer a trade; I, with my limitless wealth and power, help you reach your goals, and you use it to kill me. Doesn't that sound enticing? One teensy little murder, and you get everything you've ever desired?"

why-bless-your-heart

The set-up: The ruler of a small kingdom is immortal. A poor man has an immortal-killing blade. The above deal is offered. The poor man is surprised. The ruler is kind and just and generous, everything a ruler should be. But it is explained to him that the burdens of state are too great, too exhausting. The explicit promise is made that the poor man will never want for the rest of his life.

The punchline: The ruler is slain in accordance with his wishes, at the height of pomp and ceremony. As the guards rush to seize the poor man, he's stunned to see a familiar face behind them. A brief, triumphant smile is swiftly replaced by a practiced expression of somber grief, and the ruler's cruel twin brother is crowned king.

Okay @rowenabean, this is a little shaky on the prompt (it's not a haunted house) but I did enjoy writing it. I think I want to try again and do a proper haunted house at Christmas.

My story for @inklings-challenge's Christmas event! Based on @allisonreader's prompt "Time travel via pocket watch"

Full disclosure, I wrote a 5k piece about this first, realized it wasn't very Christmas-y, then wrote this shorter thing. I may share that other story sometime soon though because I adore the world building a LOT. Until then! Enjoy this lil alt-history story!

This was probably a bad idea.

Actually, it was almost certainly a monumentally bad idea. But Kiel had gone this far. He glanced down at the pocket watch in his hand, the light from the skylight above him glinting off of it.

this is so sweet! their budding romance is darling and the time travel is fascinating i was assuming steampunk time travel tech so when the 'magic lurking in the corners' stuff was mentioned it opened up a whole new world of possibilities i'd love to see more adventures in the inklings challenge fantasy time travel

Another addition to the “why do I keep having YA/romantasy-style dreams when I don’t read those books?” collection.

These four are friends who attend a boarding school/uni together, which is a mixed human x elves institution meant to foster friendship between the races. Both girls are named Joanne, but people started calling one girl Anne and the other Jo (despite being great friends, Jo was a bit resentful about that. Her family had called her Anne most of her life. Why was this detail in my dream? No idea).

The two elven boys, princes of their respective regions, both have a crush on Anne. Jo has a crush on Arren, and they have been friends since childhood. Anne likes Yahn, but also finds him extremely annoying, and the two enjoy bickering with each other. Yahn constantly flirts with her and says the stupidest stuff while also dying on the inside at how cringe he is being. He’s a slightly pompous and silly idiot, while paradoxically quite smart and emotionally intelligent.

Arren on the other hand is quiet and stoic, but also has a very dry sense of humor and great comedic timing. Jo is super smart and on a scholarship, and is bitingly sarcastic with a monotone kind of voice (reckon she was inspired by Mira from kpdh). Anne is mostly kind, sweet, and thoughtful, but can have a fiery temper.

The actual story of the dream progressed thus; one day a human girl turns up dead, with residual magic energy found on and in her. Everyone believes she was killed by an elf, and tensions in the school become very high. Our 4 protags start trying to investigate the murder, and end up stumbling upon a group of students using dark magic, but they’re all wearing masks and hoods and escape without being caught. Nasty accidents and close calls keep happening to all 4 of our protagonists, who manage to survive all these attempts to stop them.

Finally, one night there is a moment when the 2 Princes suddenly turn on each other, starting a vicious duel with intent to kill. Anne tries to stop them and is stabbed by Yahn, who seems horrified but unable to stop, and the fight continues. Jo desperately tries to help Anne, who is bleeding heavily. Anne, her hand bloody from holding her wound, reaches out towards the fight suddenly and releases a massive burst of magic. It breaks the spell over the boys, who immediately stop and rush over. Anne isn’t breathing, but Yahn uses his magic to heal her. Even healed she’s exhausted and in pain, and so is he. It took a lot of power, and he’d already used a lot in the duel.

The 4 then hear a bunch of shouting and noise coming closer, and a trio of students come running out. They tell them that after the magic blast the teachers found a bunch of human students very sick, some dead, obviously in the middle of some evil magic ritual. The human students, some of the top scoring students of the school, had been doing dangerous forbidden spells and experiments to gain magic, that humans in this world don’t naturally possess. It was the sudden removal of the magic, cause by Anne’s spell, that made them become sick or die. The original girl that died had been part of their conspiracy and had not been able to cope with the magic, which killed her.

The group confessed to hating elves, and had just decided on a plan to get the princes to kill each other, in order to restart an ancient war between their two elvish provinces so that elves would be forced out of human society. Thankfully, having been thwarted, they get removed from the school.

In the end it turns out that Anne had elvish ancestry all along and that her family had kept it quiet out of the stigma attached to being part elvish.

Predictably, Yahn and Anne end up together, and Arren realises his love for Jo. Happy ending.

Oh and also both guys were shirtless during their duel. For no reason. Which made me, the omniscient viewer, drop my head in my hands and groan in exasperation 🙄😂

So, @freenarnian asked to hear more about my 'fantasy airforce that's totally not the knights of Malta' (thanks for your interest, my friend!) Noting that this is all in early stages of development, and so much is still very sketchy, the main points are:

-they are an organisation of dragon riders, with each rider bonded to a specific airborne firebreather. (in the vein of Eragon, or Temeraire, or Jade Torch by Anne Marie Wells). This is entirely voluntary on both sides.

-I've been going back and forth on whether they're a corps within a particular country's military or a sort of international order of knights, but am currently leaning toward the latter. I do love a good knightly order and the Knights Hospitaller (the Order of Malta) in particular

-they carry out a range of missions in defence of the realm or alliance (again, I'm still not certain of the politics and geography yet) to which they belong, including but not limited to aerial reconnaissance, counter-piracy, special operations, and direct action in 'conventional' naval and land battles (a possible finale for the main story is essentially Lepanto 1575 but Don John has air support).

-this means that riders need to be prepared for a range of challenges - whether that's aerial combat, springing someone from an enemy stronghold, or boarding pirate ships and fighting hand-to-hand (one might compare them loosely to Wraith Squadron from the old Star Wars books or the Wildcards from Space: Above and Beyond - if anyone has seen that)

-the dragons themselves are sentient, talkative individuals, and vital members of the team. without real foundations of trust and respect between them and the riders, none of this would be possible (I hope to make them colourful characters in their own right.)

-this force is divided into 'wings' of in the region of ten or twelve dragons, each positioned to protect a particular area. The one to which my protagonist belongs covers part of something very like the Mediterranean Sea, from a location resembling Gibraltar, Malta, or Rhodes.

that's about all I've got so far. Thank you again, writing this up actually helped me clarify some of it in my head.

you had me at 'lepanto with air support' fantasy

I think I’ve finally figured out what “old enough for fairy tales” really means. It’s not that you’ve matured out of wanting realistic stories and can handle fantasy again. It’s that you stop analyzing and critiquing every element of the story and worldbuilding and just enjoy what you’ve been given.

Fantasy novels are not fairy tales. Fantasy novels are reality with extra steps, and the endless threads of people critiquing fantasy worlds that don’t have perfect medieval agricultural techniques or sensible trade routes proves it.

At a certain point, you just get too old to care about the implications of the governmental structure of the magic kingdom. You just want to see the king kill the dragon with the magic sword, and be happy when he does it, because that’s the kind of story this is and it’s okay to just go along with it.

random thought of the day fantasy brought to you because i made the mistake of looking up review of the new fantastic four movie and seeing takes like 'are they running a cult?' get right the heck out of here! there's a gorgeous aesthetic and superpowers and a baby and a funny robot that runs by putting cassette tapes in his head is that not enough for you? must we tear the heart and soul out of everything by ripping the corpse to shreds? can we not just have joy and whimsy and take stories on their own terms? this is not the type of story where you're supposed to analyze the structures according to the real world this is a happy fun cartoon world and we're supposed to have fun here! start having fun!

Horrible fantasy idea:

Every time the royal firstborn happens to be twins, the dispute of which one is the one who is the rightful heir to the throne is settled by division of labour: One of them is to become the future queen/king, and the other one is to become the royal jester. One can do whatever they want but must be very careful with what they say, the other can say whatever they want but must be very careful with what they do.

It is not exactly uncommon for the two to fight over which one gets to be the jester. But in the occasion when they agree to take turns on which one sits on the throne and which one at the foot of it (in disguise of course), it's considered polite to at least pretend to not notice the ruse.

Runaways is Here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

image

AAAAA

First, forgive me for shilling my wares: eBook and Print copies are available everywhere and signed copies will continue to be available on my Ko-Fi shop! It’s been so surreal and exciting to hold copies in my hands and send them out to family and friends.

If you read my story, please consider leaving a review on one of the following platforms. Reviews are a huge deal for authors (especially indie authors like myself) because they help boost our ratings in the algorithm to reach new readers, and they help convince new readers that the book might be worth reading. You can always copy/paste your review between the different sites so it can be super easy.

AmazonGoodreadsBarnes&NobleStorygraph

Likewise, word-of-mouth marketing is super helpful. If you want to support Runaways, tell people about it! If you know someone who’d love a story about sisterhood, betrayal, faerie bargains, and redemption, then send them the links.

In case you missed my earlier announcement, I’m doing a live stream TONIGHT with a special guest!! My very own sister is visiting for her fall break and she’s going to be joining me on YouTube for a live reading of the first chapter and a live Q&A!! If you want to ask me or my sister any questions about the book, being a writer, or our sibling shenanigans, be sure to tune in at 8:00PM EST on October 31st! If you miss it, the recording will be on my channel as a VOD.

Finally, I just want to say thank you again to everyone who’s supported me in these past weeks. It’s so surreal and gratifying to call myself a published author today. This has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid, and so many people have touched my life to bring me to this moment. 5 years ago, I could never have dreamed how each “God Moments” would nudge so many kindred spirits across my path. At the risk of writing a whole new Acknowledgments section, it’s touching to think about how many people have taken a chance on my imagination. Thank you.

Welcome to Faerieland.

hey congrats!!! (somehow this snuck up on me) (and i forgot to associate 'halloween release day' with you know the date of halloween) books fantasy ettawritesnstudies
