WAEPA is a highly disorganized and dysfunctional organization with serious leadership and culture issues.
Company-wide meetings are held weekly and are largely dominated by the owner repeating company history and personal anecdotes, rather than addressing operational issues or employee concerns. These meetings feel performative and unproductive.
There is a stark imbalance in compensation. Executive leadership (CEO, CFO, and other officers) hold inflated titles and reportedly earn compensation well in excess of $400,000 annually, while frontline employees—customer service, IT, and operational staff—are paid under $80,000. This gap is felt daily and contributes to low morale and high turnover.
Although WAEPA operates as a nonprofit, the organization functions more like a revenue-driven entity. Premiums for members—many of whom are retired government employees and veterans—are routinely increased, offering little advantage over market alternatives. Additionally, the life insurance products marketed by WAEPA are administered through a separate company, a detail not always made clear.
Leadership is heavily self-promoted, with the owner prominently featured in advertisements, promotional materials, and public appearances. The focus appears to be on visibility rather than transparency or service improvement.
Prospective employees and potential members should conduct thorough research before engaging with this organization, including reviewing executive compensation and comparing rates with other providers.

I had questions about carrying my coverage into retirement and the person I spoke was pleasant and helpful.

I've had WAEPA life insurance for years. They are a trusted company with great communication. I've enjoyed the yearly premium refund. They are a very caring company and I always recommend WAEPA.

WAEPA is a great alternative to Federal Life Insurance which is very costly in retirement.

Having been with WAEPA since 1999 and now retired and at age 77 my rate has quardrupled. I had to reduce my coverage because of the large increase in premiums as I no longer was able to pay the much larger premium. When I call WAEPA to ask about my potential increase at age 80, no one seems to know how much it will be. Also, I ask what happens at at 85 (should I live that long), again no concrete answers.

Peace of mind knowing my loved ones will be financially protected if something happens to me. It also helps me feel more secure about the future, knowing I’ve planned ahead responsibly.

Do not apply for Waepa. Stay with FEGLI... I found out the hard way in believing the low rates for high principal. Sounds great when young, but no real info on the decreasing principal and increasing premium.
I started many years ago with max $500K principal and every 5 years the premium went up and the principal went down. I just recently canceled my policy. At 75 years old my premium went to about $9K a year and the principal, after many reductions went to about 20% of original. Although FEGLI is a bit more expensive the principal never changes (goes up) since FEGLI is whole life. I would have had over $1 million K in life insurance with FEGLI for a fraction of the cost. I sure have learned a lesson from predatory companies!!!

I applied for a policy, and it seemed to be a decent deal, except that I have seen NOTHING from them except a bill for the first quarter. When I wrote back that I needed to know what exactly I was purchasing, I was told that they don't send out the policy until they receive payment. Is this for real? How can I pay for a policy of unknown amount, unknown terms and unknown type? I have never heard of such business practices. They are incredibly slow at responding to emails.

Great life insurance company, with affordable rates and good coverage. Customer service is excellent and they offer scholarships to their customers and children.

I switched from FEGLI to WAEPA. I'm spending an amount that's very reasonable to me for the right amount of coverage. Switching was easy. Also, my high school graduate earned a WAEPA scholarship, so being a member is already a great investment.

In June 2024 I sent my required payment to WAEPA, on Jul. 9 that check cleared my checking account. In Sep. 2024 they sent me a letter advising that cancelling my insurance for lack of payment was being processed. I called in to respond and was advised that a correction would be made reinstating my insurance. Each year there has been a designated partial refund of payments to those in "good standing". The company representative advised that I would qualify with the correction. Now it is 12/10 and still no check. Called in again and the representative said the previous was not true and that I was ineligible for lack of standing. I told him this was corporate malfeasance and that my standing should be as reinstated and eligible because it was not my mistake, but theirs. The Rep agreed to move to correct and agreed to send me an email noting what was being done and that receipt of my rebate should happen by the end of the month. Well, as of today's date there has been no contact and no e-mail. William Parke
