this may be an Unpopular Opinion (even on tumblr) but like the 8-hour workday is just Too Gotdamn Long

like even sitting in an office for eight hours a day isn’t particularly pleasant (or healthy, as we are beginning to see) but when we’re talking about doing *actual work* for that same amount time it gets pretty fucking brutal

doing literally *anything* (even leisure activities) for eight hours straight tends to be less than enjoyable but when we’re talking about things like construction, landscaping, factory work, and hell, even foodservice and retail, eight hours is a fucking ETERNITY

i might just be a lazy weak-willed bitch but honestly i think i’m not entirely wrong

this was being worked towards by leftist labor unions way back in the day after the time of FDRs new deal. people in the 40s and 50s were already starting to realize that we no longer actually needed an 8 hour work day or even a 5 day work week.

even with the comparatively primitive factory tech of the time we were already creating a huge amount of excess production back then and companies were making massive amounts of profit. So it already stood to reason that companies should either let their employees work less and thus each employee could work a shorter shift without lowering the yearly compensation of each employee, or in cases where businesses provide an active service they would shorten the shift but hire more people to cover the necessary operating time. but of course that would mean less money for people at the top so companies fought back hard and we ended up with nixon’s bullshit and so on and now its considered the norm for us to spend the vast majority of our lives doing work that really just amounts to waste.

The IWW realised this and were fighting for it all the way back in the 1930s. This is a take with a lot of historical and theoretical grounding, OP, so you’re standing in good stead.

I’d also like to add it’s also been studied and scientifically proven that after 6 hours, we have an extremely noticeable drop in productivity. Sweden saw nothing but benefits from a 6-hour work day, including worker productivity, happiness, and half the amount of sick-leave used when applied to nurses.

https://onlinemasters.ohio.edu/the-six-hour-workday/

Just gonna add that the IWW is still kicking and basically anyone who is not an employer can join.

I just want to say, thank you, sensible people of tumblr, for giving this more notes than my other post where idiots were calling gun control racist.

So. Gun control by itself is not racist. The way it would be enforced in the United States due to the current govt structure being built upon and for systemic racism, would end up not only being racist but also sexist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, ableist, etc. The current US govt cannot be trusted to not target the weakest, underrepresented, disenfranchised and marginalized groups in the country after effectively taking away their ability to legally acquire a means to defend themselves.

While change obviously needs to happen, we also need to be very aware of this and cognizant that we don’t set a precedent that would allow for the weakening of rights like we are seeing happen right now in the United States; The current lack of due process for those being disappeared, the increasingly restrictive “reasonable” explanations for what makes a “valid” abortion - the moment you say that anyone who is “mentally unstable,” for example, shouldn’t be allowed a firearm, allows for them to then have reason to work towards including anything they want as “mental instability.” You’re gay? Mental instability. You’re an unmarried woman? Mental instability. You’re a person of color or poor? Mental instability. Again, giving the govt the ability to specifically target these groups and take away not only their constitutional rights by starting with the 2nd amendment, but also their human rights as they are CURRENTLY DOING. The police are the inland military force whose only job is to protect the wealthy and political elite. They will come for detractors, they will come for “terrorists,” they will come for “dangers to the community,” they will come for “predators to our children,” they will come for YOU. And the law will not protect you.

Also the criminalization of substances and weapons has historically been used to target black and lower income communities, so maybe don’t just blow off anyone trying to talk about this topic. I understand some people may not be really educated on the topic, but I went to college for this. I got my degree on this stuff. There is absolutely a point to be made for this and I had a whole course one semester on the way the police in the US are used in such a way that fits the definition of domestic terrorism and the way they target black communities, and it is only going to continue to get worse. They want you to be unable to fight back. Never forget that.

The latest 11.0 update means that Google Analytics is a thing on the switch and turned on. What that means is that Nintendo has a deal with Google to share with them your data for advertisement purposes.

To turn it off

  1. go to the eShop
  2. go to your profile where your funds and account info is
  3. go down to the bottom of the page
  4. there you will see “Google Analytics Preferences”
  5. select the Change
  6. select “Don’t Share

Please spread the word. Really shitty of Nintendo to just quietly start allowing Google to spy on users for advertising.

hbo max blocks screenshots even when I use the snipping tool AND firefox AND ublock which is a fucking first. i will never understand streaming services blocking the ability to take screenshots thats literally free advertising for your show right there. HOW THE HELL IS SOMEBODY GONNA PIRATE YOUR SHOW THROUGH SCREENSHOTS. JACKASS

somewhere out there is a guy who meticulously takes screenshots of every individual frame of his favorite tv shows and then painstakingly etches each one onto a roll of film which he puts into his old timey projector and recreates the footage as a silent film with his own lavishly hand-lettered dialogue cards and original score that he plays on his upright piano and charges audiences one shiny penny a play. at last, big media has finally outsmarted ol’ Zachary Zoetrope

PSA for everyone who doesn’t know, explained simply

this is NOT because of blocking screenshots, it’s because of HOW streaming sites use your computer’s hardware to optimise performance, which means the thing rendering the video and the thing capturing your screen aren’t the SAME thing. so they can’t talk together.

you can fix this by going to your browser settings, searching for “hardware acceleration”, and turning that off.

I know this sounds like the deranged ramblings of a senile old man but I swear it used to be possible to look up information on the internet

It still is but you either have to know a way. Or you have to pay.

nhs.gov - or most places with .gov or .edu - reasonably accurate healthcare information. (go to your doctor tho) Stay the hell away from healthline and their affiliate websites, which don’t even let you view the site unless you accept all their ad cookies.

arxiv.org - run by Cornell U, you can find pretty much any peer-reviewed article here from many fields, but it doesn’t take much to self-publish so always always check the sources

there is of course always your local library, particularly through a university, which is built for looking up stuff efficiently.

I feel like I should make a post about this because it’s not something that’s very well-known, and that Americans in particular may need to know about given the uncertain state of our healthcare system at the moment. I’ve wanted to write this out for a while, It’s kind of a long post, so sorry about that!

If you have an emergency and have to go to the hospital, you’ll owe the hospital a lot of money.
(I got into a car wreck and broke my ankle and my arm. My hospital bill was around $20,000)

You’ll also owe the ambulance provider, if you need one.
(My ambulance bill was about $800)

You may get separate bills from the anesthesiologist or surgeon.
(My anesthesiologist bill was $1,700)

You may need follow-up appointments.
(My orthopedic surgeon billed me for the appointments and his surgery together and it was about $1,000)

You’ve also got to pay for medical equipment you need afterward, like crutches or a walking boot.
(Mine cost about $75)

Altogether, I ended up with almost $24,000 in medical debt from one car accident. That’s a really scary number for someone like me who makes $10/hr at a 12 hour a week job.

I got my debt down to $1075 by making some phone calls and submitting some paperwork.

The first thing I did was contact the hospital. They don’t make it easy to find, but many hospitals (perhaps most hospitals?) have financial assistance programs for people who can’t afford medical bills. I don’t make a lot of money, and I have bills to pay, so they were able to help me.
I called the billing department and asked if they had any assistance programs for low income people who can’t pay their bills. I had to call multiple times, and I got transferred in circles by people who didn’t know what I was talking about. Finally, I got an appointment with someone in “Eligibility Services” (I don’t know what other hospitals call it, if it’s something different). I had to bring my pay stubs and copies of all of my bills. When I got to the hospital for the appointment, nobody knew what I was talking about so I had to wander a little to find where I needed to go. I spoke with the guy in Eligibility Services, and I waited for a decision on how much of the bill they would forgive. A month later, I got a call telling me it was totally forgiven.

I did the same thing for my ambulance bill and my anesthesiologist, but the process was a LOT easier. I just had to mail some paperwork and it was totally forgiven.

I didn’t bother with the medical equipment suppliers, since the bills came from separate companies and I didn’t feel like going through the process twice for $75. I was assured at the hospital that they had similar programs for debt forgiveness, so I could have probably avoided paying that too.

The only thing I couldn’t get taken care of was the surgeon/follow-up appointment cost, but they were able to put me on a no-interest payment plan.

Medical debt is scary because it’s something that can come from stuff that’s already really scary. I didn’t need the burden of $24,000 in debt on top of trying to get around on a crutch with a broken arm (it’s not easy, believe me!).. but I can’t imagine what it would be like with a bigger debt or a more severe medical emergency.
I see lots of people in even worse trouble than I was in, both financially and medically. Please know that there are options for you when that GoFundMe doesn’t do enough. Even if your income is higher than mine, it’s worth a shot even for partial debt forgiveness.

I am about 900% sure there are people who don`the know this.

PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU LIVE IN AMERICA AND HAVE MEDICAL BILLS

I had to do this once as well and I can ABSOLUTELY confirm that this is true.

Get in contact with the hospital. Don’t just…sit there and let the anxiety grow and panic and then ignore it in an effort to find peace.

Reblogging this because they don’t teach us this in school

RECALL POST! huge listeria outbreak in the US & canada that has been ongoing for YEARS, with dozens of foods recalled!

posted february 10, 2024

fucking hell. what the fuck. CLICK THE LINKS FOR MORE INFORMATION, INCLUDING SPECIFIC PRODUCTS. there will be more updates. this recall is ongoing and more products are being recalled by the day.

“The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multi-year, multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to queso fresco and cotija cheeses manufactured by Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc., of Modesto, California.

This outbreak includes cases dating back to 2014 and is currently ongoing.”

DATING BACK TO -> 2014 <-

listeriosis, the infection caused by listeria, can become very serious, and can cause death, miscarriage, and lifelong disability. most infections are not severe. listeria typically makes you sick within 2 weeks of exposure, but it can take as long as 3 months after being exposed to get sick. listeria is the third leading cause of foodborne illness deaths in the united states, and there have been confirmed deaths from this outbreak.

rizo-lopez foods supplies dairy ingredients to dozens of different brands making dozens of different types of foods across the entire country.

recalled products include:

  • salad kits and salad dressing
  • taco kits
  • bean dips and salsa
  • corn bites
  • cojita cheese, queso fresco cheese, ricotta cheese
  • sour cream and yogurt
  • sandwiches and wraps
  • other freshly made foods
  • …and other products containing dairy ingredients sourced from rizo-lopez foods, from brand names such as

Bright Farms, Campesino, Casa Cardenas, Dole, Don Francisco, Don Pancho, Dos Ranchitos, El Huache, Food City, Fresh Express, H-E-B, La Ordena, Marketside, President’s Choice, Ready Pac Bistro, Rio Grande, Rizo Bros, Rojos, San Carlos, Santa Maria, Tio Francisco, Trader Joe’s, 365 Whole Foods Market.

and freshly made food from various stores. for a good chunk of these products, all prior expiration dates are being recalled. many of these foods have been potentially contaminated for years.

directions from the CDC:

  • Do not eat any recalled products.
  • Throw them away or return them to where you bought them.
  • Clean the refrigerator, containers, and surfaces that may have touched the recalled products.
  • Listeria can survive in the refrigerator and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.
  • Call a healthcare provider right away if you have these symptoms after eating recalled products:
  • Pregnant people usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness.
  • People who are not pregnant usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. They may also get a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.

Listeria is especially harmful to people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or have weakened immune systems. This is because Listeria is more likely to spread beyond their gut to other parts of their body, resulting in a severe condition known as invasive listeriosis.”

you can check the ongoing list of recalled products as well as more information about the outbreak in the US through the FDA link or the CDC link.

for canada: the canadian recalls link to the US FDA + CDC investigation for more detailed information, but you can keep track of rizo-lopez recalls in canada here.

check your fridge, check your freezer, check your emails and voicemails for recall notifications, check in on others, clean contaminated surfaces thoroughly, and stay safe. do NOT fuck with listeria!

this outbreak and associated recalls affect food commonly eaten during the superbowl! which is tomorrow! please check the links for the recall list if you plan on eating or serving anything dairy, or if you know anyone throwing a party!

girl typing a very specific question into google search bar, scrunching her face as she takes time to make sure she hasn’t made any spelling errors, hitting enter, shaking her head as google only presents her with unhelpful websites that don’t answer her query at all, moving her cursor back to the search bar and clicking on it so she can carefully write ‘reddit’ at the end, hitting enter again, sighing with relief as she finds a link to a reddit post asking the exact question she needed answered posted in a subreddit for a very niche topic, finally moving her cursor to click on the link, wondering why she didn’t go straight to the subreddit earlier, only to be met with a deleted comment with a reply from the OP stating 'that was very helpful, thanks’, sighing with frustration as she moves her cursor back to the search bar so she can copy the link and paste it into the wayback machine,

Replace “reddit” with “reveddit” in any reddit url to reveal deleted or removed comments. If the comment/post was deleted too quickly after it was posted, it may not pull it up, but it works most of the time

girl after reading a post on tumblr dot com with a reblog by user impossiblepackage, moving her cursor over to the url of the aforementioned reddit post, using her mouse to highlight the word “reddit”, typing out the word “reveddit” in its place, hitting enter, waiting with bated breath as reveddit loads, finally content as the deleted comment is displayed in front of her eyes containing the information she sought for so long.

My hypothesis is that in like 10 years gen z is gonna have a big cult boom the way the boomers did in the 70s

It’s already happening on tik tok. There’s a fun new thing going round that’s citing common symptoms of depression and anxiety as signs you’re about to have your awakening and that you are actually an alien and the reason you don’t feel right is because you’re home sick for your own galaxy. So that’s fun.

agreed, and i don’t mean this in a “haha gen z is so dumb they’re gonna join a tiktok cult lmao” i mean that conditions are perfect for the formation of cults right now.

  • high unemployment and a lot of underpaying, pointless jobs = people are looking for things to do with their life, a purpose
  • skyrocketing cost of living = most young people will not be able to live on their own, meaning some will end up in a group living situation with people interested in recruiting them
  • it’s a time of great cultural and political upheaval, nothing feels real, people are desperate for meaning and human connection. cults promise that
  • there is a new wave of acceptance and understanding for ways of life outside the norm, which is great! …except for when cult leaders tell you abusive and controlling practices are just their culture, their religion, their lifestyle, their beliefs, their tradition, and if you disrespect it you are the problem
  • social media influencers have already shown us how easy it is to build a cult of personality and attract people from anywhere in the world who are interested in the exact brand you are selling
  • spirtuality is having a boom, as are things like astrology, crystals, tarot, meditation, energy… those things aren’t bad on their own but they are often used as tools of cult spaces
  • wellness. i think a lot of people are already in wellness cults. you can make people do a lot of things in the name of “wellness” and a big factor of maintaining a cult is keeping members in a state of decreased cognition….. like say, with regular fasting
  • i think people are just unaware in general of how cults function, especially because the satanic panic was a big stupid false alarm that convinced the youths that dungeons and dragons or doom were gateways to cults, which are scary evil child murdering, satan-worshipping gangs. people don’t know how to spot them in real life.

So if that’s the case everyone remember with me the cardinal rules of not getting cult’d

SOCIAL BUFFER: Learn what healthy social boundaries are and develop relationships which are within those boundaries.

Be wary of those who step on your or others’ boundaries. Be there for your friends, but don’t be their therapists or parents. Go get coffee or juice or snacks & chat casually with a friendly crew on a regular basis.

ESTEEM BUFFER. Recognize that you and every other person on this planet are owed a baseline of respect.

Respect means that what you wear, what/who you take interest in, and who/what you are are things which you decide on based on your own reasoning. If anyone is trying to change your mind, make sure to think critically about their side and decide for yourself whether you want to change. Ask: Why do they want you to change? Is that valid to your situation? Who / what would benefit from this change? Do you want them / it to benefit? Then decide for yourself.

RELAXATION BUFFER. Take time exclusively for yourself.

Take care of your body and mind when it needs to be fed, watered, washed, or nurtured. Have a couple hobbies that are just for you. Have more than one interest. Think about more than just one topic. Cults keep you focused on them to the exclusion of all else, so don’t allow yourself to be blocked in.

BUBBLE POP BUFFER: Learn from multiple sources, even ones you don’t like or respect.

Read multiple sources’ versions of events before you decide what you feel about something. Recognize that not all sources are valid, but understand what those invalid sources are trying to do. Are they misguided or malicious? Who are THEIR sources? What is the agenda? Who benefits? Why would they want to say what they’re saying? Do they have a point? Who pays them? What do they care about? Then make your decision.

BEWARE THE B.I.T.E.: Cults control people via Behavior, Information, Thought, and Emotion control. BITE

Look up the BITE model and consider it against groups you wish to join / have joined.

Remember. You are the arbiter of your mind.

You have the blessing and burden of making your own decisions. Other people who will love and care about you throughout your life will want you to think for yourself and will think for themselves.

You are not alone. You are worthwhile. Your thoughts are your own and you have every right to control them yourself.

Brazil is suffering from the worst COVID outbreak there is, and no one is talking about it. This is not just in terms of the number of cases, but also the government’s active refusal to do anything and in fact hurting attempts to help. 1 in every 4 COVID deaths in the world is in Brazil. There isn’t enough access to vaccines. Food is unaffordable, let alone masks. People are actually starving to death. Hospitals don’t have enough beds or oxygen. And if this is not enough of a reason to talk about it, the variant that is sweeping through Brazil is twice as contagious, and has also been seen to infect people who have already been infected with other variations of the virus. The variant has crossed borders already.

These Twitter threads give all the details that i know. Please go through this and share widely.
