J. Wright Reviews Well, this EP was surprising! It takes all of the heavier elements of Wanderlust and distills it down to blackened death(core). It's a single track in four parts, telling an allegorical story about a man facing his sins and eventually proclaiming himself king above them, putting them to the sword... at least, that's my interpretation. Very epic, very crushing. Not old school Illyria but still thoroughly enjoyable! Favorite track: The Walk Of Atonement IV.

While I'm a metal guy, this is not my normal go-to subgenre. I can't point to any single aspect and tell you that's why I like this album, but I can say that the complete package is fantastic and I'm so glad that I found it. Pragma is super beautiful in the most metal way. It made me pay close attention to the rest of the album. The riff in Sirens is evil and I love it. Wrath is the one that makes me want to run through a wall though. I normally have to listen to that one twice. chasman70

This album took a different approach to their debut, bringing a lot more melody to the mix. The shoegaze guitar work has been dramatically reduced in most areas; in its place is more of a progressive post-hardcore foundation. It still has plenty of the blackgaze present on the debut but takes a more delicate and emotive approach this time around. It also eschews its RuneScape lyricism for laments about the state of the world and moving past personal conflicts. Equally great listen! J. Wright Reviews

I found Illyria through a suggestion when looking for atmospheric black metal/blackgaze that didn't have Satanic or depressing lyrics. The RuneScape lyrics/song titles immediately appealed to me as a 20 year vet of that game. However, the music also caught me immediately, with its heavy use of beautiful melodies and atmospherics alongside bursts of anger and energy that create such a perfect balance of aesthetic. I had somehow missed this album. I heard the first two and Wanderlust, but only found out about this one after I bought the discography. This album takes a significantly different direction, leaning harder into atmospheric post-hardcore territory. This sound shift goes well with the album title, eschewing bleak atmosphere and shifting toward more progressive song structuring overall. I could do without the cussing (which just feels unnecessary) but overall, it's an enjoyable listen! J. Wright Reviews
