Regardless of what you think of Arin Hanson he had a really good bit when he was discussing “fan influence” in some episode of something. I can’t remember which but the line has stuck with me since the moment I heard it.
I’m paraphrasing but it was along the lines of “you can’t let fans influence your work because it’s YOUR work they’ve been coming to see, once you let fans influence it, it’s no longer YOUR work and as a result the quality suffers and you alienate your other fans.” And I think this is honestly the best possible advice for dealing with large fandoms as a creator.
