Well, as to 1., I think the Olympics are still a great bit of international solidarity, if a huge terrorism target.
2., I don't know much about the security, but I assume the Chinese authorities will be heavy handed, as usual.
3., I think the police should do what they are best at, being a highly visible deterrent. They are best at showing a presence, and making sure that everyone *knows*, that they are being protected.

The Beijing Olympics will be more than just a display of athletic prowess of it's participants, but a showcase for China's economic power and it's culture. It will allow the world a window into a country very few people (mostly Americans) know much about, save for the fact that it's one of the largest and most populated nations.

As for security, because the reputation of China rides on the security of these games, I would think that security would be extraordinary. Any mishap could result in a blemish. And anyone who hosts even a party hates to look poorly in front of guests.

I think the police or security forces should remain vigilant. This will probably mean that bags should be checked and airports screened. Guards should remain vigilant when guarding the Olympic village, as no one would want a incident like what happened in Munich in 1972. I would like to hope that China will be quite able to diffuse any potential situation, should it arise. I would also like to hope that more people will be interested in China as a country. It seem like a nice place to visit.

I wouldn't know much about that, perhaps treat it like airline securety if you want it to be safe...

I think the Olympics are a pain in the but nobody really cares about until the media whip up interest. A week after the event, nobody remembers what country won how many gold medals, or what the names of any of the atheletes are. Whagtever ideal the Olympics may have served once, today its just Big Business. It's run by a committee of sheikhs, dukes, rajahs, barons, princes and businessmen who profit by huge bribes and gifts by bidding cities. It almost makes heavyweight boxing seem honest...
