Hi there!

I'm a writer looking for a game to write for.

My past games I've written include:

  • Don't Speak Just Drive - An ascending anxiety contained-car thriller about the horror of being disliked. (Ranked 1st in Story for the SCREAM FOREVER jam.)
  • MUTALO - A story-rich deckbuilder centred around a magistrate returning his home town after an absence of 20 years, trying to solve the mystery of a recent string of monster attacks.

I'm looking for more experience, specifically in the writing of games, and I would love to gain some experience here.

Please contact me if you'd like me to write for your team. Thanks!

Oh okay, then yes, you may download this game's description and reference images :) Have a good day

Hi there! Thanks for the enthusiasm. I am curious what this might be for. Could you elaborate further? Just curious since you've posted it on a few game profiles in a short time and I'm interested in what you're trying to achieve. :D

Hi there!

This post might come as a surprise to you but I'm fulfilling my obligation of writing a review for every entry I played in the RPG Maker Game Jam 2025 and haven't had the time and motivation combo until now. Apologies for the wait.

I'm one of the 6 judges for this RPG Maker Game Jam 2025. I was one of the 2 judges assigned to your game, and we have been assigned to rate your games according to each metric highlighted on the game's main jam page, and submit these ratings to the organisers, who will then appropriate what happens with that. Please contact them in the Q&A if you have any further questions about the judging process. The judges will work on different time schedules, so even if I may have finished playing your game, the entire process might not be finished as of yet. Many of these reviews I am posting while still judging.

All that aside, I'd like to share my VOD of me playing your game, which contains up to an hour of gameplay, and some final thoughts at the end! Depending on whether I stopped the VOD early or not, it will also contain many of the thoughts that I say to you below, which may cause repetition. So just be aware of that.

I will also attach a review below this VOD. I will not disclose my ratings for each category as of yet, but those will be revealed in due time. Not all judges are required to post a review or VOD to each game, but many will do so even if it's optional, including myself.

Here's the VOD:

Theme

The twist at the end was beyond expectations for sure. So it gets a good number of points for that. More points could have be gained by being a bit more surprising or clever with the implementation of Beyond Expectations throughout the game instead of simply as a twist at the end story-wise.

Gameplay
Short enough to not overstay its welcome. However, I did sadly hold attack for the entire time and defeated all enemies including the final boss simply by holding down attack, and more strategy in this arena would have benefitted the game somewhat. Also I was craving some slightly more complex dungeons and/or enemy types and/or moves and/or any requirement to have strategy that I would have liked. But those are implementable, given time and polish. The dungeons were also quite short and didn't have as many decisions in them that interested me as I liked, from my POV. But they looked nice, and I think that matters a lot!

Engagement
Short enough not to overstay its welcome, but the twist, while clever, didn't leave me wanting to explore it much more. The gameplay could be punched up to engage me more in the concept, I feel, which is just a time and polish thing. I think with time and iteration, it can become very effect. But the cute concept of the cities of Texas was quite fun, and the flavour of it all was something I enjoyed quite a bit. :)

Presentation
Cute pixel style! And great music! Some inconsistent pixelling, e.g. in the balloons in the main house, and a bit more could be done to elevate the whole thing in general, e.g. with regards to cathartic conflict resolution, but overall - it's got a lot of potential!

Polish
Some passability issues, but otherwise I didn't really come across many bugs.

Overall

Thank you for making this game. I very much think every game is a gift and the fact you've spent your hard work and effort into making this game shouldn't go unnoticed. Keep making amazing games. Every game's a gift <3

Here's the VOD:

Having been a sokoban game developer myself, I am both enamoured by the genre and also have high standards for it. That said, I love this game quite a bit. I think it's very well made, and it explores some central mechanics very adroitly. I'm very happy you made a puzzle game for this jam, even if puzzle games are not necessarily usually the ones that judges glom onto, because they have a high probability of frustration in judges. But here, I very much adore it, so you've found the good judge in me for this genre in particular.

Theme

There were very many mechanics and systems that exceeded expectations. They oftentimes played with expectations. The duo did a ritual but the result of the ritual was an unexpected result. There are several unexpected elements to this game, both gameplay and story, so I think this adherence to theme is a strength, even if I'm not sure the game absolutely OBVIOUS in the way it tried to attempt the theme, I think the results are inherently beyond expectations.

Gameplay

The puzzle mechanics are quite well-programmed, and there are a lot of them. They are structured in a way where the sokoban puzzle elements react consistently regardless of their place in the world. However, the complexity of the elements would need further polishing in the conveyance department to convey elements of the puzzles to make them more simply understood. e.g. visual elements to indicate objects in the other parallel world, more clarity around where objects are, more clarity about placement of laptop and other things when switching between worlds. Just generally creating QoL elements in the gameplay to make the lives of players easier, because trying to understand everything that's going on is just a little bit too confusing. But it's ambitious and i like that. And I think it requires a lot of talent to do what the developer/s did. Additionally, some controls felt wonky, particularly the pulling box mechanism. I think maybe it's just a bit weird, and if you can't figure it out from the single line they instructed you, the game doesn't make it absolutely clear how to progress. Maybe including a single level simply dedicated to teaching the mechanism that prevents the player from progressing if they don't understand it, and then painting the solution clearly on the wall or something, will get it through the player's heads, because otherwise the player could easily miss an instruction.

Engagement

Story was fairly good. It was a story about emo people (sorry if that's not how the developer would refer to them) and one of them saving the other from a puzzle realm full of strange creatures and objects, only for the saved one to state that they loved the realm the entire time. I think it's a fun little story that highlights the power of friendship and doesn't necessarily make "evil" the elements one might think are evil, which is a neat subversion. It's a light story, I don't think it grips me in a major way but it doesn't have to because the gameplay carries. As a puzzle person myself, particularly a Sokoban nerd, the puzzles were decent, mostly because of the escalating complexity of the elements of the puzzle involved, but puzzles could be simplified in concept sometimes to avoid unnecessary red herrings and inefficiency of the puzzle layouts involved. But this is a minor gripe. It's mostly quite welldone.

Presentation

Decent graphics. Cool tilesets and visual palette. Oftentimes fonts would appear difficult to read over the top of tilesets, mostly due to being thin and the window being small and yeah, just lack of readability. But the visuals and sound were overall pretty cool and add a layer of character to the game.

Polish

Maybe it's something I missed, but after the first couple maps, I couldn't read notes on the ground.

Overall, thank you for making this game! You're awesome. Keep making games. Every game's a gift <3

Here's the VOD:

Theme

The plot was quite surprising, it did buck expectations quite often and there is a plot point where it details the pilgrim's meeting of the all father's expectations or going beyond them. But perhaps I think maybe this theme could have been made more clear, in order to have gained more points.

Gameplay

Despite there clearly being some interesting ideas, I ended up feeling like it was a little overly convoluted, in my mere opinion. A lot of dice rolls and skills I didn't end up understanding, by the end of my hour playing the game, and I think many messages in battle were missing, so I didn't know whether it was hitting or not, or why many of the things were happening. This caused some confusion in me. I then ended up selecting a bunch of moves and had a general idea through trial and error which ones dealt more damage, but not really why. Potions are also due to dice rolls as well. I think in this case, simpler might have been better. A simple gameplay loop. This was a bit ambitious and I don't think it achieved most of its goals gameplay-wise, yet with more polish it could definitely improve in this area.

Engagement

Engagement is very important, and I feel as if the over-difficult first battle gave me a bad impression of the gameplay, sadly. The later battles became easier, thankfully, but it was hard to improve my already stained impression of the game, since the first gave me so much trouble. I think that simplification would do it good to the flow of this game, and even with the stakes of the story, while the pilgrim not meeting the all father's expectations was alluded to, I personally found it hard to get a sense of stakes on why I should care about the people in this convent, or the main character. In general, I found it difficult to relate emotionally to many of the characters, or to get a good impression of them. This was just how I felt, although I think with more adjustments, it could prove a very compelling story indeed.

Presentation

Decently stylised graphical presentation. Fairly a lot of effort put into it. Quite impressive indeed. Although, the sound mix could use some work - some sound effects were loud, and others were too quiet. However it was clear that effort was put into this area.

Polish

Passability glitches in several maps and typos and inconsistent capitalisation to the point where it affected my enjoyment of the story. I feel as if some of it was also due to lack of care, especially capitalisation issues, but I could be wrong.

Here's the VOD:

I thought this game was quirky, funny, hilarious and colourful. I liked the overall presentation. The gameplay. The ideas inherent within it. The only thing that I found holding it back was that it ended halfway through. I wanted to see this until completion. I sincerely think that the only reason I didn't rate it higher was because I didn't get the full catharsis of finishing this story. Although I did rate it quite high indeed.

Theme
Yes! Very beyond expectations. Richard's aim in the story is to deliver beyond what is expected of him. At least one person expects him to fail - the jock security guard. The lizard skin thing is unexpected, the flavour of the minigames and the "dance sequence" is unexpected. The whole thing is quite unexpected. I think this is one of the better thematically aligned entries. Much of the concept is about expectations and trying to go beyond them, or things that happen very unexpectedly.

Gameplay
Very decent. Cool, well-implemented puzzles. They all worked fairly well and they had good intentional conveyed design.

Engagement
Funny story. Lizard people disguising as regular people, Richard who can't get a break finally deciding he wants the girl. And that he should try. I think that's a good central concept. He has to try. Sadly held back by a lack of an ending to push all these things home. Probably the game's biggest flaw. It would be funny if everyone expected him to fail. e.g. people he met while traversing the building would be like "Oh, Richard, it's you" or something like that. Like, everyone hates him. But this story isn't about that, I think. I think it's an upbeat story about Richard finally deciding he's worth winning. He has always been worth it. So it's less a black comedy and more just an uplifting adventure. Going up the ladder until you get to the top.

Presentation
Very well polished. Tongue in cheek, funny with a great original style. Very cute.

Polish
Only minor typos.

Here's the VOD:

This game was quite stylish visually, and audially. A very moody piece about a very specific feeling that you feel. I thought it was quite surreal and interesting. There were a lot of appealing elements to this! And I think the developer/s is/are very talented. There may have been a few things that I was unsure about, or didn't quite understand, but I think there's a lot of promising elements here.

Theme
The fact that a relationship can blossom in the midst of a monsoon could be perceived as being Beyond Expectations. The rain is beyond expectations. But perhaps a more in-built and obvious assumption of the theme could earn more points in this area.

Gameplay
Battles required strategy and solutions to continue, even if the strategies themselves were either fairly trivial, or selecting specific turns to guard even if I didn't understand the pattern apart from trial and error. Exploration was fairly great but then there were random parts like the carriage crossing the road and then you had to wait for the green light that just felt quite arbitrary, and that puzzle frustrated me particularly. The houses puzzle I enjoyed a lot more, and had some clues, even while it relied on you being in specific places, and whenever you interacted with a spirit, it gave a game over without much reason that I could ascertain and I ended up feeling an engagement break when that happened. The Sokoban puzzles had a mechanic that I found difficult to parse, where if you push it against a wall or an object, then move anywhere, it will follow you. This didn't feel that much like a "pull" mechanic as much as a "make this thing follow you" mechanic, and I was a little confused by it, but it ended up making sense after I thought about it. So all in all, well-polished, even if the particular systems bumped up against me here and there.

Engagement
The gorgeous visuals (judged in another category) and general momentum of the story scenes and attention to detail paid to every little thing caused me to just kind of blend into the game and let it take me where it would take me. That's why it felt engaging. It's like being carried by a story where you know the storyteller knows what they're doing. Maybe the story itself could use some punching up, particularly with the ending that felt abrupt, unnecessary and betraying of the previous scenes if that is where it ends because it ends without resolution in my opinion. And not in a way that feels like it completes the themes of the entire thing. BUT I did feel like it was a ride worth taking and even in spite of that, it was still quite a surreal experience, all things considered. I enjoyed it overall, indeed.

Presentation
Very disciplined usage of aspect ratio, monochromatic palette, minimal menus and so on. Sound effects were a tad too loud, but the whole visual and audial palette is quite superb, actually. I think it's the strong point of the game.

Polish
No bugs, as far as I know.

Overall
I thought this was a very strong game with great atmosphere and a surreal tone. Truly unique in feel.

I will also attach a review below this VOD. I will not disclose my ratings for each category as of yet, but those will be revealed in due time. Not all judges are required to post a review or VOD to each game, but many will do so even if it's optional, including myself.

Here's the VOD:

I really quite loved the concept and the presentation of this one, which is why it's a shame to say that the drawbacks are mostly technical, I feel. Despite the mood being set incredibly well, and the overall flow of the game being very interesting and full of interesting ideas, I feel like it would take some work to bring this together into a more coherent gameplay experience. But it has a lot of interesting ideas! So that's why to me it's more of a slightly flawed but very interesting game, that with more polish, would be absolutely winning.

Theme
There are certainly expectations that the company has of you, the employee. Your job is to try to meet expectations. I sadly couldn't detect much "beyond expectations" context for the story, however. I was in particular looking for ways in the gameplay to exceed expectations. But maybe your relationship with the person in the breakroom as you play is something that resides outside of expectations? And that's a version of "beyond"? It's a bit of a stretch imo, but it is there, and I think more points would be awarded if it was maybe a bit more central in theme and pushed it a bit more.

Gameplay
Decent systems here. I like the theme - I'm weak to themes of therapy and mind health and stuff - but I do feel as if the systems could be baked a little more, as mentioned earlier. I liked the concept of them, but in process, as you can probably see in the VOD above, I got some unexpected results and sometimes didn't know what was happening or how to progress through a battle. However, I found many of the ideas present very interesting, and certainly I think the dev has a lot of potential to tell more stories in this vein that are very interesting indeed.

Engagement
Conceptually, it has a nice hook. The story has a hook of getting to know someone outside of the therapy sessions. But the way that it ended was quite abrupt, and I would have liked to see the themes explored to their full potential. Maybe if I got the 5/5 ending I could have been informed about the true ending, etc., but the lack of save/load system means it's a bit of a slog to try to get a 5/5 ending because failure is, in my experience, quite likely for at least 1 of the 5 with my current strategy. If I were able to load from a menu, then I might be able to get the 5/5 ending and figure out what the story was about. But that couldn't happen. I think with further polish in this area, there might be a diamond here.

Presentation
Quite nice-looking and well-polished! Has a good visual identity. Generally very competent. I liked the ideas visually, and the dungeon-explore element, and the custom drawings. Very cool all-round.

Polish
Light bug where you are able to repeat the 5th appointment an infinite number of times if you wanted to. This resets the boss appointment availability too.

Overall
I feel as if this was an entry that had a lot of potential if it were polished more and if the gameplay loop were polished a bit more too. If it were made tighter, and the themes delivered maybe a bit more powerfully (for me, at lesat), I think this would be an absolute banger. For now, I am more excited by the promise of what this developer can do if they set their minds to it.

Here's the VOD:

I thought this was quite a cute adventure with a lot of heart. It was a little RTP adventure that could. It did things very by-the-books, but that was done in quite a solid way. I enjoyed it overall. Thank you for making it <3

Theme
It was hard for me to detect a "beyond expectations" theme, which might have cost points in here. By most means, I detected it as a generally consistent JRPG but was finding it hard to find the theme anywhere, with all sadness. I was looking for twists and turns or anything that would indicate it would be beyond expectations but it was hard to find. Despite the game being rather solid.

Gameplay
The battles had some strategy, but they did begin to get a little repetitive. I was also sad that run speed was set to half T_ T Anyways, by the end, things got better. I'd say after the 45min mark, it started to warm up a bit, but that was after a stretch of some quite repetitive battles, and I felt my 1-hour playthrough ended just as things started to warm up and get better.

Engagement
There was worldbuilding and reasons for things why they were happening, but I do feel it needed a sharper hook to hook me in - to get right down to brass tacks and go right to personal conflicts, I feel. I feel like this is a decent game that would benefit further from having the drama come more to the forefront. Something with higher stakes or relatability. With all love, many stories benefit from getting straight to the point, and I think this game could have been boosted even more than it currently is by pacing the player right to the conflict. It took a little while, which might make some players fade off a little before they get to the interesting stuff!

Presentation
The cliff town was very beautiful! A true highlight. Sometimes the forests blended into each other.  I think this is a decent RTP world, all said, and with more time, and care put into the maps, they could be further embellished to add further interest. In particular, I do feel the sound mix was a bit off... sound effects were way too loud, and I had to turn them down manually. Otherwise, mostly the presentation was quite decent and I enjoyed it overall.

Polish
No bugs as far as I know.

Overall
I think this is a decent standard JRPG with some interesting parts towards the hour mark, but for a jam game, I do feel like it took a while to warm up. Further efforts would resonate with me particularly more if the game were to get quicker to the conflicts. Otherwise, I think everything in terms of base quality was decent.

This entry was very humorous. I enjoyed many of the little encounters Sherman would go on, adventures full of surprise and lots of fun little diversions. I was excited. Even if it did end up being a little repetitive and shallow, it was still extremely funny, especially that hilarious 3d moment. I really loved the character in this one and I enjoyed the overall vibes throughout.

I thought it was a cute adventure with lots of character, and some nice little jokes sprinkled throughout.

Theme
This entry was quite beyond expectations. It played with the idea of judges having expectations for food, and then the shrimp coming along and exceeding their expectations. The game itself went beyond my expectations in terms of providing hilarious comedy that was beyond what I thought it would be. Further points could be gained from being a bit more clever with the theme.

Gameplay
I thought the gameplay was simplistic and serviceable. The gameplay serves the narrative. It is not meant to be difficult. It is just supposed to be simple and difficult to lose. But it would be nice if it had more strategy required, a more thoroughly refined gameplay loop, and polish around the edges of the system. Maybe adding items and/or equipment to add layers of strategy. Exploration was also rather linear and some parts made the random encounters feel a bit annoying and unnecessary. But it was largely okay because you could just run away easily. More points could be earned here by simply developing this simple system into a more complex and ambitious one.

Engagement
Probably one of the funniest entries I've played. Actually, yeah, probably top 5 funniest. The humour was very funny. That said, it was a joke game and I think by the end I was okay with it ending there. If the developer decided to make something with a bit more story substance, they could make something that would draw me in for longer or affect me on a deeper level. Not all games have to do this, but it is a contest and that would be impressive.

Presentation
Very cute characters with lovely portraits. 1 whole extra point or maybe even 2 for that 3d sequence alone. That was a fantastic way to visually deliver a joke. Even the final shrimp image was a really fun way to do that. So yeah, the portraits are lovely. Maps could use some work, and the general audiovisual standard could be lifted a little for future projects. But for the little joke it was, it worked quite a charm and it is a charming game. I love the shrimp portrait guy.

Polish
No bugs as far as I know.

Conclusion
Overall I thought it was quite swell! Thank you for making this very cute little game and I enjoyed it a lot <3

Yo! Well done with this game. It has some really nice sidescrolling graphics, sketches, and an overall very interesting and intriguing premise. I loved the idea of being both victim and perpetrator. It certainly does have an unnerving atmosphere. Keep making awesome stuff :)

Thank you!! :D

Thank you for playing! I watched some of this (because I suck at watching let's plays of videos because I cringe at my contributions, lol) but I'm thankful that you put aside the time and thought the storytelling was great! You're a gem :D
