Sentry/Jira ingeration and REST API

Problem Statement

Reported via Discord: For now, the only ways to create a Jira issue when a sentry event happens is the Alert system or have an user do manually via the GUI.

Would it be possible to do it with an API endpoint ? Basically, the whole Sentry/Jira integration i(and the release system) is too "light" for us, and we want to have our own service running to synchronise things. But we can't link a Sentry issue with a jira ticket via API.

My high level question is how would this API be used? Today, an error happens and Sentry detects which leads to an issue on Sentry as well as a ticket on Jira. The sync happens every time so I don't understand the value of calling a sync API.

Here are a few usecases where tha API point would solve some hassle for us:

1. Linking a Sentry issue to an existing jira ticket. We have a service that searches our sentry database to find issues that match already registered jira tickets (written for example by QA). With this API point, we could easily link the sentry issue with the matching jira ticket.
2. We want to parse all news issues/events, check some combinaison of tags/versions on them, check if it's not a duplicate... and then only decide if we want to create a Jira ticket. Right now the only way to do it is with the sentry alert system, and for us it's not enough. If we had this API point, we could:

• Have our service check new issues/events, and apply whatever "outside" logic we want to decide if we want to follow it on jira
• Create a jira ticket with Jira API, and populate it however we want
• Link the newly created jira ticket on the sentry issue.

We have that endpoint but it's not publicly documented. I'm hoping it will be some time this quarter 🎉

You can do that today using an internal integration. https://docs.sentry.io/organization/integrations/integration-platform/internal-integration/
It will call webhook on issue creation and you can do what you want with that Data, create a Jira ticket and sync with Jira using the above API.
