this is great, because the cat looks at her, kind of studies her for a moment and then turns away and imitates her position and the way she's looking out towards nothing (actually toward the camera but to the cat it looks like nothing of particular interest).

Cats use mimicry as a form of social bonding. This is why so often if you have to cats you'll find them napping near each other in the same position. It's like they look and say "ahh I see you are napping in a U shape, I also enjoy napping in that particular shape. I am friendly and will U shape nap along with you"

This cat studies the strange human and goes "okay, guess we're sitting upright and staring blankly out into space. I can get into that" and proceeds to do just that.
